Getting Married on the Trincomalee & East Coast
A deep-water harbour city and the clear beaches of Sri Lanka's east coast, at their best from May to September. Trincomalee sits on a large natural deep-water harbour, shaped by centuries of Portuguese, Dutch and British control. Fort Frederick, built by the Portuguese in 1623, stands above Swami Rock and the Koneswaram Temple, on a cliff over the ocean. The town is Tamil-majority, with a character distinct from the Sinhala south coast.

A deep-water harbour city and the clear beaches of Sri Lanka's east coast, at their best from May to September
The east coast follows the opposite monsoon cycle to the south and west, with a dry season from May to September. That makes it workable for outdoor weddings while the south is wet, so Sri Lanka can offer locations across almost the whole year.
A resort in a private bay, reached only by boat, is very secluded. A lagoon resort at Pasikuda is the alternative, with the most complete resort infrastructure on the east coast.
Where to Get Married on the Trincomalee & East Coast
Trincomalee town and harbour
A working harbour city. Fort Frederick houses a shrine and is open to visitors, and Koneswaram Temple on Swami Rock is significant in Tamil Hindu tradition. Hotel stock is limited, so it works better as a day excursion base.
Uppuveli and Nilaveli
The beach areas immediately north of the city. Nilaveli has the clearest water on the northeast coast, protected by a reef and almost undeveloped. Pigeon Island National Park, a short boat trip away, has good coral.
Pasikuda and Kalkudah
South of Trincomalee. Pasikuda Bay is an almost perfectly sheltered lagoon, shallow, flat calm and very clear, with a lagoon resort on its frontage. Kalkudah Bay immediately north is less developed.
Arugam Bay
Sri Lanka's main surf destination, far south of Pasikuda, known for a right-hand point break. It suits independent travellers more than wedding groups, and works only as a guest extension.
When to marry, and what to arrange
The season
When to Get Married
The southwest monsoon, from May to September, dries the east coast and brings rain to the south and west. The northeast monsoon, from November to March, is the east coast's wet season. A July or August wedding here means sun while the Galle and Colombo coasts are wet. April is transitional and often good.
Recommended wedding months
May to September
Peak season is July to August, and the shoulder months are April and October.
Settings, travel and stays
Choosing a Setting
Remote private bay resort. A resort in a private bay with no road access, so all guests and supplies arrive by boat. The absence of outside noise makes an exceptional ceremony setting.
Lagoon resort. A full-service resort on the Pasikuda lagoon, the most complete on the east coast. The lagoon is flat calm, clear and shallow enough to wade a long way out.
Boutique beach properties. Boutique properties on Nilaveli and Uppuveli beaches, and a beach resort in the Trincomalee area.
Private villa and eco property. Boutique villas on the less developed northern end of Kalkudah Bay. They lack full resort infrastructure but offer real seclusion at a much lower cost than the lagoon resort.
Getting There
The east coast is more remote than the south. The small domestic airport at Trincomalee has limited service from Colombo, so most groups fly into Colombo and continue by road or internal charter.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), Colombo. All international guests arrive here. The road to Trincomalee and Pasikuda is long, via Dambulla and Habarana, so an overnight in Colombo or Dambulla before continuing is strongly advised for groups with luggage.
Trincomalee Airport (TCR). A small domestic airstrip with limited scheduled service from Colombo Ratmalana Airport. The flight cuts the journey considerably, and schedules should be confirmed well ahead.
Where Guests Stay
Accommodation divides between two flagship resorts, one in a private bay and one on the Pasikuda lagoon, and smaller boutique properties north of Trincomalee.
Private bay resort. A boat-only resort in a private bay close to Trincomalee, with jungle on three sides and ocean on the fourth.
Pasikuda lagoon resort. Villas on the Pasikuda lagoon with flat-calm, shallow, clear water, restaurants, a spa, a pool and a wedding coordination team.
Nilaveli and Uppuveli. Smaller, more affordable boutique beach properties with Pigeon Island snorkelling nearby, suited to intimate ceremonies.
Kalkudah Bay. Newer boutique villas north of Pasikuda, with less infrastructure than the lagoon resort but real seclusion.
Good to know
Food and Drink
The east coast has a strong Tamil culinary tradition, distinct from the Sinhala cooking of the south and the hill country. Seafood from Trincomalee Bay and the Pasikuda lagoon is a local strength.
Jaffna crab curry. The defining dish of Tamil Sri Lanka, dry-fried with Jaffna curry powder, a darker and more intensely spiced blend than Colombo's. Blue swimmer crabs from Trincomalee Bay suit it, and it can anchor an east coast wedding dinner.
Stringhoppers (Idiyappam). Thin rice flour noodles pressed into nests and steamed, served with coconut milk and curry. A wedding breakfast of stringhoppers, coconut sambol and dhal is local to the region.
Lobster from Trincomalee. Spiny lobster from Trincomalee Bay and the northeast coast is sold at resort restaurants and the town fish market, usually grilled whole with garlic butter.
Good to Know
Season is non-negotiable. From November to March the east coast has heavy rain and rough seas, so no outdoor wedding should be planned then. The window from May to September is firm, with July and August the safest months.
Remote access planning. The private bay resort has no road access, so all luggage, catering supplies and equipment arrive by boat.
Ground transfer distance. The road from the airport is long. Breaking the journey overnight at Dambulla or Kandy is the standard approach, and a same-day transfer to the private bay or Pasikuda should not be attempted.
Cultural sensitivity on the east coast. The east coast communities are predominantly Tamil Hindu, and Koneswaram Temple is an active place of worship that requires covered dress. Guests need a briefing on respectful behaviour around religious sites.
Marrying legally and entry rules
The legal requirements for marrying here, and who needs a visa, are being checked and are not published yet. Confirm both with the official authority that will marry you before you book.

Why choose the east coast rather than the south coast?
Season and character. The east coast is best from May to September, when the south is in monsoon, and it is less developed and less visited, with remote resorts and the Pasikuda lagoon.
How do guests reach the private bay resort?
By speedboat from Trincomalee harbour, the better experience and the standard option, or by 4x4 on a rough track. No private vehicles can reach the bay, which keeps the resort self-contained.
Do snorkelling and wildlife belong in an east coast itinerary?
Yes. Pigeon Island National Park, a short boat trip from Nilaveli, has healthy coral and varied reef fish. Trincomalee Bay has blue whale and sperm whale sightings from April to September, among the most reliable in Sri Lanka.
Should Trincomalee town feature in the itinerary?
Yes, for a half-day with a knowledgeable guide. Fort Frederick and Koneswaram Temple are strong colonial and religious sites, the view from Swami Rock over the harbour is a highlight, and the Jaffna-style food in town is good.
Where do wedding guests stay around Trincomalee and the east coast?
Accommodation divides between two flagship resorts, one in a private bay and one on the Pasikuda lagoon, and smaller boutique properties north of Trincomalee. Nilaveli and Uppuveli have smaller, more affordable boutique beach properties with Pigeon Island snorkelling nearby, suited to intimate ceremonies. Kalkudah Bay has newer boutique villas with less infrastructure than the lagoon resort but real seclusion.
