Palladian mansion of 1734 for exclusive-use weddings · Eaglesfield, Dumfriesshire
An early Georgian Palladian mansion in woodland near Eaglesfield, offering weddings from an elopement for two to a marquee celebration, indoors or out.
Springkell is an early Georgian Palladian mansion in woodland near Eaglesfield, owned by the Johnson-Ferguson family since the late nineteenth century. The exterior is early Georgian, while the interiors show Regency and Edwardian taste, and the house gives the impression of three different periods. The entrance hall has a black and white marble floor modelled on the Palace of Versailles, with pillared arches linking it to the wings. Paintings and art treasures brought from Italy, Greece and other countries the family travelled in remain in the house, and the gardens were developed over generations by a keen gardener of the family. Springkell has been continually modernised without losing its original character.
Springkell is offered on an exclusive-use basis for weddings, with the house and gardens taken on the wedding day and the day before, as a home from home rather than a corporate hotel. Weddings range from an elopement for two to a celebration in a marquee, with ceremonies indoors or out. The aim is a day that is informal and relaxed, with the details taken care of and couples free to choose how much they organise themselves. The house is heated by a biomass boiler that burns logs from its own fallen trees, and it has two electric vehicle charging points. Dogs are welcome.

Indoor ceremonies are centred on the Wedding Room, which has floor-to-ceiling windows over the gardens, an aisle and two entrances, one for each partner, with the vows taken in front of an Italian marble mirror. Ceremonies here can be candlelit, and the golden colours on the ceiling reflect candlelight in the evening and sunlight by day. The Ballroom, with full-length windows and an ornate ceiling, is another indoor choice. Outside, the Round Garden is a secluded circle reached by a pathway, and the South Lawn sets the ceremony in front of the house. Couples can also marry in their own church and hold the reception at Springkell, and an owl can fly in to deliver the rings.

After the ceremony, a champagne reception is held in the black and white marble hallway with its four pillars, and guests move between the hallway, the sitting room, the bar and the gardens. The Portrait Gallery leads to the Lion Bar, the Ballroom and the Wedding Room. The Ballroom is used for the wedding breakfast, and a marquee with a wooden floor, interior liners, chandelier lighting and heating is the alternative for larger parties. Evening receptions take up to 250 guests. Entertainment can include a ceilidh band, a wedding band or a disco, and a piper can pipe the couple in to the wedding breakfast. Mini Highland Games can be arranged on the grounds.

The main house has 21 en-suite bedrooms, two of them Honeymoon Suites, and many were decorated by the interior design company that furnishes The Goring in London. With the cottages the estate sleeps 66. Kennel Cottage is a single-storey cottage with a private garden in the woods, Chauffeurs Cottage has two floors in the old stable yard, and Stables Cottage is a honeymoon cottage. A sitting room has games consoles, and a larger sitting room has doors into the gardens.

Catering is in-house, and couples can also bring their own caterer. A free tasting of the wedding breakfast for two lets a couple talk through the food for the weekend. Packages include canapés, drinks after the ceremony and for the toasts, tea or coffee with chocolates, and evening food such as bacon rolls, pulled pork brioche or pizza with chips. The restaurant serves seasonal menus, and the Lion Bar pours wines, spirits, whiskies and draught beers.
