Marrying in Lisbon & Sintra

Lisbon is the simplest destination in Portugal for logistics. Its airport has direct flights from every major UK city, from New York and from most European capitals. The city, spread over seven hills above the Tagus estuary, is good value for what it offers, and a wedding there brings its streets, light and food culture to guests who want the trip to be more than the event.

Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of royal palaces, gardens and estates built by European aristocrats who favoured the cool, wooded hillside above the Atlantic. Pena Palace, the Monserrate Gardens and Quinta da Regaleira are real heritage. Several private estates in the hills can be hired exclusively for weddings.

City and hills lie close together, so guests can stay in Lisbon, travel to Sintra for the wedding and spend the surrounding days in one of the most walkable cities of southern Europe.

Lisbon and Sintra are pleasant all year, but July and August bring heavy visitor numbers in Sintra, and venues there need booking well ahead. The hills stay cooler than the city in summer, which helps outdoor events.

Daylight and sunset

The bar runs from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month. A ceremony is usually timed an hour or two before the sunset shown.

The areas of Lisbon & Sintra

Sintra hills and palaces

The hills catch Atlantic moisture, which gives a microclimate of unusual greenness. Mossy walls, mature trees and palace towers show through the canopy. Private quintas offer woodland gardens and terraced lawns with views to Lisbon and the Atlantic. Ceremonies in certain palace grounds need advance application to the municipal authority.

Cascais and the Estoril coast

A coast of fishing villages turned resort towns west of Lisbon. Cascais has a working marina and historic centre, and several manor houses and villas nearby can be hired for weddings.

Lisbon city

Tiled palaces in Belem, rooftop terraces in Chiado and garden palaces in Estrela and Ajuda. City hire involves licensing, noise management and guest transport to arrange.

Setubal Peninsula (Arrabida)

The natural park across the Tagus by the Vasco da Gama bridge, where limestone cliffs drop to blue water. It is increasingly chosen for smaller, private weddings, and some villa estates have cliff-top sea views.

Kinds of venue5 Star view

What venues are like

Quinta palace and estate

The main option in the Sintra hills: a historic quinta with a formal garden, a main house of architectural character and a chapel or ceremony space in the grounds.

Palace and noble house

Smaller palaces and aristocratic residences around Sintra can be hired through specialist agencies. They are not hotels and need experienced coordination, with all catering and service brought in.

Coastal villa

Villas on the Estoril and Cascais coast, from early twentieth-century tiled villas to contemporary houses open to the sea. Several have private access to cove beaches.

City palace and solar

Eighteenth and nineteenth-century palaces in Lisbon licensed for events, many with painted ceilings, marble floors and formal gardens.

Getting there

Airports and transfers

  • Lisbon Humberto Delgado (LIS) Direct flights from the major UK airports, New York, Chicago, Boston, Toronto and across Europe. The airport is close to the city centre by taxi or metro.
  • Faro (FAO)
  • Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro (OPO)

Lisbon Airport is among the best connected in southern Europe, and most Sintra and Cascais venues are a short drive from it. Local companies run guest transfers.

The lawReference

Marrying legally in Portugal

A foreign couple marries at a civil registry office, or in a religious ceremony that carries civil effects, after the registry has opened a preliminary marriage file. Residence in Portugal is not required. The file takes at least four weeks to process, and the wedding must follow within six months of its approval.

  1. 1
    At least four weeks before

Gather the documents and open the preliminary marriage file

Passports, birth certificates issued within the previous six months, a divorce or death certificate where it applies, and a certificate or statement of capacity to marry from the home country where one exists. Foreign documents are translated into Portuguese and carry an apostille from the country of issue; ask the registry whether English-language documents are accepted. The file is opened at any civil registry office in Portugal, in person or through an attorney with a power of attorney. It states whether the marriage will be civil or religious, and an interpreter is required unless both partners speak Portuguese proficiently.

  2. 2
    Within six months of approval

    The ceremony

Held within six months of the registry approving the file, with an interpreter if needed. The registry issues the marriage certificate.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens visit Portugal without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; it is not yet operating and no start date has been announced.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders visit Portugal without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.

Travelling from the Gulf

Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Portugal without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating; it is not yet operating and no start date has been announced. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Portuguese embassy or consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.

Other nationalities

EU, EEA and Swiss nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Portuguese embassy or consulate in their country. Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal and of the Schengen area, so the same rules apply there.

Where guests stay5 Star view

Accommodation

Lisbon and Sintra together form a strong wedding corridor, from the Atlantic-facing hills to the rooftop terraces of the capital.

Food and wine5 Star view

At the table

Lisbon's food has broadened in recent years, but its lasting pleasures are still the simple ones found in tiled tascas and bakeries.

Pasteis de Nata

The custard tart that defines Portuguese baking. The original Belem recipe has been guarded since 1837, and the warm tart with cinnamon is the first taste of Lisbon.

Bacalhau

Salt cod, cooked in dozens of ways and refined in Lisbon restaurants. Bacalhau com natas, with cream, and bacalhau a Braz, with egg and chips, are the city standards.

Ginjinha

A sour cherry liqueur poured into a small chocolate cup at century-old kiosks around Rossio.

Riverside market hall

A market hall at Cais do Sodre gathers many of the city's restaurants in one riverside space, useful on a short visit.

Need to know5 Star view

What planners tell couples

Lisbon Airport

Humberto Delgado Airport has direct links with the major UK airports and most European hubs. It lies inside the city boundary, so no long transfer is needed.

Sintra access

Sintra is a short train ride from Rossio station. The village centre is car-free, and hill venues need a tuk-tuk, taxi or private car.

Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira

Both are managed by Parques de Sintra and need advance booking in summer. They are not exclusive-use wedding venues, but suit pre-wedding photography with the right permits.

Hills and cobblestones

Lisbon, especially Alfama, Bairro Alto and Bica, and Sintra involve steep, cobbled walking. Guests with mobility needs should discuss footwear and transport beforehand.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in Lisbon & Sintra

Is a special permit needed to marry in a Sintra palace or estate?

Private quintas need the standard Portuguese civil wedding licence, which the planner handles. A ceremony at a publicly managed heritage property needs a further application that can take several months. Most couples marry at a private quinta and visit public sites as part of the guest itinerary.

Is Sintra overcrowded in summer?

The public sites are very busy from June to September, but the private quintas used for weddings lie away from the main visitor routes and have no public access.

Can a fado performance be part of a Lisbon wedding?

Yes. Fado musicians can be booked through Lisbon event agencies for a reception or dinner. A proper set with Portuguese guitar holds the room and gives the evening a Lisbon atmosphere.

How does the Setubal and Arrabida area compare with Sintra?

Sintra is wooded and palace-scaled, while Arrabida is limestone and sea-blue, Mediterranean in feel. It suits smaller, private weddings without the visitor density of the Cascais strip.

How does a foreign couple marry legally in Portugal?

A foreign couple marries at a civil registry office, or in a religious ceremony that carries civil effects, after the registry has opened a preliminary marriage file. Residence in Portugal is not required. The file takes at least four weeks to process, and the wedding must follow within six months of its approval.
