Marrying in Portofino
Portofino is a small harbour village reached only by boat or on foot. European aristocrats, film stars and yacht owners have summered there for over a century. Coloured houses round the piazzetta, the green hillside above the sea and the yachts at anchor make an instantly recognisable view.
For weddings, the geography limits access. The village has very little space, no through traffic and a small number of well-placed venues, so a ceremony or reception there depends on access and relationships.
The surrounding Portofino Natural Park widens the choice: Villa del Bello over the open sea, the Abbey of San Fruttuoso reached only by boat, and the clifftop church of San Giorgio with its views. Portofino anchors a wider Riviera wedding geography.

What venues are like
Harbour Villa
Private villas on the promontory above the village, with views across the gulf and the harbour. Supply is limited, because the headland is strictly controlled by the municipality, and booking is needed far ahead.
Clifftop Terrace
Terrace and balcony venues above the horseshoe harbour, with the coloured facades, yachts and sea as the backdrop. They are used mainly for aperitivo or afternoon ceremonies.
Historic Abbey
The Abbey of San Fruttuoso, reached only by boat from Portofino or on foot along the cliff path, is a thirteenth-century Benedictine abbey with a cloister, church and small beach. Private access is licensed through the FAI.
Grand Hotel Garden
The garden terraces of the grand hotel above the harbour can be hired by privatisation or terrace hire. They have event infrastructure, on-site rooms and an in-house catering team.
Private Piazzetta
The piazzetta above the harbour can occasionally be used for very small events outside peak visitor hours. It is rare and needs approval from the local authority.

Marrying legally in Italy
A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.
- 1Up to six months before
The Atto Notorio
A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.
- 2Before you travel
The Nulla Osta
The certificate of no impediment from your own country's authorities. British nationals apply by post to the British Embassy in Rome with a notice and an affirmation witnessed by a notary. American and Australian citizens obtain theirs from their embassy in Rome.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States
American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.
Travelling from the United Kingdom
British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.
Travelling from the Gulf
Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.
Other nationalities
EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.
At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

Accommodation
Portofino is small and selective about who stays, with accommodation in the village limited to a few top-category properties. Santa Margherita Ligure, a short drive or boat ride away, gives a wider range.
At the table
Ligurian cooking is built on herbs, olive oil and the sea. Pesto began here and appears on almost every menu in some form.
Trofie al Pesto
Short twisted pasta tossed with Genovese basil pesto made from protected basil, Ligurian olive oil, pine nuts, Parmigiano and Pecorino. It is the dish most visitors order.
Focaccia di Recco
A thin, layered flatbread filled with fresh crescenza cheese, baked until the top blisters and the filling melts. It comes from the village of Recco, close to Portofino.
Branzino al Sale
Whole sea bass baked in a salt crust and opened at the table. It is on the menu of serious fish restaurants along this coast and suits a wedding dinner.
Sciacchetrà
A rare sweet passito from the nearby Cinque Terre hills, made from dried Bosco and Albarola grapes and served in small glasses as a dessert wine.
What planners tell couples
Boat access only for some venues
Several ceremony sites and private villas on the promontory have no road access, and guests arrive by private launch or water taxi from the harbour. Timing should be agreed with the planner, because sea conditions can delay or cancel transfers.
Portofino is car-free
Private vehicles are barred from the village beyond the car park at the top of the approach road. Guests move on foot, and hotel porters meet them at the car park with luggage trolleys.
Nearest airport
Genoa is the closest airport, with connections from several European hubs. Milan Malpensa and Nice both serve long-haul guests.
Visitor limits
Portofino has a small resident population and has introduced visitor limits in peak season. The venue should confirm whether any local rule affects the guest numbers or arrival window.
