About Oheka Castle

Oheka Castle is a French-style château on the highest point of Long Island, hosting one wedding a day with a Terrace Room for up to 350 seated guests and 34 guestrooms on the estate.

Oheka Castle was raised between 1914 and 1917 for the financier and arts patron Otto Hermann Kahn, who took his own initials for its name. Delano & Aldrich designed the French-style château on the highest point of Long Island, and the Olmsted Brothers laid out the formal gardens with their reflecting pools. At 109,000 square feet it ranks as the second-largest private residence ever built in America. Today it is a member of Historic Hotels of America, standing on the Gold Coast that inspired The Great Gatsby.

Only one wedding is held here each day, so the castle, terraces and gardens belong to a single celebration. Ceremonies take place outdoors in the reflecting-pool gardens and move indoors if the weather turns. Dinner is seated in the Terrace Room for up to 350 guests, with a floor for dancing, and larger gatherings of up to 1,000 can spread across the terraces and grounds. The castle's own kitchen provides the menus, and 34 guestrooms and suites, including a bridal suite, keep the wedding party on the estate. Huntington is about 40 minutes from JFK and LaGuardia and roughly an hour from Manhattan.

A château for Otto Hermann Kahn

Financier and arts patron Otto Hermann Kahn commissioned the house between 1914 and 1917, choosing the name Oheka from his own initials. Delano & Aldrich designed it as a French-style château of 127 original rooms and 109,000 square feet, the second-largest private home ever built in America after the Biltmore.

Gardens by the Olmsted Brothers

The formal gardens, with long reflecting pools and clipped parterres, were laid out by the Olmsted Brothers, the firm founded by the designer of Central Park. Beatrix Farrand contributed further garden design, and Samuel Yellin made the ironwork. Ceremonies are held here beneath the façade of the house.

One wedding a day

The castle gives its estate to a single celebration each day. After an outdoor ceremony, cocktails move to the terraces and dinner is laid in the Terrace Room for up to 350 guests, with a dance floor. Larger gatherings of as many as 1,000 are possible, and guests can stay in the castle overnight.

The Gold Coast of The Great Gatsby

The estate belongs to the Long Island Gold Coast that shaped Fitzgerald's novel, and the castle has stood in for old wealth on screen in productions from Citizen Kane to Succession. It is now a member of Historic Hotels of America, forty minutes from Manhattan.
