Marrying in Taormina
Taormina sits on a ridge above the Ionian Sea with views north to Etna and south along the Sicilian coast. The ancient Greek theatre, the Teatro Greco, is placed so that the volcano fills its backdrop, and the Greeks built it facing Etna on purpose.
The wedding offer is compact. Corso Umberto, the Piazza IX Aprile above the sea and the hilltop hotels with hanging gardens are all walkable, so the town works as a self-contained resort setting for a wedding.
Taormina has drawn wealthy international visitors for over a century. That history left grand Belle Époque hotels, experienced wedding professionals and a catering culture that draws on Sicilian food.

What venues are like
Grand Hotel Garden
The grand hotels of Taormina are its benchmark venues. One occupies a former Dominican convent, whose cloister garden is a distinctive ceremony space. Hotel privatisation or terrace hire is available.
Ancient Theatre
The Greek theatre above Taormina, dating from the third century BC, has Etna behind it and the Ionian Sea below. Private access needs authorisation from the Parco Archeologico Naxos-Taormina, dates are limited and demand is high.
Clifftop Palazzo
Noble palaces on the terraces above Taormina and in the Isola Bella reserve, with views to Etna and the coast. The cliff road below the town holds a concentration of them.
Private Beach Terrace
Terrace venues above the Isola Bella beach and the shore below Taormina, used for a ceremony or aperitivo, with the reception in a hotel or palazzo above.
Hilltop Villa
Villas on the Castelmola ridge, with views of both the Ionian Sea and Etna. They are more private and cooler in summer, and suit couples who want altitude away from the town's visitors.

Marrying legally in Italy
A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.

The Atto Notorio
A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States
American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.
Travelling from the United Kingdom
British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.
Travelling from the Gulf
Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.
Other nationalities
EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.
At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

Accommodation
Accommodation in Taormina is concentrated on the clifftop terraces above the Ionian Sea. The best hotels are within walking distance of the Teatro Antico and share its view of Etna and the sea.
At the table
Taormina's food reflects its status as a resort town with an international clientele, alongside the Sicilian tradition of the old town's markets and trattorie.
Hotel terrace dining
Terrace dining facing Etna and the Ionian Sea, with a Sicilian-Mediterranean approach, local fish and Etna DOC wines. A tasting menu with paired wines suits a pre-wedding dinner for the immediate party.
Pasta alla catanese
Pasta with aubergine, tomato, olives, capers and fried basil, a variant of pasta alla Norma common around Catania and Taormina. It balances formal hotel dining during a wedding weekend.
Granita and brioche
The almond and pistachio granita served with freshly baked brioche is the morning ritual of Taormina. The bars on Piazza IX Aprile have terraces facing Etna.
Etna DOC wines
Taormina is a base for the Etna wine zone on the volcano's south-eastern flank. The drive up passes through lava fields to the wine districts of Milo and Zafferana Etnea, and wineries offer guided tastings.
What planners tell couples
Catania is the gateway
Catania airport is the correct gateway, with direct connections from the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, and is reached by private transfer or the A18 motorway. Palermo adds a long journey and does not serve Taormina well. All guests should be advised to route through Catania.
Teatro Antico ceremony access
The Teatro Antico is a Greek-Roman theatre managed by the Parco Archeologico di Naxos e Taormina. Civil ceremonies are allowed by arrangement with the Comune di Taormina, subject to availability and archaeological access limits. The Taormina Arte festival runs from June to August, and its performances take precedence over private events. A locally registered planner with municipal contacts should handle the request.
ZTL restrictions
The historic centre is a restricted traffic zone, enforced by cameras. Transfer vehicles need permits in advance. The town is mostly pedestrianised, and movement between hotel, ceremony and reception is on foot or by golf cart on Corso Umberto. Access for each key location should be confirmed with the planner.
Etna activity
Etna is the most active volcano in Europe and erupts from time to time, but the events are well monitored and rarely affect the town. Ashfall can occasionally reach outdoor events if the wind shifts. A planner follows the national volcanology institute's forecasts and prepares cover for outdoor ceremonies.
