Wedding cake trends for 2019

Wedding cakes have evolved considerably over the years. Gone are the days of original fruit cakes and white icing. Nowadays, couples are not only choosing wedding cakes that come in a variety of deliciously indulgent flavours but many are choosing cakes that are complete works of art, from delicately piped colourful flowers, to different botanicals and multiple extraordinary layers.

This year saw several incredible new techniques and twists dominate the wedding cake sector, such as the popular geometrics and woodland inspired designs. And 2019 is likely to be no different with several unusual wedding cake trends set to rise in popularity. Here’s what to keep an eye out for in the New Year.

  1. Bespoke

What’s clear is that couples are becoming much more adventurous when it comes to planning their wedding – and that includes the design of their wedding cake. When couples realise the creative potential to be different with their cake designs and flavours in order to captivate their guests, many will find themselves selecting something that’s beautifully bespoke and unique to them and their special day.

  1. Monograms & Motifs

2019 will see a rise in the number of couples requesting monograms to be piped onto their cakes. Monograms add an air of grandeur to the design while also adding a delicate and subtle personal touch. Bespoke hand painted motifs will continue to be popular among happy couples choosing their cake designs in 2019.

  1. Metallics

Metallics have been increasing in popularity over the course of 2018 and I think that this popularity will continue into the New Year. However, instead of the popular rose gold and gold that have dominated this year, 2019 will see them step aside to make way for silver and more muted metallics.

  1. Textures

Perfectly smooth iced tiers have been the finish of choice over the decades but more recently, couples have been open to including different textures into their cake design. In 2019, we can expect to see a rise in the number of couples choosing to create a delicious cake with a textured surface rather than opting for the more familiar smooth layers.

  1. It is all in the detail!

With texture coming to the fore as a big trend for 2019, this will encourage couples to become more focused on the finer details of their cake design. For those who want a textured cake, there are endless possibilities as to what they can have as part of the design. Delicately piped royal icing is something in particular that I think will excite couples when it comes to considering the details. Furthermore, the ability and skill of cake designers to layer up these details means that these cakes can truly become a masterpiece that sets them apart from the rest.
