1. One shape may not fit all.
Whether your wedding party is three people or 15 people, remember that everyone has a different body type and style preference. It’s impossible to cater to absolutely everyone’s preferences while bridesmaid dress shopping, but it’s important to be mindful of this.
Gone are the days where all bridesmaids need to match in style as well as colour. These days most Bride Tribes come in all shapes, colours, and sizes, it has become not only trendy but also clever to pick a style that suits her body shape even if this results in all your maids in different styles. Though you’ve probably scoured the internet and found the dress style of your dreams, it may not look as good in reality. Everybody is different, and mermaid or sheath dresses might not flatter your friends’ shapes. Ask them to try on a few different styles so you get a feel for what works and what doesn’t. And, remember, they can all wear different silhouettes if you want them to!
What’s great Is that most brands will now offer multiple styles within a fabrication, meaning that although each maid will be in a different dress the colours will all be aligned.
2. Have your colour scheme locked down
Its important to have a colour in mind before heading into your appointment. As many brands offer 20-30 colours per style, not knowing which direction to go will make things very confusing and somewhat overwhelming.
Consider a hue that’ll fit your wedding colors and overall aesthetic, suit the season, and flatter your friends’ skin tones. You could also choose a general color scheme and let your bridesmaids find a dress they love within those parameters.
3. Make sure you have your dress before shopping for your maids
Think about your own wedding dress. Is it classic, boho, vintage, or modern? No need to be matchy-matchy, but you’ll be posing for photos together and standing near each other at the ceremony, so the bridesmaid dresses should fit the vibe
However, if you don’t already have a clear idea of what you’re looking for, it might not be best to bring all six bridesmaids to the try-on appointment. It might be best to just bring your maid of honor or a couple of your girls. Once you have a good idea of what you want, you can bring all the other girls to try on your favorite style(s) and get measured!
4. Have a budget in mind
If you’re lucky enough to have more than 5 Bridesmaids, make sure you have accounted for the expense. Dresses start from as little as £150 but some can go in excess of £300 so if you have more than 4-5 make sure you know your limitations. There is nothing worse than falling in love with a dress you can’t have.
You obviously care about your bride, but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank and spend more than you are comfortable with.
Make sure your budget includes all those extra costs that will sneak up on you such as alterations, shoes, travel, gifts, etc.
5. Encourage your bridesmaids to be vocal but take the lead in the fitting.
No Bride wants to put her bestie in a dress that she hates but equally all Bridesmaids will want to make the bride happy. Encourage your Bridesmaid to speak up. No bridal party wants to be micromanaged, but they also don’t want to be left high and dry. Even if you’re a super hands-off bride, offer your input
