Marrying in the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most logistically demanding wedding destinations in Italy. Its appeal is absolute: cliff-face towns, terraced lemon groves, Byzantine churches, and an Tyrrhenian Sea that turns a particular shade of blue that does not exist in any other Mediterranean context. None of this is an accident of geography. It is the result of two thousand years of building on vertical terrain.

The coast stretches 50 kilometres between Sorrento and Salerno. Its wedding geography is concentrated at three points: Ravello on its hilltop above the coast, Positano on its cliffside facing southwest, and the town of Amalfi at the mouth of a valley. Each is a different experience. Ravello is formal and quiet, with the finest historic villa gardens in the south. Positano is photogenic and socially intense. Amalfi town is a working city that functions as a gateway rather than a destination.

The practical realities of the Amalfi Coast are significant. The SS163 coastal road is single-lane in many sections and effectively impassable for coaches. Guest transfers require private cars, boats, or helicopters, adding cost and complexity to every element. Couples who choose the Amalfi Coast do so with full awareness of these constraints, which is why the weddings that happen here tend to be intimate, expensive, and extraordinary.

July and August

May and early June are increasingly popular: the coast is lush, the weather reliable, and the tourist volume has not yet peaked. September and October extend the season into cooler, quieter conditions. July and August are the most congested months on the SS163 and the most expensive for hotels and transfers. Boat access becomes essential in high summer.

Also in the Amalfi Coast

Praiano & Conca dei Marini

The quieter stretch between Positano and Amalfi town. Fewer tourists, more privacy, some exceptional private cliff villas that rarely appear in mainstream directories. Suits couples who want the Amalfi Coast experience without the intensity of Positano's high season.

Maiori & the eastern coast

East of Amalfi town toward Salerno. Broader beaches, lower cliffs, more accessible terrain. The Tyrrhenian light is the same but the drama is reduced. Suits larger guest counts and couples who need a manageable logistics footprint.

Kinds of venue5 Star view

What venues are like

Counted The Amalfi Coast venues by kind, counted from the venue records when this page loaded.

Cliff villa

Private residential villas built into the cliff face or on terraced land above the sea. The signature venue type on the Amalfi Coast. Access is by private stair, lift, or boat. Most accommodate 30 to 80 guests. The ceremony typically takes place on a terrace or belvedere with an open sea view.

Historic garden terrace

Ravello's Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo represent this category: historic properties with formal gardens, belvedere terraces, and architectural significance dating to the medieval period. Highly sought, limited availability, and in a different class to anything else on the coast in terms of cultural weight.

Hotel privatisation

Several Amalfi Coast hotels offer full or partial privatisation for weddings: exclusive use of terraces, restaurants, and gardens for the day. Lower in exclusivity than a private villa but significantly more practical for larger groups who need on-site accommodation at the venue.

Getting there

Airports and transfers

  • Naples (NAP) The primary gateway. 90 minutes to Positano or Ravello by car, faster by private boat from the port. Direct flights from London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, and major European hubs.
  • Salerno (QSR) Small regional airport east of the coast. Very limited routes. Useful only for guests arriving from a small number of Italian domestic connections.

The SS163 Amalfitana is one of the most congested roads in Italy from June to September. Private boat transfers between Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, and Salerno are standard for wedding parties. Helicopter transfers from Naples are used by some couples for key guests. Allow significant time for all road-based transfers.

Marrying legally in Italy

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.

  1. 1
    Up to six months before

    The Atto Notorio

A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.

  2. 2
    Before you travel

    The Nulla Osta

The certificate of no impediment from your own country's authorities. British nationals apply by post to the British Embassy in Rome with a notice and an affirmation witnessed by a notary. American and Australian citizens obtain theirs from their embassy in Rome.

  3. 3
    Before you travel

    Birth certificates

The original, with an apostille, and an official Italian translation that carries its own apostille.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.

Travelling from the Gulf

Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.

Other nationalities

EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.

At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

Where guests stay5 Star view

Accommodation

The Amalfi Coast has a concentrated luxury hotel supply along a narrow coastal road; booking 12 to 18 months ahead is essential for peak season dates.

Food and wine5 Star view

At the table

Amalfi Coast cuisine is built on the Mediterranean triad of lemon, seafood, and olive oil, with the Sfusato Amalfitano lemon providing a flavour intensity not found anywhere else.

Scialatielli ai frutti di mare

Short thick pasta unique to the Amalfi Coast, made with fresh basil and served with mixed shellfish in a light tomato and white wine sauce. The signature pasta of the region, found at virtually every serious restaurant from Positano to Ravello.

Delizia al limone

A dome-shaped sponge filled and glazed with Sfusato lemon cream. The definitive dessert of this coast, created in 1978 by pastry chef Carmine Marzuillo at the Parco dei Principi hotel in Sorrento. Sal De Riso in Minori is among its best-known makers; it is also served at Il Ritrovo in Montepertuso above Positano.

Da Adolfo, Positano

Accessed by a red-boat shuttle from Positano harbour to a private beach. Grilled fish, mozzarella on lemon leaves, and Campanian wines in a setting that has been consistently excellent since the 1970s. Reservations essential.

Cumpa' Cosimo, Ravello

Family-run trattoria on the main piazza in Ravello, open since 1929. Home-made pasta, local Ravello wines, and the kind of anchovy and caper salads that define Campanian cuisine. Unpretentious and outstanding.

What planners tell couples

The SS163 road

The Amalfi Drive (SS163) is a single-lane coastal road with passing places, sheer drops, and heavy tourist traffic in summer. Journey times are unpredictable: Amalfi to Ravello by road takes 25 minutes in April and 75 minutes in August. Build this into all guest transfer plans. Boat transfers between Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello are often faster and always more enjoyable.

Lemon grove ceremony permits

Ceremonies in private lemon groves require landowner permission and, in some cases, a permit from the local Comune. Your wedding planner will handle this. The Sfusato Amalfitano lemon terraces are protected agricultural land; access for events is arranged through specialist local contacts, not general venue booking platforms.

Helicopter transfers

For guests arriving at Naples Capodichino (NAP), helicopter transfers to Amalfi Coast helipads (Positano and Amalfi both have licensed pads) take under 15 minutes and remove the road entirely. Cost is approximately 800 to 1,200 euros per flight. For the couple or immediate family arriving on the wedding day, this is worth considering.

May and October are the value windows

Peak pricing applies June through September. May and October on the Amalfi Coast are mild, quieter, and offer 15 to 25 per cent lower venue and hotel rates than July or August. The light in early October, with lower sun angles and clearer air, is arguably better for photography than high summer.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in the Amalfi Coast

What makes the Amalfi Coast so challenging for weddings?

The terrain. The SS163 coastal road is narrow, winding, and heavily congested from June through September. There is no rail connection. Most venues are accessible only by steep stair or private lift. Larger vehicles cannot access many areas at all. Every supplier, every guest, and every catering delivery requires a transfer plan. Experienced Amalfi planners manage this complexity as a matter of routine, but it needs to be understood before choosing the destination.

What is the difference between Ravello and Positano for a wedding?

Ravello is a hilltop town 350 metres above the sea, formal in character, with historic villa gardens and a cultural identity built around music and architecture. It is quieter, more private, and architecturally serious. Positano is a cliff-face town facing southwest, immediately recognisable worldwide, social in character, and accessed most easily by boat. Ravello suits couples who want weight and atmosphere. Positano suits couples who want the iconic coastal image.

Do guests travel by boat on the Amalfi Coast?

Yes, for most wedding parties private boat transfers are the primary transport solution, particularly in summer. The road is too slow and too congested for coordinating group movements. Boats between Positano, Amalfi, Ravello ferry, and Salerno run reliably and add to the event itself. Most experienced planners build the boat programme into the wedding itinerary as a feature rather than a necessity.

What is the best time of year for an Amalfi Coast wedding?

May, June, September, and October. May and early June offer lush landscape, reliable weather, and lower tourist density. September and October extend the season into warm, quieter conditions with excellent light. July and August are the most expensive and congested months. The heat is manageable for shorter outdoor ceremonies, particularly in the evening, but the logistics pressure is at its peak.

Which is the best venue in Ravello for a wedding?

Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo are the most celebrated. Villa Cimbrone is a private hotel with one of the most famous terraces in Italy, the Belvedere of Infinity, with an unobstructed sea view at the cliff edge. Villa Rufolo is a historic complex with Arab-Norman architecture and formal gardens, used primarily for daytime ceremonies. Both require advance booking of 18 to 24 months for prime dates.
