Getting Married on the Sveti Stefan and Budva Riviera

A fifteenth-century island village joined to the Montenegrin coast by a causeway. Sveti Stefan is a fifteenth-century fishing village on a small rocky island, joined to the coast by a narrow causeway. It became a hotel complex from the 1950s, and since 2013 the whole island has operated as one resort, with its rooms in the converted village houses.

A Wedding on the Sveti Stefan and Budva Riviera

A fifteenth-century island village joined to the Montenegrin coast by a causeway

The island is the southern end of the Budva Riviera, which runs from the walled old town of Budva through Bečići, Rafailovići and Przno. The contrast between the seclusion of the island and the summer social scene of Budva is the main decision for a couple.

Ceremony settings are the rose garden, the stone terrace and the Miločer beach. Villa Miločer, once the summer residence of Queen Maria of Yugoslavia, sits in private parkland opposite the island, belongs to the same property and offers a garden ceremony as an alternative. The resort handles the wedding in house.

Where to marry

Where to Get Married on the Sveti Stefan and Budva Riviera

01

Sveti Stefan island and peninsula

The island is the resort. The public beach on the peninsula, north of the causeway, is managed separately. The small mainland village has a few restaurants and shops and is very quiet outside summer.

02

Villa Miločer

The former royal summer residence, in private parkland across the road from the island. It has its own rooms and the Miločer beach, with white stones, clear water and pines inside the royal garden wall.

03

Przno

The village beside Sveti Stefan, quieter than Budva and Bečići, with a small beach and terrace restaurants facing the island.

04

Budva Old Town

A Venetian-walled town on a peninsula to the north, with narrow streets, baroque churches and terrace restaurants. In summer it is the nightlife centre of the coast, so it suits a daytime or early-evening excursion better than a restful dinner.

Planning a Sveti Stefan and Budva Riviera Wedding

When to marry, and what to arrange

The season

When to Get Married

June and September suit the island resort best. Couples using the larger riviera hotels should prefer May to June or September over July and August.

Recommended wedding months

June and September

Peak season is July and August. Budva is the nightlife centre of the Adriatic in this period, busy and loud. The island is shielded by its access control, but Budva town is not., and the shoulder months are May, with the resort fully operating and few visitors, and October, with a warm sea, clear light and a quiet Budva..

Settings, travel and stays

Choosing a Setting

Private island resort. The whole island, with rooms in the converted fifteenth-century village houses. The rose garden, the stone terrace and the beach at Villa Miločer are the three ceremony settings, and the resort manages everything in house.

Large riviera resort hotel. Large hotels on the riviera have several ballrooms, outdoor terraces, beach access and full conference facilities. They are the default choice for events too big for the island.

Mid-scale riviera hotel. Mid-scale hotels at Przno and near Budva old town sit between the island and the mass-market properties, with event facilities and outdoor terraces.

Old town terrace restaurants. Terrace restaurants inside the walls of Budva suit rehearsal dinners or drinks for smaller groups. They are restaurants rather than event venues, at their best in May, June and September.

Getting There

Tivat is the most convenient airport for Sveti Stefan and Budva. Podgorica is the year-round alternative, and Dubrovnik in Croatia suits large groups with varied departure needs.

Tivat Airport (TIV). Served by easyJet from Gatwick, with TUI and Wizz Air in season, mainly from April to October. It is the closest arrival for the riviera.

Podgorica Airport (TGD). Served all year by easyJet from Gatwick. The transfer is longer, but year-round reliability suits off-season weddings.

Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), Croatia. The transfer to Budva includes a border crossing. Wider UK connections suit large parties arriving from several UK airports.

Where Guests Stay

Accommodation on the Budva Riviera runs from the island resort to large international hotels at Bečići.

The island resort. The whole island village is the resort, and its rose garden, terrace, beach and parkland are available for wedding events.

Villa Miločer. A former royal summer residence in private parkland, part of the same property, with check-in separate from the island.

Large resort hotel, Bečići. A large hotel on the Bečići seafront with several ballrooms and outdoor event spaces, the most technically capable on the riviera.

Mid-scale hotel, Przno. A mid-scale option close to Sveti Stefan, with a private pier and event facilities, useful for overflow accommodation.

Good to know

Food and Drink

Food on the Budva Riviera draws on the same Adriatic and Montenegrin traditions as the Bay of Kotor, with the island resort adding a refined reading of them.

Island restaurant. Local Adriatic fish, Montenegrin ingredients and seasonal produce in a Montenegrin-Mediterranean kitchen, with a terrace above the sea. Private dinners can use the whole island setting.

Villa Miločer restaurant. A restaurant in the former royal parkland, serving Montenegrin and Adriatic cooking. It suits a private dinner in the garden.

Adriatic seafood. Lobster (jastog), sea bass (brancin), bream (orada) and the seasonal catch from clean waters. A fish dish is the centre of a restaurant meal in the area.

Good to Know

Legal marriage in Montenegro. Foreign nationals can marry legally in Montenegro through the local registry office, with both partners present. The process takes months, so many couples marry legally at home and hold the celebration here. The island resort is a licensed venue.

Booking practicalities. Summer dates are in high demand, particularly June and September, and enquiries for peak dates go far ahead to the resort's wedding coordinator. Booking rooms for the wedding party plus an event space is more usual than a full island buyout.

Beach days for guests. The riviera has extensive public beaches. Bečići is the longest sandy beach in Montenegro, and the small Mogren coves at Budva, reached by a coastal walk, are quieter and more photogenic.

Transfers from Tivat. The road south from Tivat follows the coast, with views across the Adriatic opening up as it leaves the bay.

Visas and Entry

Entry rules for Montenegro depend on the passport held. Montenegro is not an EU member and uses the euro as its currency. Current guidance is on the Montenegro government's website and on the traveller's own government's travel pages.

Marrying Legally

The legal marriage and the celebration are separate. Ask your venue or planner what the town hall requires for the place where you plan to marry.

Questions Couples Ask
Can people who are not resort guests visit the island or its beach?

No. The island is private and the Villa Miločer beach is for resort guests. The strict access control means a ceremony and reception there are genuinely private.

Is Budva old town suitable for a wedding dinner?

For small groups in May, June or September, yes. In July and August heavy nightlife and loud music from late evening make it a poor choice for dinner, though a daytime visit is excellent.

Which beach is best near Sveti Stefan?

Villa Miločer beach, for resort guests only, is very quiet. For others, the public beach at Przno and the Mogren coves at Budva are the best options within reach.

Should Sveti Stefan be paired with the Bay of Kotor?

Yes. A programme could start in Kotor old town, move to the island for the ceremony and end with a beach day on the riviera. The enclosed bay and the open coast complement each other.
