Marrying in Ischia

Ischia is the volcanic island at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples. It is larger than Capri, less known abroad and more varied in landscape. Thermal springs, an ancient castle, volcanic gardens and fishing villages give it a wider range of venue settings than Capri can offer.

The Castello Aragonese is a medieval fortress on a volcanic rock joined to the main island by a stone bridge, and it works as a ceremony and dinner setting. The thermal gardens of La Mortella, made by the composer William Walton and his wife Susana, are botanical spaces open for private events.

Ischia suits couples who want an island wedding in the manner of Capri, with more room, more variety and lower prices. The food adds local colour, above all the rabbit and seafood cooking of Forio.

What venues are like

Medieval Castello

The Castello Aragonese stands on its offshore rock and is licensed for private events, ceremonies included. It is among the most striking structures in the Bay of Naples, and the chapel inside the complex serves as a ceremony space.

Thermal Garden

Villas and hotel gardens hold private pools fed by the volcanic springs, with warm mineral water in a garden above the sea.

Fishing Village Terrace

Terrace venues in Sant'Angelo, the car-free fishing village at the southern tip. It can be reached only on foot or by boat from the main road, and it is the most intimate and local setting on the island.

Grand Hotel Spa

The historic thermal hotels of Ischia, including those of Lacco Ameno, offer garden terraces and spa facilities for wedding groups, with all guests housed in one property.

Private Villa

Residential villas across the island have garden terraces and sea views. More are available than on Capri or the Amalfi Coast and cost less, for couples who want a private island setting without the Capri premium.

The lawReference

Marrying legally in Italy

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.

  1. 1
    Up to six months before

    The Atto Notorio

A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.

  2. 2
    Before you travel

    The Nulla Osta

The certificate of no impediment from your own country's authorities. British nationals apply by post to the British Embassy in Rome with a notice and an affirmation witnessed by a notary. American and Australian citizens obtain theirs from their embassy in Rome.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.

Travelling from the Gulf

Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.

Other nationalities

EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.

At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

Checked 5 October 2026. Rules change: confirm with the authority that will marry you before you book.

Where guests stay5 Star view

Accommodation

Ischia is the largest island of the Bay of Naples, with more varied lodging than Capri: thermal spa hotels, castle suites and private villa estates.

Food and wine5 Star view

At the table

Ischia's food differs from the mainland Campanian tradition. Volcanic soil gives its wines and vegetables unusual intensity, and the rabbit stew of Forio is a celebrated local dish.

Coniglio all'ischitana

Rabbit braised slowly with tomatoes, olives, capers, rosemary and local white wine. It is the defining dish of the island, cooked at home and found on serious menus. The rabbits are raised in underground hutches on the island.

Pesce all'acqua pazza

White fish, usually sea bass or sea bream, poached in a light broth of seawater, cherry tomatoes, garlic and parsley. It is a Campanian island technique, best with fish caught the same morning in the Tyrrhenian.

Biancolella di Ischia

The main white wine grape of the island, grown on volcanic soils above the north-west coast. The wine is mineral, saline and strongly perfumed, and the Frassitelli vineyard above Sant'Angelo is a known source.

Zuppa di pesce

A southern Italian fish soup made from whatever came off the boats: scorpionfish, cuttlefish, mussels, clams and prawns in a saffron tomato broth, with grilled bread rubbed with garlic.

Need to know5 Star view

What planners tell couples

Ferry and hydrofoil from Naples

Ischia is served by ferries and hydrofoils from Naples Molo Beverello and by a car ferry from Pozzuoli. Most wedding guests come by hydrofoil, and car ferries matter for those bringing vehicles. Services run from early morning until about 10pm in summer, so the last departure shapes any evening schedule.

Thermal spa integration

Ischia is Italy's largest spa island, with natural springs giving mineral-rich water at temperatures between 25 and 80 degrees Celsius. Most grand hotels have thermal facilities of their own. The Negombo botanical thermal park at San Montano is a public thermal garden.

Volcanic geology and roads

The island sits on a dormant volcanic caldera, and Monte Epomeo can be climbed on foot or by mule from Fontana village. Coastal roads are narrow and mostly single lane, so taxis and small private transfers are standard, and wide coaches cannot use some of them.

Ischia compared with Capri

Ischia offers island quality close to Capri's at lower cost, with fewer visitors. Capri's premium rests on its international name and the exclusive feel of its Piazzetta.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in Ischia

Can the Castello Aragonese be hired for a wedding?

Yes. The castle hosts private events and has rooms on site. Early booking is essential.

What thermal experiences can be built into a wedding on Ischia?

The island has several thermal park complexes open to visitors and grand hotels with private thermal pools. A spa afternoon is easy to add to the wedding weekend.

How does Ischia compare with Capri for a wedding?

Ischia is larger, more varied and less expensive. Capri is more glamorous and better known abroad. Couples who want island privacy with more venue choice and a more Neapolitan character are better served by Ischia.

Does Sant'Angelo suit a wedding?

The car-free village and its small restaurants make an intimate setting. The logistics need more coordination than larger venues do.

How does a foreign couple marry legally in Italy?

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court.
