A few months ago, I had the extraordinary privilege of hosting a tea party at The Dorchester in honour of a woman who literally transformed Nigerian media forever, the incomparable Aunty Betty Irabor.

As a luxury consultant, author of The Luxpreneur, and founder of the Diversity in Luxury Awards, I’ve had the honour of celebrating many exceptional individuals. But this afternoon was something truly special.
The Setting
The Dorchester’s stunning Crystal Room provided the perfect backdrop for this momentous occasion. From the moment guests arrived, every detail spoke to the elegance and significance of the celebration. The exquisite pink florals by sustainability queen Fleur de la Couture transformed the space into a garden of sophistication. At the same time, the bespoke stationery by @mel_imprints set the tone from the very first invitation.

The luxurious linens by Chateau Noir draped the tables in blush perfection, complemented by statement chairs from London Event that added architectural beauty to the room. Photography by Ola and Tom captured every precious moment, while DJ Blox provided the perfect soundtrack to an unforgettable afternoon. Once Upon a Destination orchestrated the event’s seamless flow with impeccable precision.
An Afternoon Tea Fit for Royalty
The Dorchester created a specially designed afternoon tea menu that was nothing short of spectacular:
Sandwiches:
- Severn & Wye smoked salmon with horseradish, fennel and pickled shallots on rye bread
- Cucumber and lemon verbena cream on white bread
- Roast chicken with French sorrel and lemon mayonnaise on malt bread
- Clarence Court egg mayonnaise and Meon Valley watercress on white bread
- Dorrington ham with nasturtium and mustard mayonnaise on onion bread
- Smoked salmon & caviar scone
Pastries:
- Warm scones with clotted cream and a variety of jams
- Tropical Savarin with Coconut Chantilly
- Chocolate mousse cake with Itakuja mousse and passion compote
- Betty’s Special Summer berry mousse with vanilla sablé and summer berry compote
- Citrus tart with lemon whipped jelly and yuzu curd
And the pièce de résistance: the chef’s special presentation of caviar adorned with gold leaf—a fitting tribute to a golden legacy.

The Gathering
Dignitaries, media pioneers, business leaders, and cultural icons gathered in one of London’s most prestigious settings. Among the distinguished guests were Lord and Lady Boateng, whose presence added even more gravitas to an already momentous occasion.

This wasn’t just another elegant gathering; it was the perfect balance of sophistication and warmth. The Dorchester delivered flawless service worthy of the occasion, while genuine laughter filled the Crystal Room as stories were shared. Every detail reflected the respect Aunty Betty commands, creating an atmosphere where wisdom flowed from a woman who built media empires, resulting in pure celebration of a life that’s touched thousands.
The True Beauty
Watching dignitaries and industry titans hang on every word from a woman who didn’t just break glass ceilings, she redesigned the entire architecture of what was possible for African women in media was the real beauty of the afternoon.

Aunty Betty’s grace, wisdom, and infectious spirit reminded everyone why some people don’t just succeed, they inspire generations. Her journey from founding Genevieve Magazine to becoming a beacon of excellence in African media has paved the way for countless women to dream bigger and reach higher.

When you honour true legends properly, magic happens, and the conversations continue long after the tea is finished.
