Getting Married in Brač

A large limestone island opposite Split, known for the white pebble headland of Zlatni Rat. Brač is the largest island in Dalmatia and the third largest in Croatia, directly opposite Split across the Brač Channel. It is best known for Zlatni Rat, the white pebble headland south of Bol that reshapes itself with current and wind, and for its white limestone, quarried since Roman times and used for Diocletian's Palace and the White House in Washington. The stone gives the island a pale, luminous look.

A Wedding in Brač

A large limestone island opposite Split, known for the white pebble headland of Zlatni Rat

Bol, on the south coast, is the main wedding destination, on a narrow waterfront below the pine-forested slope of Vidova Gora, the highest peak on any Croatian island. The Maestral, a north-westerly afternoon wind, keeps Bol cool in summer and makes it a leading windsurfing spot. Summer afternoons on Zlatni Rat are windy, which affects ceremony planning.

The island is reached from Split by car ferry to Supetar and then by bus to Bol, or by fast catamaran direct to Bol. Brač is quieter and less marketed than Hvar despite being larger.

Choosing a setting

Choosing a wedding setting in Brač

Resort hotel with beach access

The largest resort in Bol sits in pine forest near Zlatni Rat, with a large terrace, beach access and full wedding facilities.

Boutique harbour hotel

A small hotel in a historic harbour-front building, set apart from the resorts by its closeness to the water and its stone architecture.

Private villa and estate

Villas above Supetar and in the interior above Bol offer pool, terrace and garden settings.

Remote heritage site

Blaca Hermitage is a sixteenth-century monastery in a canyon reached only on foot or by boat. It does not suit a reception, but it makes a remarkable photography location and excursion.

The season

When to get married

June and September are the recommended months. June brings warm, settled weather, and in September the peak has passed and the light turns golden. July and August are hot and Zlatni Rat is crowded. The Maestral blows most afternoons from June to August, so a morning ceremony avoids the wind on the beach.

Getting there

How guests arrive

Brač is reached from Split Airport via Split harbour. The car ferry to Supetar runs regularly, and the fast catamaran to Bol runs less often, so seasonal timetables should be checked. Brač Airport has no scheduled UK services.

Split Airport (SPU). The standard UK gateway. From the harbour, the car ferry crosses to Supetar and a bus or taxi continues to Bol. For a group, the car ferry with a pre-arranged minibus is the most practical movement.

Brač Airport (BWK). A small airport just east of Bol that takes summer charters, mainly from Germany and Austria. Independent UK travellers should route via Split.

Where guests stay

Under one roof, or nearby

Accommodation is concentrated in Bol on the south coast and Supetar on the north. Bol has the stronger hotel offer, and Supetar gives overflow close to the ferry.

Resort at Zlatni Rat

The largest and most complete wedding hotel on the island, with several event spaces, a pool and a coordination service.

Historic harbour hotel, Bol

A historic building on the harbour front in the town centre, for couples who prefer a historic setting to resort facilities.

Private villas above Supetar

A growing number of villas with pools and views across the channel to the Mosor mountains on the mainland.

Milna harbour accommodation

Boutique stays and private rentals for groups who want a quieter, more secluded Brač.

Food and drink

Eating and drinking in Brač

Food on Brač is defined by lamb, olive oil and the Dalmatian tradition of slow-cooked meat and fresh Adriatic fish.

Brač lamb (janjac s Brača)

The island's most specific product. It grazes the limestone plateau among wild rosemary, sage and thyme, which gives it a herbal intensity, and is roasted on a spit or cooked under the bell.

Peka

The Dalmatian method of cooking meat or octopus slowly under an iron bell covered with embers. On Brač, lamb peka is the definitive version and is ordered a day ahead.

Višnjica cherry brandy

A liqueur made from the marasca cherry. It is the local digestif, and a round after the wedding meal nods to local custom.

Good to know

Before you book

The Maestral wind

The north-westerly breeze sweeps the south coast from around midday to sunset in summer. Ceremonies are best held before midday, and pine-forest terraces are more sheltered than the open beach.

Zlatni Rat changes shape

The headland shifts orientation across the season and between years with wind and current. A photography brief that depends on a particular shape should be checked against recent photographs.

Currency: Euro

Croatia adopted the euro in January 2023. Cards are accepted at hotels and most restaurants in Bol, and cash helps for harbour purchases and boat operators.

Questions couples ask

Before you decide

When is the best time for an outdoor ceremony on Zlatni Rat?

A morning start before midday, before the Maestral builds.

Can Zlatni Rat be used as a ceremony location?

It is a public beach and cannot be hired exclusively. The usual approach is a ceremony on the resort terrace or in the pines, with the headland as the photography location, reached by private boat from Bol harbour.

What makes Brač lamb distinctive?

It grazes freely on the limestone plateau and feeds on wild herbs such as rosemary, sage and thyme. The venue or caterer should source from island producers, since mainland lamb is not the same product.

Can guests combine Brač with other islands?

Yes. Brač, Hvar and Šolta are all served from Split, and fast catamarans run between islands in season. Guests should get ferry timetables ahead, and groups can charter inter-island water taxis.

Where should guests stay for a wedding on Brač?

Accommodation is concentrated in Bol on the south coast and Supetar on the north. Bol has the stronger hotel offer, and Supetar gives overflow close to the ferry. The largest and most complete wedding hotel on the island is the resort at Zlatni Rat, and private villas above Supetar have pools and views across the channel to the Mosor mountains on the mainland.
