With the recent popularity of Downtown Abbey and the eagerly awaited Great Gatsby hitting the big screen later this year, glamorous weddings that draw inspiration from the by-gone era of the 1920’s is definitely one of the most popular themes for current brides-to-be. Oozing romance and glamour many elements of the Art Deco period can be drawn upon for your big day, here we offer our top tips for achieving the perfect 1920’s bridal look. We have managed to speak with Hawke & Hughes to get all the details of this gorgeous wedding trend we are hearing all about.

First things first, the dress. No-one does 1920’s style glamour for brides better than Jenny Packham. Think dropped waistlines, flattened busts, slinky, floaty silhouettes, flapper dresses and lace – these are all styles synonymous with the decade.

So you have picked the dress, now you need the hair to compliment the look. Short hair was ‘in’ back in the 1920’s after the long haired style of the Victorian ages. Finger waves, Marcel wave, shingle and bobs were all the styles of the decade.

What else do you think of when you say 1920’s wedding? We think head-dress! Cap styled veils a la Kate Moss and Lily Allen, bird-cage veils, flapper style headpiece, hair jewellery, feather fascinators, the list is endless.

The Art Deco movement saw styles focused on geometric and bold designs which influenced the decade’s jewellery. Pearl necklaces were also popular during this time. Remember, if you’re having a wow headpiece it’s better to go for simple understated jewellery. Just a ring or bracelet perhaps, too much and your guests won’t know where to look first!

If you’re a girl after our own hearts you will know what’s coming next, the final piece of your 1920’s attire. Shoes! With so many to choose from, you could decide to stay traditional and go with white bridal shoes or you could go for something different so guests get a peek of colour or sparkle under your gown. Mary Jane’s are very 1920’s-esque – here are some of our favourites.

If Mary-Jane’s aren’t your style or look too heavy for your delicate dress then these sparkly styles by Jimmy Choo could be more suited to your look

Now, I hear you ask – if we were to plan a 1920’s wedding what would it look like? Here’s Hawke & Hughes mood board for 1920’s Romance……simple, classic and full of glamour!!
