Marrying in Santorini
Santorini is the best-known wedding destination in Greece. The caldera, a collapsed volcanic crater flooded by the sea, is fringed by whitewashed cliff villages above the water, with blue-domed churches against the sky. That recognition is both the island's draw and its main logistical challenge.
Wedding geography follows the caldera rim. Oia, at the northern tip, is the most requested village. Imerovigli, on the highest point of the rim, is quieter, and many planners prefer it for comparable views with less foot traffic. Fira, the capital, has the strongest infrastructure and the most visitors. The south, with the black sand beaches of Perissa and Kamari, lies away from the caldera.
In peak season demand far exceeds supply. The best villas and boutique hotels for July and August are booked far ahead, and Oia is crowded at sunset. Couples who understand this often choose June, September or October.

June and September are the planners' consistent preference. In June the island is warm and less crowded than in July, with good light and without extreme heat. In September the mass summer traffic leaves while the warmth remains. October stays warm and suits couples who want the landscape with far fewer people. The season runs from April to November.
Daylight and sunset
The bar runs from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month. A ceremony is usually timed an hour or two before the sunset shown.

The areas of Santorini
Oia
The most requested wedding location in Greece, with blue-domed churches, cave houses and a northwest-facing sunset. It is dense in peak season, so the best venues are villas and small hotels set back from the main path.
Imerovigli
The highest point of the rim, with views of the whole caldera, Oia and the volcanic island of Nea Kameni. Less visited than Oia, with a more intimate feel.
Fira
The capital and main transport hub, with the widest range of hotels and services. Its view looks south toward the volcano rather than west to the sunset.
Finikia and the interior
Finikia is a traditional Cycladic village near Oia that kept more of its pre-tourism character. The flat interior grows Assyrtiko on trained basket vines and suits a ceremony away from the cliff edge.
What venues are like
Caldera villa
The defining Santorini venue: a private or hotel-run property on the cliff, with a terrace or infinity pool above the drop to the sea. The best are carved into volcanic rock. They are reached through specialist agencies and need a planner with established relationships.
Boutique hotel
The caldera rim holds many small hotels, several offering full buyout or dedicated event spaces, which gives hotel service alongside the caldera setting.
Cave house (skafti)
Traditional dwellings carved into the volcanic cliff, specific to this island, with curved white walls, rock ceilings and a terrace at the cliff edge.
Airports and transfers
- Santorini Thira (JTR) Seasonal direct routes from London Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh and UK regional airports from May to October.
Santorini Airport has seasonal direct routes from several UK airports from May to October, and year-round access runs through Athens. High-speed ferries sail from Piraeus and from Mykonos. The island is small, so transfers to caldera venues are short.
Marrying legally in Greece
Foreign couples marry in a civil ceremony at a Greek municipality. Residents abroad send the municipality a marriage licence or certificate of no impediment from their own country, with birth certificates and passport copies, apostilled and translated into Greek, and the municipality then fixes the date and time of the ceremony.
- 1Two months before, as a planning guide
Send the documents to the municipality
Choose the municipality where the ceremony will be held and send it, in person or by email, the licence or certificate of no impediment issued in your own country (naming both spouses and its period of validity), a recent birth certificate, a family status certificate where your country issues one, and a passport copy. Foreign documents must be originals, carry the Hague Apostille (or consular certification for other countries) and be translated into Greek by an accepted translator.
- 2Once the file is checked
Fix the date and licence
The municipality checks and signs the file and agrees the date and time of the ceremony with you. Under the national procedure the licence is granted by the mayor once a one-week objection period has passed without objection, and it is valid for 6 months.
- 3The day
The civil ceremony
Held by the municipality. The marriage is then registered with the Greek civil registry.
- Residency
- not required for the civil ceremony at a municipality that accepts non-residents
- Home-country paper
- licence or certificate of no impediment naming both spouses
- Documents
- apostilled, originals, translated into Greek
- Objection period
- 1 week
- Licence validity
- 6 months

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States
American citizens visit Greece without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; it is not yet operating and no start date has been announced.
Travelling from the United Kingdom
British passport holders visit Greece without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.
Other nationalities
EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Greek embassy or consulate in their country.

Accommodation
Accommodation clusters on the caldera rim, where the best-known hotels cling to the cliff above the sea.
At the table
Volcanic soil and the sea give Santorini distinctive ingredients, from cherry tomatoes and white aubergines to seafood and the island's wines.
Fresh seafood
Grilled octopus, sea bream and red mullet are staples at cliff-edge tavernas. The fish restaurants of Ammoudi Bay, below Oia, are well known.
Fava
A creamy yellow puree of locally grown split peas, served warm with olive oil and capers.
Vinsanto wine
A sweet amber dessert wine from sun-dried Assyrtiko and Aidani grapes, aged in oak and produced only on the island.
Tomatokeftedes
Fritters of the island's small cherry tomatoes, with herbs and feta, found on menus through summer.
What planners tell couples
Getting there
Direct seasonal flights run from May to October. Year-round access is possible through Athens or by ferry from Piraeus.
Best time to visit
Late June through September brings long warm evenings and clear skies. May and early October are quieter and cooler. Much of the island closes outside the season.
Wedding logistics
Most licensed venues host symbolic ceremonies, because a legally registered Greek ceremony needs separate paperwork and a Greek-speaking officiant. Many couples register at home.
Crowds in peak season
July and August bring heavy traffic, especially to Oia at sunset. A ceremony then should allow for restricted road access and peak-season premiums.
