The African bush might not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of romantic world hotspots, however deep in the wilderness of southern Tanzania, the bountiful wildlife seems to disagree! From the diminutive dik dik, which stays with the same partner for life to the male zebra, who will lose his whole herd for his favourite mate, many of Africa’s creatures show plenty of flamboyant, flirty behaviour during the mating season – which generally begins in December.

Wilderness of Southern Tanzania

Chivalry is evident throughout the Selous Game Reserve, with the camp of Siwandu offering an idyllic environment for a wealth of Africa’s loved-up creatures. Situated within an open palm forest on the shores of Lake Nzerakera, it supports a myriad of bird life and the largest crocodile and hippo population in Africa.

Wilderness of Southern Tanzania

Located in the vast Ruaha National Park, Siwandu’s sister camp Jongomero, is also one of Africa’s great birding paradises, with over 530 species of bird recorded to date, due to its remote location and the diversity of trees. The best time to see birds on safari is in January and February, when the terrain is lush and green and the trees are filled with the mating calls of birds in plume.

Couples can observe these blossoming relationships from their private verandah, or while on a walking safari or game drive. What’s more, as both Siwandu and Jongomero are unfenced, guests can sometimes encounter wildlife up close and personal – from a giant elephant to the cutest creature in the bush, the dik dik – whose big, Bambi eyes are enough to melt even the hardest of hearts – no wonder it’s so lucky in love!

For ‘lovebirds’ wanting to experience the wild romance of Africa, Rainbow Tours rainbowtours.co.uk is offering a 10-night trip to Tanzania from £3,870 per person. Valid for selected departures from December 2012 until March 2013, the price includes three nights on safari at Jongomero, three nights at Siwandu, plus a further four nights at Ras Kutani on a full-board basis.

Also included are flights from Heathrow with British Airways, internal transfers, game viewing drives in open sided 4×4 vehicles, walking safaris and boat safaris at Siwandu, as well as concession and park entrance fees, taxes and surcharges.

I thought I would share these tips from The Selous Safari Company on the safari calendar of southern Tanzania. Travel in March for blossoming wildflowers, September for awesome game viewing or December for an unforgettable Christmas in the bush.

From the dry season to monsoon season, southern Tanzania offers an ever-changing landscape of flora and fauna. Each seasonal transformation is marked with new colours, topography and wildlife, offering guests a minefield of choices. Whether visitors are fanatical birders, keen botanists or simply want to catch sight of one of Africa’s famous and majestic beasts during their trip, there is a special time of year for every sort of safari goer.

Here is a run-through of the key months in nature’s annual calendar:

January – March

It is hot, humid and approaching the rainy season at this time in the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania, but this is Africa and rain equals the flirtatious chatter of birds, wildlife showcasing spectacular breeding behaviour, lush scenery, flowing rivers, colourful butterflies and blossoming wildflowers. The Selous Safari Camp is prime wildlife watching territory and a great place for catching sight of the elusive leopard.

Game Viewing

June – September

After an annual break, southern Tanzania’s safari camps reopen for the start of a new safari season. June is a great month to visit the Selous Safari Camp, or Jongomero Camp in the remote Ruaha National Park. This new season brings with it a dry, dramatic landscape and dry sandy riverbeds – which form some of Ruaha’s most appealing natural features and are the focus of excellent wildlife viewing as the animals search for water.

UK Summertime is peak season for game viewing in southern Tanzania, as the barren, sun-dried landscape causes a veritable feast of animals to congregate around the sparse watering holes and shrinking rivers. The lack of vegetation makes it easier to spot game, and lion are abundant at this time as are large herds of antelope, zebra and buffalo, which group together in numbers, searching for water and safety. While this is the most popular time to visit, The Selous Safari Company actually offers huge savings with low season rates in 2013 if booked early.

Head to the southern Tanzanian coast in early June, to catch turtles hatching at the beach retreat of Ras Kutani. Located against a stunning backdrop of flora and fauna, this luxurious beach retreat is the ideal place to relax after a safari. Ras Kutani’s long, white sand beach offers complete seclusion, while the temperate seas ensure a wealth of marine life. What’s more, humpback whales can be spotted around the shores off Ras Kutani from July until September, as they parade up the east African coast.

Ras Kutani Lagoon & Forest

November – December

This is ‘secret season’, so called because it’s one of cheapest months to go on safari. The Selous Safari Company lowers its prices on 1 November but the game viewing can still be phenomenal at this time of year, especially in the Ruaha National Park, as the rains don’t usually set in until later. Herds of thirsty animals, from lion to kudu, cluster around the water holes waiting for the start of the rains. For those wanting to spend Christmas in the bush, southern Tanzania enjoys some dry weather and excellent game viewing during December. Guests wake up on Christmas morning to the prospect of an exciting 4X4 safari at Jongomero Camp or spotting game around the Selous Safari Camp’s private lake where they can even get up close and personal with Tanzania’s most powerful beasts with a memorable boat safari on the crocodile and hippo infested waters.

Jongo

Situated within an open palm forest on the shores of Lake Nzerakera, southern Tanzania, the Selous Safari Camp’s 13 tented suites are dotted around the perimeter in absolute seclusion, each with their own private verandah, offering a unique view over the water. Each one is constructed from natural wood and natural canvas, complimenting their natural setting. Furnished in traditional style, the suites offer ornate furniture, a grand, eight-foot wide bed and beautiful bathroom features, including an oversized brass sink and a star shower complete with locally-produced toiletries – providing an exhilarating ‘wild washing’ experience!

Luxury Tanzanian Tents

While the suites hark back to the classic, ‘old safari’ style, they retain a twist of real Africa from the traditional Tanzanian throws, rugs and fabrics, and the little details – woven baskets and ornamental pieces made of innovative materials such as scrap metal, by local craftsmen and nearby charitable organisations, including a metal sculpture project called the Wonder Workshop which employs adult polio victims, and Womencraft.org – an organisation which creates woven baskets. As well as adorning the suites, a selection of pieces can be bought at the camp shop, with the funds going straight back to fund the projects.

Luxury Tent In Tanzania

For those seeking the ultimate African wilderness, the Selous Safari Camp’s sister property Jongomero Camp, is situated on the banks of a seasonal sand river in the heart of the Ruaha National Park. Tucked away in shady woodland, the camp’s eight tented suites are on raised wooden platforms under traditional thatched roofs, which encompass a spacious private verandah from which elephant and other amazing wildlife can be spotted. These beautiful suites are constructed using dhow boat wood, taken from wrecks on the Tanzanian coast.
