About Castel Monastero

Castel Monastero is a walled medieval village in the Chianti hills near Siena, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, a spa and a piazza for ceremonies and dinners.

Castel Monastero is a medieval fortified village in the Chianti hills, a short drive from Siena. The castle is first recorded in 1044 and later became the country house of the Chigi Saracini family. The hamlet has been restored as a resort within its original walls, and a small church dedicated to Saint Jacob and Saint Christopher has stood here since the 11th century.

Weddings use the village itself. Ceremonies and blessings can be arranged on the medieval piazza, in the spa garden, by the pool or in the Cantina garden, while civil ceremonies take place at the town hall of Castelnuovo Berardenga, 7 km away. Receptions move between the piazza, the Cantina restaurant in the old wine cellar and the Ombrone Room, with the Michelin-starred Contrada restaurant and Spa Monasterii on site. Rooms, suites and the three-bedroom Villa Lavanda sit around the piazza and across the hamlet, and an in-house event manager works alongside the couple's own planner.

A fortified village with a long history

The castle is first recorded under the name Sarna in 1044. It later belonged to a branch of the Berardenghi family and to the Commune of Siena, and was bought by the noble Sienese Chigi Saracini family as a country house. The village has been restored as a resort within its original walls.
