Castel Monastero
Tuscany, Italy
Medieval fortified village among the Chianti hills, near Siena
No. 599 · Autumn 2026

A fortified village with a long history
Castel Monastero is a walled medieval village in the Chianti hills near Siena, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, a spa and a piazza for ceremonies and dinners.
The castle is first recorded under the name Sarna in 1044. It later belonged to a branch of the Berardenghi family and to the Commune of Siena, and was bought by the noble Sienese Chigi Saracini family as a country house. The village has been restored as a resort within its original walls.

Ceremonies within the walls
A small church dedicated to Saint Jacob and Saint Christopher has stood in the village since the 11th century. Blessings and symbolic ceremonies can also take place on the piazza, in the spa garden or by the pool, with the hills as a backdrop.
