Getting Married in the Nusa Islands
Three small islands in the Badung Strait, reached only by fast boat from Bali. The Nusa Islands lie in the Badung Strait, southeast of the Bali mainland. Nusa Penida is the largest, with limestone cliffs and endemic wildlife. Nusa Lembongan is the most developed for tourism, with seaweed farms and coral reefs. Nusa Ceningan is the smallest and is joined to Lembongan by a yellow suspension bridge. All three are reached by fast boat from Bali.

Nusa Penida is known for the Kelingking Beach viewpoint, the Broken Beach arch and Manta Point, and works best as a day excursion.
Wedding accommodation is on Nusa Lembongan, where the pace is unhurried and there are no cars, only scooters and golf carts. The islands suit couples who want a natural setting and a break from the commercial tourism of the mainland, not a resort island in the Bali sense.
Where to Get Married in the Nusa Islands
Nusa Lembongan
The main tourism island. Jungut Batu is the main beach, with seaweed farms and snorkelling from the shore. Mushroom Bay is a sheltered bay visited by day-trippers. Wedding properties are here.
Nusa Penida
The largest and most dramatic island. The Kelingking viewpoint is reached by a rough road, and the descent to the beach is steep. Broken Beach is a natural arch over a circular bay, and Crystal Bay offers snorkelling. There are no hotels suited to weddings, so it is a full-day excursion from Lembongan.
Nusa Ceningan
The smallest island, linked to Lembongan by the yellow suspension bridge, which carries pedestrians and scooters only. The Blue Lagoon viewpoint looks down from a cliff to turquoise water. It has no dedicated wedding venues.
The Badung Strait
The channel has strong currents that the manta rays use for feeding, and diving at Crystal Bay, Manta Point and Gamat Bay. Fast boats run regularly from Sanur and Padang Bai.
When to marry, and what to arrange
The season
When to Get Married
The dry season, April to October, brings a calm strait and dependable fast boats. From November to March the seas are rougher and boats are sometimes cancelled in heavy swell. Manta rays are present all year and most reliable in the dry season.
Recommended wedding months
April to October
Peak season is June to August, and the shoulder months are April to May and September to October.
Settings, travel and stays
Choosing a Setting
Boutique beachfront resort. A long-established property suits small weddings and elopements in a setting of natural simplicity.
Beach club private hire. A beach club on the island is open-air and faces the ocean, with a sunset ceremony followed by dinner on the beach.
Intimate villa. Newer boutique villas on Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan serve the elopement and micro-wedding market, with ceremonies in private gardens or on cliff-edge platforms.
Elopement and photography destination. The landscapes of Nusa Penida are among the most photographed in Indonesia. A visit needs an organised day trip, a local driver and a scouting photographer.
Getting There
The islands have no airport, so every guest, supply and piece of equipment arrives by water.
Access from Bali via fast boat. Fast boats leave from Sanur, Padang Bai and Benoa Harbour. Sanur is the standard departure point for Nusa Lembongan, and Padang Bai serves Nusa Penida. Several operators run regular daytime services. Crossings are slower in swell.
International arrival at DPS. International guests arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport and transfer by private car to Sanur. Boats run only in daylight hours, so a late arrival may need a night in Sanur or Nusa Dua before the morning crossing.
Where Guests Stay
Accommodation on Nusa Lembongan is small in scale and informal. The island suits couples who want natural simplicity rather than resort polish.
Boutique beachfront resort, Nusa Lembongan. An established boutique property and the anchor for wedding planning.
Sandy Bay area, Nusa Lembongan. The part of the island best equipped for events.
Jungut Batu and Mushroom Bay. The main arrival area and traditional village, with smaller guesthouses and boutique properties at lower price levels.
Nusa Ceningan boutique villas. Very small, private villas on the cliff edge above the Blue Lagoon, developed for the elopement market.
Good to know
Food and Drink
Food is simple, fresh and led by seafood. The islands are a centre of seaweed farming for the Bali area.
Fresh tuna. Yellowfin, bigeye and skipjack are landed locally. Restaurants on Nusa Lembongan serve tuna as sashimi, grilled whole and in local sambal, and at this freshness it needs little preparation.
Grilled lobster. Spiny lobster is caught around the Nusa Penida reef and grilled over charcoal with garlic butter or sambal matah. A lobster dinner on the beach is an accessible indulgence.
Seaweed. The sheltered bays of Nusa Lembongan are filled with seaweed farms. A farm visit with a cooking demonstration makes an unusual guest activity.
Good to Know
Legal marriage. Legal marriage for foreigners in Indonesia is complicated. UK couples usually marry legally at home and hold a celebration at the destination. A symbolic Balinese Hindu blessing, the mewidhi-widhi, is the standard format across Bali, including the Nusa Islands.
Fast boat cancellation risk. This is the main operational risk. When swell passes safe limits, boats are cancelled, and there is no other route. Every wedding here needs a mainland contingency venue chosen in advance and a spare day in the schedule.
No cars on Nusa Lembongan. Transport is by scooter, bicycle or golf cart, and the paths are not uniformly smooth. The island does not suit guests who cannot manage uneven ground.
Medical facilities. The islands have no hospital, only first aid at clinic level on Nusa Lembongan. A serious medical event means evacuation to Bali by fast boat or, in extreme cases, by helicopter. All guests need travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.
Visas and Entry
Entry rules for Indonesia depend on the passport held. Requirements and permitted length of stay are set by the destination's government and can change. Current guidance is on the Indonesian government's website and on the traveller's own government's travel pages.
Marrying Legally
The legal marriage and the celebration are separate. Ask your venue or planner what the town hall requires for the place where you plan to marry.
Planners, photographers, florists and musicians who work in the Nusa Islands
Is a large wedding practical on the Nusa Islands?
Not straightforwardly. Accommodation is small and every guest arrives by fast boat, so a large group depends on careful boat logistics and a mainland contingency.
Does the manta ray encounter work as a wedding activity?
Yes. Oceanic manta rays feed in the currents off Manta Point on the southwest coast of Nusa Penida. It is a snorkel, not a dive, organised through operators mostly based on Nusa Lembongan, and it runs all year, most reliably in the dry season. It suits confident swimmers only.
How demanding is a visit to Kelingking Beach?
The viewpoint is reached by car or scooter on rough roads and sits on flat ground, so it needs no special fitness. The descent to the beach is a steep scramble with rope sections and suits only fit guests. Guests should be told the difference.
What happens when weather cancels the fast boat?
Operators cancel when swell passes safe limits, which can happen at any time and most often in the shoulder months. With no other route, a wedding needs at least one contingency day and a mainland backup venue arranged through the planner.
