We’re seeing a swing back towards classic silhouettes and elegant lines in bridal gowns, but in her Spring 2019 collection, Vera Wang has ignored the rules and is playing her own gorgeous game.
With tumbling trains and beautiful bustles, the collection bursts onto the scene in vivid colour. Tones are layered in frothy waterfall skirts and punched onto waistlines in bright bows. Explaining her inspiration, Wang says, “I wanted to explore translucency and movement, and obviously colour, but in a new way, in order to ignore certain ‘bridal’ dictums, like white, beading, acres of lace, and traditional ball skirts.”
She took inspiration from Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, most famed for his painting ‘Girl with a Pearl earring’. He played with light across his canvas and used expensive vivid and contrasting pigments.
I’ve fallen in love with this happy collection of joyful dresses. If you’re looking for a coloured gown, look no further. I’ve chosen my favourite five, you can see the full collection here.
A lavender overlay, tucked at the waist, reveals a nude, strapless A line gown in crinkled tulle. The forest green silk belt is the perfect pop of contrasting colour.
In a dramatic tumble of plum tulle, the layers of this skirt shine through in tones of fuchsia and nude. A hand draped tulle bodice adds pretty detail and the lilac flower is just so fun!
Ravishing in red, this plunging neckline is mirrored in the draped skirt, revealing layers of nude tulle. I love the bright magenta ribbon at the waist for a simple but effective detail.
A sunny splash makes this mermaid style dress just dazzling. The hand painted hem is complimented by a forest green silk organza flower. The nude base of this dress is the perfect backdrop to showcase such vibrant colours.
Just a hint of the traditional about this one, with a pretty scalloped neckline falling to layers of tulle, with a violet hand painted hem peeking out. Its forest green hand fringed organza flower is a fabulous statement for the back of the dress.
I’ve picked my favourite – now you pick yours. Head over to Vera Wang’s website to see the full collection. For more inspiration, you can see more bridal gown collections on our luxury dress pages.
