Review: Cugó Gran Menorca is a full-service, privately owned luxury villa. It sleeps up to 24 guests in 12 ensuite rooms and provides all the luxury facilities and services that you would expect from a luxury boutique hotel. Have we said luxury enough?! Because however much we say it, it’s not enough, this place is just incredible.
We were invited to stay at Cugó Gran Menorca for two nights, to see what they could offer to a couple wanting that something special for their wedding celebration. Situated in 250 acres of a private estate, just 15 minutes outside of the town of Mahón, Cugó Gran Menorca has been renovated to the highest standards, having been certified as the only 5 Star Agroturismo in Menorca. It would be the perfect spot for a bespoke wedding, retreat, minimoon or honeymoon.
Our arrival at Cugó Gran Menorca
We travelled from the airport through beautiful countryside and up a long driveway with vineyards either side – cue some excitement about the wine – and were met by General Manager Samuel Santos and Nicole and Noemi who, along with the rest of the 20-strong team, became like family to us over the next couple of days.
Floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to lush greenery, the vineyards and infinity pool – a welcome sight – and we enjoyed a cocktail alongside the beautiful views. The little mats that our drinks sat on were impregnated with wildflower seeds, so once used, they could be repurposed and enjoyed again as fragrant flowers. Just the first of many touches that made this trip such a joy.
Weddings at Cugó Gran Menorca
We were shown to our rooms and then given a tour to see how the incredible £10m renovation had restored original tiles, original beams and added traditional and beautiful features like the stunning wooden floor. General Manager Samuel then explained the process he goes through when planning a wedding with a couple. He obviously knows the estate the best, and will guide brides and grooms to the best decisions for their day. For example, he knows when and where the sun sets, to recommend a time of day for the ceremony and celebrations, and where they should be held on the estate to make the most of the surroundings. It’s such a clever way to plan a wedding; to use the beauty of the surroundings and match it up with the ideas of the couple. Samuel is the expert – and his attention to detail is just delightful.
From the two helipads, which would create quite the entrance, to the Bedouin tent next to the pool where a DJ could reside for a cocktail reception and the barbeque area where you could imagine a big family paella being cooked up, you can see just how a wedding day would pan out. There’s even a little villa for any children in the party to escape to, with qualified nannies to entertain them. They really have thought about the whole family at Cugó Gran Menorca. There’s also a church nearby, so if you wanted to hold the ceremony there, it’s conveniently located.
Cugó Gran Menorca can cater for weddings with up to 50 guests, however, larger parties can be catered for by requesting external catering and there are hotels close by. There are 12 double ensuite rooms that can accommodate 24 guests, seven rooms in the main house, and five in the adjoining guesthouse. They can also provide cots.
Staying at Cugó Gran Menorca
My room was so spacious, with a walk-in shower in the bathroom and White Company products. Fresh roses were placed in the bathroom and the whole place has an organic, rustic feel of the highest quality. It was so relaxing being in there. but with the entire estate to ourselves, there was plenty to explore.
Endless views of lavender one way, and vineyards the other made for an incredibly romantic view, and one that would be perfect for a bride to get ready, gazing upon. The villa also has breath-taking 180-degree sea views, with Mallorca on the horizon. You really feel like Cugó Gran Menorca is a home away from home, with such great attention to detail. The fresh lavender we saw outside was placed on the tables and tucked into napkins at our meals, which were absolutely incredible.
Eating at Cugó Gran Menorca
I just couldn’t fault the food, it was some of the best I have ever tasted. From the warm onion bread to the fresh paella, we knew we were in for a treat from our first bite, but then came the caramelised brioche, which I could never do justice to, simply describing it. Crisp and sugary, it was soft and warm inside, like eating a hug! And the honey ice cream wass divine. We enjoyed a selection of the most delicious croquettes with ham and honey, Spanish salami, aubergine and cheese all nestled inside, melting away. I think we tried every dessert on the menu! And from the fragrant, heavenly cheesecake to those decadent brioches, every dish was sublime.
We were so well looked after, nothing was too much trouble, and the menu recommendations were faultless. Everything is freshly made, with produce taken from the gardens. We spent two hours over breakfast one morning, we were just enjoying it so much – the fresh omelette, eggs benedict, crepes, yoghurt, fruit and fresh bread with homemade jams. The orange juice was squeezed before our eyes, and by the second day, head chef Roberto (who I wondered if I could sneak home with me!) asked if we wanted ‘our usual’! The food is unique, delicious and something very special.
Facilities at Cugó Gran Menorca
From the heated outdoor pool lit up at night to the gym and massage treatment room, Cugó Gran Menorca has really thought about incorporating all the extra details that make a wedding or honeymoon so special. I had a wonderful massage, which would just be the perfect treatment to relax before your wedding. And at night, under a clear sky sparkling with countless stars, you could just float in the pool and then wrap up warm under a blanket and enjoy a cosy evening with a glass of estate wine in your hand. There are lantern candles everywhere that are lit in the evening along with incense, wafting White Company Noir fragrance around the place, it’s simply heavenly. You can visit Cugó Gran Menorca for a wellness retreat, and I think it would be the perfect place for social detox – just to switch off and enjoy the facilities and food.
The local area
The local town of Mahón is just a 15-minute drive away, and so we took a little trip to enjoy the narrow streets, churches and port. The white and blue houses were so striking. We also explored the local beach, Binidalí, which is an eight-minute drive away. It was quiet and just beautiful, a lovely little trip.
We couldn’t have had a better time at Cugó Gran Menorca. The welcome was exceptional, the food was exquisite and the whole estate is just like a dream. The staff are more like family, making the effort and taking the time to get to know you, and each one cares deeply for the estate. You’ll even see General Manager Samuel plumping cushions about the place. I don’t think any review could do this place justice, it was something very special.
