Marrying in Sedona

Sedona sits at 4,350 feet in Arizona's red rock country, surrounded by formations of Permian sandstone that glow orange, coral, and crimson in the morning and evening light. Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and the Chapel of the Holy Cross are the visual anchors of a landscape that is unlike anything else available to couples planning a US destination wedding.

The wedding tradition in Sedona is built around the outdoor ceremony. L'Auberge de Sedona, positioned on Oak Creek beneath towering red walls, offers ceremonies on a creekside lawn surrounded by cottonwood trees and canyon light. Enchantment Resort sits inside Boynton Canyon, enclosed on three sides by 1,000-foot red walls. Both properties have built their entire design around the landscape rather than against it.

Several licensed outfitters coordinate access to private overlooks and butte summits for photography-led ceremonies that use the geology as the setting. This is the most requested format among couples who come to Sedona specifically for the landscape rather than the resort infrastructure.

Sedona operates as a year-round destination. Spring (March to May) brings wildflowers and moderate temperatures. Autumn (September to November) delivers the clearest sky light of the year. Summer is hot but manageable at elevation; temperatures in the 90s with afternoon thunderstorms that clear quickly and often produce dramatic cloud formations above the red rock.

The lawReference

Marrying legally in the United States

Applies to: Marriage law is set by each state

The United States has no single national marriage law. A couple obtains a marriage licence in the state where they will marry, through that state's vital records office or its county offices, and the licence expires between 30 days and a year after issue, depending on the state. Age, waiting periods, identification, witnesses and who may officiate differ by state, so the couple should check the state they choose.

  1. 1
    Before travelling

    Check the state's rules

Contact the vital records office in the state where you will marry for its requirements, including the identification it accepts from non-residents and any waiting period.

  2. 2
    Shortly before the wedding

    Obtain the licence

Apply for the marriage licence in the state of the ceremony. A licence expires within 30 days to a year depending on the state, so time it close to the date; if it lapses before the wedding, a new one is needed.

  3. 3
    The day

    The ceremony

The wedding takes place in that state, and the licence is completed and returned for the certificate to be issued, as the state directs.

Already married at home?5 Star view

Because the licence and law belong to the state, many couples marry legally at home or at a courthouse and hold the celebration here with a ceremony of their own choosing. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens travelling within their own country need no visa, ESTA or entry formalities: the usual identification for domestic travel applies, and the couple apply for a licence in the state where they will marry.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British citizens need an ESTA or a visa to enter or transit the United States. ESTA is for travellers under the Visa Waiver Program, which allows stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business, and needs an e-passport; the passport must be valid for the length of the stay. You may not be eligible if you have been arrested, have a criminal record, have been refused entry or deported, have overstayed before, or were in certain countries (including Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen since March 2011, or Cuba since 12 January 2021); in that case apply for a visa. An ESTA does not guarantee entry.

Other nationalities

Citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries travel with an approved ESTA and an e-passport, for up to 90 days. All other nationalities need a US visa applied for through the US embassy or consulate in their country.

The state decides who may marry and how. The marriage law of the state of the ceremony applies, and the couple should confirm it with that state's vital records office.

What planners tell couples

Red Rock Ceremony Permits

Outdoor ceremonies on National Forest land or in wilderness areas require a Special Use Permit from the Coconino National Forest (fs.usda.gov). Your licensed outfitter handles this, but permits are required and not guaranteed. Apply well in advance; peak spring and autumn dates are competitive.

Summer Monsoon Season

Sedona's summer monsoon runs July through mid-September. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent and can be dramatic. They typically build from noon onwards and clear by early evening. An afternoon or evening ceremony has a higher outdoor risk in this period than a morning ceremony. Always have a covered fallback space.

Vortex Tourism

Sedona is internationally known for its four energy vortex sites (Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Airport Mesa, Boynton Canyon). Many couples incorporate a vortex visit into the wedding week itinerary. This is not a fringe activity; it is a mainstream Sedona experience that your guests will likely ask about anyway.

Red Rock Pass

Your venue coordinator and any outfitter handle this for ceremony access but guests exploring independently should be briefed.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in Sedona

Can we get married on the red rock formations themselves?

Small ceremonies and photography sessions on the rocks are possible through licensed outfitters who hold National Forest Special Use Permits. This format is increasingly popular among photography-focused couples and is one of the most distinctive wedding experiences in the USA.

What is the best time of day for a Sedona ceremony?

Late afternoon, from 4pm to 6pm, provides the most dramatic light on the red rock formations. The 'golden hour' in Sedona is specifically extraordinary because the low angle light fires the red sandstone. Sunrise ceremonies also produce intense color but require very early starts.

How does Sedona compare to Scottsdale for a wedding?

Scottsdale has more venue depth and a larger hotel inventory, which suits larger events. Sedona is more dramatic visually and better suited to couples whose primary motivation is the landscape. For a wedding of 80 or more guests, Scottsdale is more practical.

Is Sedona accessible for international guests?

Phoenix (PHX) is a major US hub with broad connecting service. The 2-hour drive from Phoenix to Sedona is scenic and well-marked. Rental car access is straightforward. The journey from London to Sedona is typically 15 to 18 hours including the Phoenix connection.

How does a foreign couple marry legally in the United States?
