London Marriott County Hall is celebrating the nation’s mood for romance, love and marriage, by revealing the winning poems from their recent Marriott Love Poems search.
The best poems have been handpicked by the search’s judges; editor of Poetry Review magazine, Fiona Sampson, and poet Matt Harvey, from the hundreds of poems submitted from all corners of the UK. The winning poems will be published in ‘Marriott Love Poems – A Collection Inspired by Love, Weddings and Romance’, a poetry book reflecting modern marriage and weddings.
From blushing brides in organisation mode, to frantic fathers-of-the-bride preparing to walk their little girls down the aisle, the search invited everyone inspired by love and weddings to put pen to paper, resulting in a final collection featuring touching, romantic, funny and serious poems, all evoking the myriad emotions around weddings in a unique way.
Overwhelmed by the quality of poems received, Fiona Sampson commented, “The Poems we’ve read have been very well written examples of vernacular in verse. These are poems on a big theme by real, ordinary people. They are not literary works, but part of our nation’s vibrant community culture.”
Highlights from the winning poems include an ode to The Simpsons’ Homer in ‘Be My Homer’ by Kent resident CJ Munn;
“Be My Homer,
I want to be your Marge
If I’m your Norfolk Broads
Will you be my Barge?”
A heartfelt letter to the heart in ‘Dear Heart’;
I’d like it if you’d tell me
How you measure love.
Do you deal in ounces and quarters?
Or stroke it with kid gloves?
And a tearful tale of losing a son to his bride in ‘My Son’s Bride’
“I’m losing my boy
And I know that I oughta
Be jumping with joy
That I’m gaining a daughter
Full of poetic inspiration for wedding celebrations for many years to come, ‘Marriott Love Poems’ will be published on 18th April and distributed across the 54 Marriott Hotel & Country Clubs in the UK.
