The Kayon Valley Resort Ubud
Indonesia
A forest resort of 22 private pool villas above the Petanu River, with a chapel on a floating deck
No. 7 · Autumn 2026

A resort named for the tree of life
A resort of 22 private pool villas in the village of Petulu, ten minutes from Ubud, that holds weddings in the Puspaka chapel above the Petanu River valley.
The Kayon Valley Resort sits in the village of Petulu, above the Petanu River and framed by tropical forest and rice terraces. Its name is said to mean 'tree of life creations', and the design draws on the Ramayana epic, with a Ramayana relief on a stone wall and a statue of Kumbhakarna at the heart of the resort. Ubud centre is a ten-minute drive away.

The Puspaka chapel
The Puspaka chapel is a floating deck set among rice fields, forest and the sound of the river. It takes its name from the royal carriage in the Ramayana and is built around an antique Balinese carriage dressed with local flowers. Ceremonies are led by an English-speaking celebrant and the certificate is commemorative rather than legal.
