Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi has three scales of wedding, because it is built across three connected islands in the South Malé Atoll, and each has its own idea of what a wedding is. One is a beach ceremony for a handful of guests. One is a pavilion above the lagoon for a couple and twelve others. The third is a private island with its own staff, which can be taken for a celebration of up to eighteen.

The resort opened in July 2019, and it does something unusual with its scale. Instead of one wedding venue that expands to fit the party, it offers a series of settings, from an exchange of vows with a few guests to a reception for 150.

Three islands in the atoll

Ithaafushi lies in the South Malé Atoll, and the resort spreads across three interconnected islands, with white sand beaches, reef and the open water of the Indian Ocean on every side. It launched with 119 villas, all of them villas rather than rooms, in three kinds: beach villas set among the palms behind the sand, reef villas with a deck over the water, and overwater villas linked by walkways. Each has its own private pool. Two Stella Maris Ocean Villas can be reached only by boat.

Guests reach the resort by yacht from Velana International Airport, with transfers available around the clock.

A beach for each size of party

The smallest ceremonies take place on a private beach. Several of them are set aside for weddings of 15 to 40 guests, and the couple choose the one they prefer. For a more intimate day, a pavilion above the lagoon holds the couple and up to 12 guests.

Nava Beach is the largest venue on the property. It has covered and uncovered spaces and hosts receptions of up to 150 guests into the late evening. A wedding concierge oversees the details of the day, and the couple are carried across the island in a decorated buggy.

The private island

Ithaafushi, The Private Island, is a separate island of about 32,000 square metres that can be reached only by yacht, and it is billed as the largest private island in the Maldives. It has its own concierge and chef, an overwater spa and gym, five swimming pools, an entertainment centre called Haali, padel and tennis courts and beaches, and its villas include a four bedroom residence, a three bedroom beach villa and a two bedroom overwater villa. It is reserved for celebrations of up to 18 guests.

The island works on request, not from a menu. Guests share what they have in mind and the team builds it, whether that is a private cinema on the beach or a celebration in the lagoon. The culinary team can also arrange a private Zuma Maldives or Ledge experience with a menu designed for the party, and the resort’s restaurants and bars on the main island are a three minute boat ride away. Oceanfront yoga and pilates take place in an overwater pavilion.

What the wedding package covers

The wedding package is generous in its detail. It covers the choice of the pavilion or Nava Beach, with decoration, a bridal bouquet, headpiece and boutonniere, a decorated wedding buggy and a floral bath on the wedding night. A master of ceremony presents the certificate, and the couple receive a one tier cake and champagne, a floating breakfast the next morning and a 90 minute couples treatment. A photography package of 20 prints and 40 digital images is included.

Pricing is available on request. The resort advises booking nine to twelve months ahead, and longer for larger celebrations or peak periods.

At the table

The resort has more than ten restaurants and bars, and several are settings in themselves. Terra stands at the island’s highest point, with seven bamboo dining pods in the canopy and seven course menus shaped by seasonal ingredients. At opening the line up also included The Ledge, a barbecue restaurant built around a custom oven, The Rock, a wine cellar and dining space set among boulders, Glow, a greenhouse style restaurant serving dishes from the island’s own garden, and Yasmeen, serving Middle Eastern cuisine. Zuma Maldives is a Japanese izakaya set above the water.

The culinary team customises menus for each couple and caters for vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, kosher and allergen specific requirements. A table can be set on the shore for dinner by candlelight, and the resort has two sandbanks that serve for private sunset dining.

Staying in the villas

The villas are large. Beach villas start at 234 square metres, reef villas at 279 and overwater villas at 283, rising to a three bedroom overwater villa of 1,113 square metres. Beach villas come with king or two queen beds, and reef villas range from a king to a two bedroom villa.

Wellbeing and leisure

A dedicated Wellness Concierge designs each guest’s programme after a detailed consultation. The Aqua Wellness Center has a custom hydrotherapy pool with targeted zones for different areas of the body, an ice fountain, a steam room and a sauna. The spa offers treatments in overwater or garden villas, with heated loungers and massage jets in the hydrotherapy area. A treatment suite has a glass floor panel over the lagoon, and a massage can take place on an overwater deck. At opening the resort had a 40 metre Mirror Pool, and it has a fitness centre under a vaulted timber roof, tennis and padel courts with expert instruction, a PADI dive centre and a house reef for snorkelling from the villas. Children have a club and a lagoon pool of their own.

Days around the wedding

The resort’s experiences cover most of what a wedding party might want between the ceremony and the dinner. Divers can explore coral gardens, and the lagoons can be seen from the air or crossed by Jetblade, kayak or sail. On land there are expert led tennis and padel sessions and curated wellness programmes, and EDEN Gallery shows contemporary art. Younger guests have the Stars Club, a space to create, connect and play, so a family wedding can keep children occupied while the adults celebrate.

Recognition

The resort holds Forbes Travel Guide’s five star rating for each year from 2022 to 2026. In the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards it ranked eighth among the 100 best hotels in the world in 2026 and fifth among the best resorts in Asia, and it was named the Maldives’ best resort in the magazine’s 2026 Luxury Awards for Asia Pacific. Its spa has won World Spa Awards as the Maldives’ best resort spa in 2024 and 2025.

Planning your wedding

The resort is reached by yacht from Velana International Airport, the nearest airport. Couples who need a legally recognised marriage should ask the resort how that is handled in the Maldives, and which of the venues is open for the dates they have in mind.

An island for every scale

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi suits couples who want a Maldivian wedding and are not sure how large it should be. It handles a ceremony for two as readily as a reception for 150, and its private island gives a celebration of 18 the seclusion of a separate shore. The practical questions are the legal arrangements, the choice of venue and the cost, and each is worth raising early.
