Review: A sublime stay at the Sofitel London St James

The Sofitel London St James is an impressive building. Surrounded by 150 listed buildings, this magnificent neoclassical façade fits in perfectly. And it was here that we were to spend a fabulous night finding out more about what the five-star Sofitel London St James has to offer.

The building that houses the hotel used to be a bank, and as soon as you enter you can see little reminders of its former life. Beneath the lobby’s high ceilings sits old banking machines and cabinets full of old coins and notes – a lovely touch that compliments the French designed interior.

Welcome

We were greeted immediately, warmly welcomed with refreshments and our young daughter was presented with a box of delicious treats. Sweets and, fittingly, chocolate gold coins, which was eagerly accepted! We were then whisked to our beautiful room – a really good size, with modern fittings and cute timepiece printed wallpaper in the entrance. It had fabulous amenities – a lovely desk, minibar and tea and coffee, the bathroom was gorgeous, with sparkling black tiles on the walls and a fresh black and white tiled floor. It featured a walk in shower and amazing Hermes bath products, which I love!

Amazing beds!

Now I must mention the beds here. Sofitel has their own brand of bed. MyBed™ is a simply sublime creation – a combination of the perfect base, mattress, featherbed and duvet make for a bed to die for. And you can take home this luxury, which I would, but I fear I may never leave it…

A gorgeous spa

On to the spa, with marble walled halls. It used to be part of the bank as well, and its friezes and marble details are simply beautiful. Here there is a lovely little room with a fire and a harpist. It’s cute pink and red detailing make it perfect for a girls’ afternoon tea – the ideal hen party spot.

Pretty Rose Lounge

As would the Rose Lounge be, modelled on Coco Chanel’s apartment, its pink décor evokes the feeling of being surrounded by roses in a beautiful garden. Parisienne pastries and pink champagne in here would be a wonderful treat.

Dinner – The Balcon

We dined in the absolutely fabulous The Balcon restaurant. Our table, facing the road, looked out on to the hustle and bustle of London, while we enjoyed our delicious three-course meal. We were treated so well, with pink Moet on arrival and a gorgeous menu with so much variety. I had seared Scottish scallops with tortellini to start, which was divine, followed by a wonderful main course with seafood – clams, mussels and fresh pasta, and then a Passion Fruit Crème Brulee with amazing mango sorbet. Wine with each course, a tour of the cocktail bar and faultless service made the evening a true delight.

Breakfast choices

After an amazing night’s sleep on my new favourite bed, we enjoyed a fabulous breakfast. There was so much choice – so many different buffet stations with pastries, juices, traditional hot English breakfast and continental options, detox drinks, a selection of healthy options, it was a fantastic start to the day. So we took full advantage of the choices before checking out!

We adored our stay at the Sofitel London St James and would thoroughly recommend it. This would be the perfect place for an indulgent weekend pf pampering – a treat for the girls or a couples pampering session, nothing is too much trouble for the staff, and some of the suites even come with your own butler!

Wedding options

It would also be a wonderful wedding venue. Their rooms are spacious, elegant and impressive and they offer a number of wedding packages that are tailored to you and your requirements.

Their gorgeous Westminster Suite accommodates up to 200 guests, with pretty chandeliers and a really versatile space. The impressive Mayfair Suite also boasts beautiful chandeliers, nd can accommodate 132 guests. Or choose the smaller Piccadilly and Bloomsbury Suite, a sweet space for up to 70 guests. Lastly, the Kensington Suite has gorgeous natural light and would be lovely for a small gathering of up to 20 guests. The façade of this hotel alone is enough to make you fall in love with it, and a wedding here would be simply wonderful.
