Marrying in Malaysia
Malaysia offers the tropical island wedding with a difference: two coasts whose seasons are opposite, so there is always a right place. Langkawi, Penang and the west coast have their clearest skies and calmest seas from November to April; the east-coast islands of Perhentian, Redang and Tioman, and Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo, are at their best from March to October and close or empty during the north-east monsoon from November to February. Kuala Lumpur, with its hotels and its hub airport, hosts weddings in any month.
The legal side for a non-Muslim couple is a civil marriage registered with the National Registration Department (JPN), which administers marriages for non-Muslims in Malaysia. A foreign couple applies after seven days in the country, and the marriage follows a twenty-one-day public notice; the licence is valid for six months, two witnesses aged 21 or over attend, and the minimum age is 18. The single-status certificate or certificate of no impediment comes from the couple's own embassy or home authority, apostilled or embassy-authenticated and translated into Bahasa Malaysia or English. Two foreigners marrying each other should confirm the current procedure with JPN directly; marriages involving a Muslim partner are governed by Islamic law and a different registry.
Guests fly into Kuala Lumpur International, the hub, with direct flights on to Langkawi, Penang and Kota Kinabalu; Langkawi and Penang also take direct regional flights. British visitors need no visa for a stay of up to ninety days, but every foreign visitor completes the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card within three days before arrival.

Already married at home?5 Star view
Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States

Travelling from the Gulf
Citizens of the United Arab Emirates and Qatar need no visa for a social visit of up to 90 days, and Bahraini citizens for up to three months. What planners tell couples
Civil marriage with JPN
A non-Muslim couple's civil marriage is administered by the National Registration Department (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, JPN). The registration fee is RM200 when one party is a foreigner; the minimum age is 18 and two witnesses aged 21 or over attend.
Seven days, then twenty-one
A foreign couple can apply for the marriage licence after seven days in Malaysia and marry no earlier than twenty-one days after that, once the public notice has run; the licence is valid for six months. The whole process runs from about 22 to 60 days, so the paperwork starts well before the guests arrive, or the civil registration is completed at home and the ceremony here is symbolic.
The single-status certificate
Each foreign partner brings a single-status certificate, affidavit of bachelorhood or certificate of no impediment from their embassy in Malaysia or their home authority, apostilled or embassy-authenticated and translated into Bahasa Malaysia or English.
Two foreigners marrying each other
Couples where neither partner is Malaysian should confirm the current procedure and the registering office with JPN directly before planning the civil ceremony in Malaysia.
Muslim partners
A marriage involving a Muslim partner falls under Islamic family law and is registered with the state religious department, not JPN; the rules differ by state.
Choose the coast for the month
The east-coast islands close in the north-east monsoon from November to February; Langkawi and the west are at their best then. From March to October the reverse applies, and Borneo opens.
