Gifts to take to a dinner or a weekend away: candles from Trudon and Aerin, glassware from Cabana, Lalique and Baccarat, Creed fragrance, and small leather and silver pieces.

Six coats from Max Mara, The Row and Loro Piana, chosen because they are made to last well beyond one season.

A good coat is the one piece of winter clothing you see every day, over everything else you own. That is why it is worth spending on. These six are the coats our editors would buy with their own money: each is made in Italy, each uses a noble fibre such as cashmere, camel hair or felted wool, and each has a shape that will not date by next year.
If you only buy one coat this decade, start with Max Mara. The 101801 has been in the collection since the 1980s, and its wool and cashmere blend is felted over 73 steps for a soft, slightly lustrous finish.
It is double-breasted, belted and cut with draped sleeves, so it sits well over tailoring and knitwear alike.
Launched in 2013 and reissued again and again since, the Teddy Bear is camel hair woven with silk into a plush pile. It is oversized by design, so size for the layers you will wear under it rather than going down.
For something quieter from the same house, the Manuela is a camel-hair wrap coat, lined in satin and tied at the waist.
Loro Piana is where you go for cashmere at its best. The Roaden is two layers of it, joined with hand-stitched edges you cannot see, left unlined so it is lighter than it looks.
The Jimi is reversible, charcoal on one side and brown on the other, trimmed with chocolate leather.

Start with how you dress most days. If your week is tailoring, the 101801 or the Malika will sit cleanly over a suit. If it is knitwear and jeans, the Teddy Bear or the Roaden give you volume and warmth. Camel and black both work with everything; midnight blue and charcoal are the quieter alternatives.
Prices and stock are checked against each store every day, so what you see here is what you will find at checkout.
