Marrying in Tuscany

Tuscany is the most requested wedding destination in Italy. Its appeal is architectural and agricultural in equal measure: cypress avenues, hillside estates, medieval villages, and a quality of light that photographers travel from around the world to work in.

Most Tuscany weddings take place on private estates outside the cities. Florence and Siena are nearby but the celebrations themselves happen on working farms, historic villas, and converted fortresses across the Chianti, Valdarno, and Valdichiana valleys.

The region accommodates weddings at every scale, from intimate 20-person gatherings in a private farmhouse to 200-guest celebrations on a full estate. On-site accommodation is standard at the top tier, allowing the entire wedding party to remain together across a long weekend.

Also in Tuscany

Lucca & Garfagnana

Northwest Tuscany, more accessible from Pisa airport. Walled city, rolling countryside. Smaller pool of venues but less demand than Chianti, with more availability at short notice.

Valdichiana

Between Arezzo and Lake Trasimeno. Flat agricultural land with large estate properties. More relaxed in character, suits larger guest counts with extensive on-site accommodation.

What venues are like

Counted The Tuscany venues by kind, counted from the venue records when this page loaded.

Villa

The dominant venue type in Tuscany. Grand residential estates with formal gardens, pools, and terraces. Capacity ranges from 30 to 200 guests. Most include on-site accommodation across multiple apartments and cottages.

Castello

Fortified medieval towers and castle complexes, concentrated in Chianti. More theatrical in character than a villa. Often surrounded by vineyards. Most produce their own wine, which forms part of the wedding catering.

Fattoria

Working farm estates converted for weddings. More rustic in character than a villa, often with stone barns, outdoor courtyards, and a direct connection to the agricultural landscape. Suits informal, long-weekend celebrations.

Marrying legally in Italy

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.

  1. 1
    Up to six months before

    The Atto Notorio

A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.

  2. 2
    Before you travel

    The Nulla Osta

The certificate of no impediment from your own country's authorities. British nationals apply by post to the British Embassy in Rome with a notice and an affirmation witnessed by a notary. American and Australian citizens obtain theirs from their embassy in Rome.

  3. 3

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.

Travelling from the Gulf

Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.

Other nationalities

EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.

At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

EU Travel to Europe (travel-europe.europa.eu): ETIAS, who should apply European Commission implementing decisions on multiple-entry visas for Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals (2023, 2024). Checked 5 October 2026. Rules change: confirm with the authority that will marry you before you book.

Where guests stay5 Star view

Accommodation

Tuscany offers the widest range of wedding accommodation in Italy, from agriturismo estates sleeping the entire party to five-star city hotels in Siena and Florence.

Food and wine5 Star view

At the table

Tuscan food is defined by restraint and quality of raw ingredients: aged Chianina beef, estate olive oil, aged pecorino, and seasonal truffles from San Miniato and the Crete Senesi.

Bistecca alla Fiorentina

T-bone or porterhouse from Chianina cattle, grilled over oak charcoal and served rare. The defining meat dish of Tuscany. Buca Mario in Florence and Dario Cecchini's Solociccia in Panzano are the canonical references.

Pici cacio e pepe

Hand-rolled thick spaghetti, made without egg, coated in pecorino and black pepper. A Sienese staple, simpler and more satisfying than the Roman version. Order it at Osteria Le Logge in Siena.

Mercato Centrale, Florence

The covered market on Via dell'Ariento, upstairs floor, has become a benchmark for Florentine produce. Lampredotto (tripe) sandwiches at Nerbone in the ground floor market are the essential street food reference.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano

Italy's first DOC white wine, made around the medieval tower town of San Gimignano 30 minutes from Siena. Dry, mineral, and slightly bitter on the finish. Pairs cleanly with the region's seafood antipasti and sheep's milk cheeses.

What planners tell couples

Book venues 18 to 24 months ahead

The premium Chianti and Val d'Orcia estates have very limited availability. June, September, and early October dates at sought properties go 18 to 24 months in advance. Midweek bookings in May and late September are often available at shorter notice.

Dust and heat in August

The Tuscan hills in July and August are very hot and dry, with temperatures regularly reaching 36 to 38 degrees Celsius. The Val d'Orcia landscape turns pale gold and parched by mid-July. For green landscapes and comfortable outdoor ceremonies, May, June, and September are significantly better months.

Road access to hilltop estates

Many Chianti and Crete Senesi venues are reached via unpaved white roads (strade bianche) that are slow in dry weather and slippery when wet. Confirm road conditions with your venue. Minibus transfers from a central pickup point are standard practice for guest logistics at rural Tuscan weddings.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in Tuscany

What is the best time of year to get married in Tuscany?

September is the most popular month among experienced planners. The light is golden, the harvest is underway, and temperatures are comfortable for outdoor ceremonies. May and June offer lush green landscapes and longer days. July and August are the hottest months and are generally avoided for outdoor ceremonies.

How far in advance should I book a Tuscany wedding venue?

Most premium Tuscany estates book 18 to 24 months in advance for June, September, and October dates. May bookings are typically available 12 to 18 months out. If your preferred venue is unavailable, similar properties in the same area are usually bookable within a two to three month window of your first choice.

Do I need a local wedding planner for a Tuscany wedding?

A local planner is not legally required but is strongly recommended. Tuscany planners manage venue relationships, supplier sourcing, legal documentation, and day-of logistics in ways that are very difficult to replicate remotely. Most premium venues work with a preferred planner list and can provide introductions.

What does a typical Tuscany wedding estate include?

Most premium Tuscany estates include exclusive use of the property for the booking period, access to indoor and outdoor ceremony and reception spaces, and on-site accommodation for between 16 and 40 guests. Catering, staffing, floral design, and entertainment are contracted separately.

What is the nearest airport to Tuscany for a destination wedding?

Florence Peretola (FLR) is the closest airport but has a limited route network. Pisa Galilei (PSA) serves more international routes including London, Amsterdam, and low-cost carriers from across Europe. Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is the best gateway for guests flying long-haul, with a 90-minute high-speed train connection to Florence.

How does a foreign couple marry legally in Italy?

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court.
