It’s the news we all dreaded but never thought we’d see. The impending divorce of Hollywood’s golden couple, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. It’s hard not to compare the breakdown of their marriage to the last film they shot together – By the Sea – about a couple in meltdown. In a similar, bizarre way, we could compare the piece to the semi-factual ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’ (1966), starring estranged and then reconciled (and then once more divorced!) real life Hollywood couple Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Is Hollywood history repeating itself?
In both films we see the agonising breakdown of a couple, right in front of our eyes. The performances may have been cathartic for Taylor and Burton as they went through their own struggles in the public eye, could we say the same for the Jolie/Pitt saga? We can draw many comparisons with Brad and Angelina to Burton and Taylor – the iconic Hollywood couple of their era, they were the first couple to really mix their private and personal lives. Living in the public eye so salaciously, the publication of a very candid photo confirmed a rumoured affair that would see Burton leave his wife for the glamorous Elizabeth Taylor. Divorced and then married once more, the Taylor-Burton story has its twists and turns. Optimistic fans may hope for a similar (but permanent) reconciliation for the Jolie-Pitt story, and who knows, a resolution may still appear a little way down the road. A happy, Hollywood ending for a couple so committed to making the world a better place through their philanthropy and work for good causes.
And maybe this is what we should focus on as their private lives are hauled across the coals. The Jolie-Pitt Foundation will surely continue its excellent work, dedicated to creating stability and supporting communities, eradicating rural poverty and protecting natural resources. And this, along with their beautiful children, seems to be the pearl created by the oyster of their marriage. The lives they have been able to change for the better will undoubtedly be intensely grateful of their combined hard work and commitment.
