Getting Married in Salzburg
A fortress above the Salzach, Mozart's birthplace and a baroque old town in the Alps. Salzburg is a compact city with a strong visual identity. The Hohensalzburg Fortress, a well-preserved medieval castle, dominates the limestone ridge above the Salzach. Below it, the UNESCO-listed old town holds baroque churches, Mozart's birthplace, the archbishop's Residenz and the Mirabell Palace in a few streets.

Two venues shape the wedding offer. Schloss Leopoldskron, an 18th-century baroque palace used as the exterior of the Von Trapp villa in The Sound of Music, has a Marble Hall with Venetian frescoes, a private lake and the option of exclusive hire. Schloss Mirabell holds the baroque Marble Hall where Mozart performed as a child, a sought-after civil ceremony location.
The Salzkammergut lakes begin a short drive from the city, and a castle hotel on Fuschlsee works as the resort option. The Salzburg Festival, from late July to August, gives a summer wedding a strong cultural backdrop but needs accommodation planned far ahead.

Altstadt (UNESCO old town)
The compact baroque old town on the south bank holds Getreidegasse, where Mozart was born, Residenz Platz, the Dom and the funicular to the fortress. Walking distances are short.
Mirabell Palace and gardens
On the north bank, the 17th-century palace holds the Marble Hall and stands in public formal gardens with the Pegasus Fountain. The hall can be licensed for civil ceremonies through the city.
Schloss Leopoldskron
A baroque lakeside palace south of the old town, built in 1736 and used as the Von Trapp exterior in the 1965 film. It has a Marble Hall, a library, a lake terrace and a formal garden.
Salzkammergut lakes
Fuschlsee, Wolfgangsee and Attersee, the largest lake in Austria, are all within reach. Many couples base the weekend in Salzburg and add an afternoon lake excursion.

Settings, travel and stays
Choosing a Setting
Baroque palace (exclusive hire). The palace can be booked in full as a private residence, with the Marble Hall, library and lake terrace used for the ceremony and dinner. Privacy and cinematic history define the wedding.
Licensed civic ceremony venue. The Marble Hall at Schloss Mirabell is available for civil ceremonies through the city licensing process. A reception can follow at any restaurant or hotel in the city.
Grand hotel with event facilities. Two historic hotels stand in central Salzburg, one overlooking the Salzach and the fortress and one in a medieval building on the Getreidegasse. Both have private dining and event spaces.
Castle hotel with lake setting. A 15th-century lakeside castle hotel on Fuschlsee suits couples who want the Salzburg programme but a lake resort for the main event.
Getting There
Salzburg airport lies west of the city centre. The city is also on the main Vienna to Munich rail line.
Salzburg Airport (SZG). Budget airlines fly from several UK airports in a winter season and a summer season, and connections reduce outside those. For large groups, Vienna or Munich offer more reliable year-round connectivity.
Vienna International Airport (VIE) with train connection. Guests without a direct Salzburg flight can fly to Vienna and take a train, the reliable year-round alternative.
Where Guests Stay
The hotel offer is compact and concentrated in and around the old town. A castle hotel on Fuschlsee is the resort-scale option.
Palace on the lake. Suites in the baroque Von Trapp palace, with a private lake. The palace can be hired exclusively as a private residence.
Grand hotel on the Salzach. A grand hotel overlooking the river and the fortress, with a rooftop terrace.
Medieval hotel on Getreidegasse. A hotel in a medieval building on a characterful old town street.
Castle hotel on Fuschlsee. A 15th-century lakeside castle with gardens, a private lake and full wedding infrastructure.
Good to know
Food and Drink
The food culture combines the formal Austrian tradition with alpine simplicity. Old town restaurants cluster around Residenz Platz and the Getreidegasse.
Salzburger Nockerl. A soufflé shaped into three peaks that stand for the three hills of Salzburg: Mönchsberg, Festungsberg and Kapuzinerberg. It is served straight from the oven in a copper pan.
Medieval banquet dining. A restaurant documented from 803 AD, described as the oldest in Europe, sits in vaults carved from the rock below the fortress. Medieval banquet evenings can be arranged for private dinners.
Mozart Kugeln. A chocolate confection associated with Salzburg since 1890. The original is the handmade version in a red and gold box, and the foil-wrapped mass-produced version is the imitation.
Good to Know
City scale and walkability. Salzburg is a small city, and guests do not need transport within the old town. Taxis cover the short transfer to Schloss Leopoldskron and the longer drive to Fuschlsee.
The Hohensalzburg Fortress. The fortress, dating from 1077, is reached by funicular. A visit needs only a ticket on the day, and private evening events can be arranged with its management.
Schloss Hellbrunn. The summer palace of 1619 south of the city is known for its 31 trick fountains hidden under tables and in stone seats. The tour runs daily from April to October and suits a wedding weekend.
Festival tickets. Festival tickets are allocated through a ballot that opens months in advance. For weddings in the festival period, tickets for the Grosses Festspielhaus or the Felsenreitschule are a logistics task on a par with the venue booking.

How much does the Sound of Music connection matter?
Schloss Leopoldskron served as the villa exterior in the 1965 film, while the interiors were shot on a Hollywood set. Many guests will take an interest in the film, and the staff there can build the history in or play it down.
Does the festival period suit a wedding?
It depends on priorities. Tickets can add a cultural dimension to the programme, but accommodation and event space need planning very far ahead.
Can a Salzburg ceremony be paired with the Salzkammergut lakes?
Yes, and it is a popular programme for destination weddings of a few days: arrival at the Fuschlsee castle hotel, a ceremony in Salzburg, a lake excursion to Wolfgangsee and Hallstatt, then departure. The drive between venues is easy.
