Marrying in Bürgenstock
The Bürgenstock is a flat-topped promontory rising 500 metres above the southern shore of Lake Lucerne, with cliffs falling to the water on three sides. The plateau looks north toward Lucerne, south along Uri Lake and out to the Urner Alps. No road reaches the plateau from the lake shore: access is by funicular from Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock station, or by boat from Lucerne followed by the hotel funicular.
The resort has operated since 1873 and reopened in its current form in 2017 after a decade of renovation. It holds four hotels, an alpine spa, twelve restaurants and an outdoor infinity pool cantilevered over the cliff edge. The Hammetschwand Pool is the most photographed element of the resort and its most requested ceremony backdrop.
The actress Audrey Hepburn wed Mel Ferrer here in 1954 and then lived on the plateau for some years. The resort occupies the entire plateau, which gives privacy, and the approach by funicular or boat adds to the sense of arrival.

- Best months
- June, July, September
- Shoulder season
- May, August, September, October
- Peak season
- June, July
The plateau is slightly cooler than Lucerne in summer and can sit above cloud in winter. June and July are the peak for outdoor ceremonies, and September is atmospheric, with morning mist on the lake clearing by midday. The infinity pool operates seasonally. Winter weddings are viable in the historic hotel's interior spaces, but need full indoor programming.
Daylight and sunset
The bar runs from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month. A ceremony is usually timed an hour or two before the sunset shown.

The areas of Bürgenstock
Hammetschwand Pool and Cliff Walk
The infinity pool extends beyond the plateau edge, with the lake showing through the water far below. Beside it the Hammetschwand Lift, an outdoor elevator 153 metres high, climbs the cliff face, and the Cliff Walk passes both. A ceremony at the pool edge at sunset is the most requested format.
Historic main hotel
The original hotel stands at the centre of the resort, fully restored, with a grand ballroom and the most commanding position on the plateau.
Lodge and forest hotels
Two of the four hotels sit at a more intimate scale. The forest hotel's tree-canopy terraces can be used for private dinners.
Landing stage and funicular
Guests come by boat from Lucerne, dock at lake level and ride the enclosed funicular up, so the plateau appears suddenly as the doors open.
What venues are like
Infinity pool ceremony
The most requested format: a platform or arch at the pool edge, with guests seated on the deck and the lake far below. The pool is seasonal.
Historic hotel ballroom
In-house catering and the option to move between ballroom and outdoor terraces give flexibility in any weather.
Cliff Walk and forest terrace
These suit smaller groups. A point on the Cliff Walk where lake and mountains open fully, with no building in the sight-line, gives a different image from the pool.
Alpine spa and private pavilion
The spa has private event spaces for guest wellness, and private pavilions take small rehearsal dinners and family events.
Airports and transfers
- Zurich Airport (ZRH) The main gateway, with direct flights from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham. From Lucerne the SGV boat runs several times daily, or a taxi reaches the funicular base at Kehrsiten.
- Geneva Airport (GVA) An option for guests with stronger Geneva connections. It is less practical than Zurich but viable for guests combining a Lake Geneva stay.
The Bürgenstock is reached from Lucerne, which is a short train ride from Zurich Airport. Guests then take the SGV boat or a private launch to the landing stage.
Marrying legally in Switzerland
A preparatory procedure at a Swiss civil registry office is mandatory before the civil ceremony. Both spouses appear in person, foreign nationals must show they are lawfully in Switzerland, and the original civil-status documents must not be older than six months.
- 1About six months before, as a planning guide
Open the preparatory procedure
Apply at the civil registry office of the domicile of either spouse, or at the Swiss representation abroad if you live outside Switzerland. Both spouses must appear in person and declare that they meet the legal conditions, with proof of identity and original documents no older than six months; photocopies are not accepted. Foreign documents may need apostille or legalisation.

A non-Swiss spouse must be able to show lawful residence in Switzerland during the procedure (Civil Code art. 98). A spouse who needs a visa for the stay checks with the Swiss representation in their country.

Already married at home?5 Star view
Only the civil ceremony has legal effect. Many couples marry in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States
American citizens visit Switzerland without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules, which Switzerland applies. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; it is not yet operating and no start date has been announced.
Travelling from the United Kingdom
British passport holders visit Switzerland without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.
Other nationalities
EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Swiss embassy or consulate in their country. A non-Swiss spouse planning to live in Switzerland after the wedding may need a visa and a residence permit.

Accommodation
The four hotels cover every scale of accommodation, and all stand at the same altitude on the plateau.
At the table
Twelve restaurants give a multi-night weekend wide variety, from Asian cooking to a traditional Alpine raclette stube.
Signature restaurants
The resort's Japanese and Middle Eastern restaurant and the historic hotel's grand dining room, which serves French-Swiss brasserie cooking, both need advance group bookings.
Italian terrace restaurant
A summer terrace, wood-fired pizza and pasta make it the most relaxed restaurant on site, suited to family lunches.
Alpine raclette and cheese culture
A raclette station at a wedding dinner is interactive and sets a mountain tone.
Wedding catering
The historic hotel's in-house team handles all wedding food and beverage, with a focus on Swiss-origin produce.
What planners tell couples
Access is controlled
The plateau is a private resort. Every arriving guest, including non-resident wedding guests, must use the designated transport, and arrivals should be coordinated with the events team.
Currency: Swiss Franc
The resort operates in francs and accepts all major credit cards.
Weather at altitude
The plateau can sit above cloud when the valley is overcast, so weather can differ from Lucerne. Summer thunderstorms develop faster at altitude, so every outdoor plan needs an indoor contingency.
Legal ceremony
Non-Swiss nationals can marry legally through the Zivilstandsamt. Many couples complete the legal marriage at home.
Connectivity
Mobile signal is good from all Swiss operators, and the resort has high-quality Wi-Fi throughout.
Dress code
Dress runs from smart casual to formal. The main dining room and the Japanese restaurant expect smart attire in the evenings.
