How the other half live: Lavish weddings of Nigeria’s billionaires

Ruth Langsford discovers the luxury of Nigerian weddings in Channel 5 documentary

£100,000 Vera Wang dresses, £6000 wedding favours, brides arriving at the ceremony by plane… This is the new league of luxury weddings taking place in London these days, as we saw last night on How The Other Half Lives. We watched in amazement Ruth Langsford explored the growing wedding industry of Nigeria’s billionaires, for whom London is one of many playgrounds.

During the programme, Ruth got the chance to meet Elizabeth Aisien, of Privé Luxury Events, whose clients include celebrity and royalty from Nigeria. The wedding industry has boomed in Nigeria over the last decade, possibly due to a number of wealthy young Nigerians coming to the west for their education. Celebrity influences – such as the surge in popularity for ‘flower walls’ following Kim and Kanye’s incredible floral altar at their 2014 wedding – and the glamour of the western events industry has shaped a new era of amazingly glamorous African weddings. It is not unusual for couples to have several ceremonies – heritage has not been lost, and most couples begin with a traditional Nigerian wedding, followed by more western style, destination weddings in places such as London, Italy, or even Dubai.
