Marrying in Umbria
Umbria is the other Tuscany, greener, quieter, less visited, and increasingly sought-after by couples who want the quality without the footprint. The region's landscape of rolling hills, oak woodland, and medieval hilltop towns is gentler than Tuscany's and contains some of Italy's most atmospheric venues.
The region's small cities are extraordinary: Assisi with its Franciscan basilica and pink-stone streets, Orvieto perched on its volcanic tufa cliff, Spoleto with its Roman amphitheatre and medieval bridges. Each offers a ceremony context that mainland Tuscany cannot replicate.
Umbria's food and wine scene is one of the reasons it is gaining international recognition. Black truffle from Norcia, Sagrantino wine from Montefalco, ceramics from Deruta, these are indigenous luxury products that give Umbrian weddings a distinctive local character.

Hilltop Fortress
Medieval fortress complexes throughout the Umbrian hills, many restored to a standard suitable for high-end events. Accommodation in tower rooms and vaulted halls for the reception. Architecturally distinct from anything in Tuscany.
Olive Grove Estate
Agricultural estates among the ancient olive groves of the Spoleto valley and the Trasimeno hills. Working oil production with the grove as the ceremony backdrop. The silver-green light filtering through olive canopy in summer is distinctive of Umbrian landscape.
Converted Abbey
Former monasteries and abbeys converted to luxury hotels with licensed event facilities. The silence and stone of these buildings are unlike anything that can be created artificially. Several significant examples in the hills above Assisi and Spoleto.
Lake Shore Villa
Villas and estates on the shores of Lake Trasimeno, Umbria's large shallow lake. The flat water and the surrounding hills create a landscape quite different from the northern Italian lakes. More accessible and less crowded than Como or Maggiore.
Winery Estate
The hill estates of Montefalco, Torgiano, and the Orvieto DOC area. Sagrantino di Montefalco is one of Italy's most powerful red wines, produced exclusively in this part of Umbria. Estate venues with on-site accommodation and working cellars.

Marrying legally in Italy
A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.
- 1Up to six months before
The Atto Notorio
A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.
- 2Before you travel
The Nulla Osta
The certificate of no impediment from your own country's authorities. British nationals apply by post to the British Embassy in Rome with a notice and an affirmation witnessed by a notary. American and Australian citizens obtain theirs from their embassy in Rome.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States
American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.
Travelling from the United Kingdom
British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.
Travelling from the Gulf
Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.
Other nationalities
EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.
At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

Accommodation
Umbria's hilltop towns and agricultural estates provide some of the most unspoilt wedding settings in Italy, from Franciscan Assisi to the cathedral city of Orvieto and the festival town of Spoleto.
At the table
Umbrian cooking is driven by the land rather than the sea, with black truffles, lentils, cured meats, and a strong tradition of wood-fired and spit-roasted meat.
Norcineria
Umbria's cured pork tradition, centred on the town of Norcia; salsiccia di Norcia, capocollo, and prosciutto di Norcia are all IGP-protected and served as antipasto at virtually every local celebration.
Pasta al Tartufo Nero
Umbricelli or strangozzi pasta dressed with a sauce of fresh or dried black truffle from Spoleto or Norcia; the local black truffle is more affordable than Piedmont's white and available year-round.
Porchetta
Whole pig slow-roasted over fennel and rosemary on a wood spit; sliced and served in bread rolls at outdoor markets and sagre festivals, it is also a popular addition to informal wedding buffets.
Sagrantino di Montefalco
A powerful, tannic red wine made from the indigenous Sagrantino grape grown around Montefalco; one of central Italy's most distinctive DOCG wines and the natural choice for a wedding on an Umbrian estate.
What planners tell couples
Nearest Airports
Perugia Sant'Egidio (PEG) has limited routes; Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is roughly two hours south and is the primary gateway for international guests. Florence Peretola (FLR) serves the northern part of the region in under ninety minutes.
Spoleto Festival
The Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto runs through late June and early July, filling hotels across the region; avoid these dates for the wedding itself unless you want a cultural event woven into the programme.
Truffle Country Protocol
Black truffle from Norcia is a protected designation; certified truffle hunters operate under licences and harvest seasons are regulated. Incorporate truffle tastings or a hunt as a guest activity through a certified operator rather than ad-hoc arrangements.
Hill Town Road Access
Most of Umbria's wedding destinations sit on hilltops accessible by narrow switchback roads; minibuses are more practical than coaches for guest transfers and some castle venues restrict access to vehicles under a certain size.
What venues here charge
4 of the 11 Umbria venues publish a starting price. A price is only comparable with another quoted on the same basis, so they are shown by basis.

| A night | 2 | €3,000 | €15,000 |
| For two nights | 1 | €12,000 |
