Marrying in Dubai Desert

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is a protected stretch of desert south-east of the city. Two resorts in and beside it are designed to blend into the landscape. A wedding here is quieter and more private than a Palm or Downtown event, with a light and silence the city cannot produce.

The more exclusive resort sits inside the reserve itself. Its suites are built in a Bedouin spirit, in earth colours, each with a private pool and a view over the dunes. Guests may see Arabian oryx and gazelle from their terraces.

The other resort reopened after renovation. It has a larger footprint and more flexibility for events, and it began as the first desert resort in the country. Together they cover the range from very intimate to mid-size.

Best months

October, March
Peak season
December, January

The desert season is shorter than the coastal one. November to February is ideal, with warm days, cool evenings that call for a light layer, no humidity and clear skies for stargazing. October and March are possible but warmer. April is the edge, and from May to September the desert is dangerous for outdoor events.

Daylight and sunset

The bar runs from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month. A ceremony is usually timed an hour or two before the sunset shown.

The areas of Dubai Desert

The Conservation Reserve

The most exclusive desert area in the emirate. The resort sits inside the fenced reserve, so the dunes are protected from development. Ceremonies take place on open desert, with receptions under the stars or in the main lodge.

Around the second resort

East of the reserve, in a wide dune bowl with good sunset orientation. The fort-style compound has ceremony terraces, event lawns and a ballroom for bad weather or summer.

Private desert camp hire

Specialist companies build camps with woven tents, brass lanterns, rugs and fire pits, removed without trace afterwards. They suit cocktail receptions, dinners and small ceremonies.

The desert road corridor

The road into the interior passes camel farms, heritage sites and private estates that can host shoots and events. The dunes further out are more photogenic than those near the city.

Kinds of venue5 Star view

What venues are like

Dune ceremony

The defining format for a desert wedding. Chairs, an arch and a sound system stand on or at the foot of a dune, facing the sun. The landscape is the setting, and winter sunset gives rich amber light.

Tented Bedouin reception

A traditional Arabian tent, or a modern structure inspired by one, is set up for dinner. Handwoven textiles, brass lighting, low seating, fire pits and an oud player are the usual elements.

Resort terrace and lodge

The reserve lodge and the second resort's terraces give conventional facilities with desert views. The second resort adds a larger ballroom and an outdoor amphitheatre.

Falconry and heritage ceremony elements

Falconry is the heritage sport of the Gulf, and displays can be arranged as part of an arrival. Camel processions, Arabic coffee welcomes and pearl-diving demonstrations come from specialist suppliers.

Getting there

Airports and transfers

  • Dubai International (DXB) Direct flights run from the major UK airports. Open desert begins soon after leaving the airport, so the transfer is part of the experience. The resort can run fleet transfers for groups from a meeting point in Dubai.
  • Al Maktoum International (DWC)
  • Zayed International (Abu Dhabi) (AUH) A second option for guests flying from London or Manchester on the Abu Dhabi carrier. It is a longer drive and rarely the best routing for UK groups.
  • Ras Al Khaimah International (RKT)

Both desert resorts are a car journey from Dubai International Airport. Transfer by 4x4 is standard, and no public transport serves them.

The lawReference

Marrying legally in the United Arab Emirates

A visiting couple marries in a civil ceremony at the Civil Family Court of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department. Neither partner needs to live in the Emirates, the application can be made online, and the ceremony itself takes about fifteen minutes. Dubai's civil marriage service is built for residents of Dubai, so the celebration is usually held in Dubai or elsewhere after the legal ceremony in Abu Dhabi.

  1. 1
    Before you travel

    The documents

The passport of each partner, and evidence of divorce or the former spouse's death certificate where either applies. A British national may be asked for an affidavit or affirmation of marital status, which the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the British Consulate in Dubai issues by appointment.

  2. 2
Up to ten working days before

    The application

Made on the Judicial Department's website, through an approved typing centre or through an approved law firm. A standard application takes up to ten working days and an urgent one is available.

  3. 3
    The day

    The civil ceremony

Held at the Civil Family Court in the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department's main building beside Zayed Sports City. The court aims to complete the ceremony in about fifteen minutes, rings and personal vows are allowed, and the marriage certificate is issued afterwards with digital authentication.

Already married at home?5 Star view

Many couples complete the legal marriage at home or at the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court and hold the celebration in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah or elsewhere in the Emirates. A celebration with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner confirm what the setting allows.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens are issued a visa on arrival and need not apply in advance. The United Arab Emirates raised the stay for American passport holders to 90 days in any 180-day period from September 2024; the passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders are given a visitor visa free of charge on arrival and need not apply in advance. It allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and the passport must be valid for at least six months after the day you arrive.

Travelling from the Gulf

Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need no visa and no sponsor to enter the United Arab Emirates; a passport or a national identity card is accepted at the border. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.

Other nationalities

Many nationalities are issued a visa on arrival and others need an entry permit arranged before travel. Check the Immigration and Citizenship Authority's list or the Emirates' embassy in your country.

The visitor visa covers a wedding trip. A visiting couple does not need a residence permit to marry in Abu Dhabi.

Where guests stay5 Star view

Accommodation

Both resorts are self-contained, and staying on site is the standard approach. Day guests from Dubai hotels can be brought in, but nights on site are strongly advised.

Food and wine5 Star view

At the table

Both resorts run full food and drink operations to licensed resort standards, and the desert setting adds something no coastal restaurant can offer.

Lodge dining

The main dining room of the reserve resort is a lodge with a terrace facing the dunes. The menu blends Arabic and international cooking, and dinner at sunset is a highlight.

Traditional Bedouin welcome

Arabic coffee and dates are the standard welcome. Many couples extend this into a Bedouin meal of lamb slow-cooked in a fire pit, flatbread and rice platters shared at the table.

Alcohol and dietary

Both resorts are licensed, with wine, spirits and cocktails at every meal. Halal food is standard, and dietary needs are handled routinely.

Need to know5 Star view

What planners tell couples

Alcohol at the desert resorts

Both resorts are licensed, and the reserve's nature protection does not change that. Alcohol cannot be drunk outside the resort perimeter.

Wildlife in the conservation reserve

Oryx, gazelles and birds are wild animals in a protected area. Guests should not approach, feed or disturb them, and guided game drives allow respectful viewing.

Desert safety for guests

Closed shoes for dune walks, water on hand and staying on marked paths without a guide are sensible. The resorts brief guests on arrival.

Photography permissions

Photography inside both resorts is unrestricted for personal and wedding use. Commercial use of images showing a resort's name or logo needs the property's permission.

Ramadan in the desert

The usual UAE rules apply, with full licensed service in enclosed areas. The desert is isolated from the city, so the atmosphere is quieter than in a Downtown hotel.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in Dubai Desert

What guest list size suits a desert wedding?

For large lists the desert is less practical. Guest transport, limited on-site rooms and the difficulty of holding the atmosphere at scale point to a coastal hotel.

What if the weather is wrong for an outdoor desert ceremony?

Both resorts have climate-controlled indoor alternatives. In winter an outdoor ceremony is rarely too cold. Wind is the more common problem, since it can disrupt a dune-crest setup, so the planner should agree a wind plan with the venue.

Are there things for guests to do around a desert wedding?

Both resorts offer dune driving, camel trekking, falconry, quad biking, archery and stargazing. The reserve resort also runs guided wildlife drives, and a day in the city is easy to fit in.

What are the stars like in the Dubai desert?

Very good. The reserve has little light pollution and winter air is clean and dry. A stargazing session after dinner, led by a specialist, is among the most memorable additions to a desert wedding.

How does a foreign couple marry legally in the United Arab Emirates?
