Getting Married in the Ouarzazate & Draa Valley
A desert-edge city south of the High Atlas, with kasbahs, palm oases and Ait Ben Haddou. Ouarzazate stands on the southern slope of the High Atlas, reached from Marrakech by road over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. It is the last sizeable city before the desert. To the west, Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou rises from the dry Ounila riverbed: a UNESCO World Heritage ksar of mud-brick towers that has featured in Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones. To the south the road drops into the Draa Valley, a run of date palm oases and kasbahs towards Zagora.

A desert-edge city south of the High Atlas, with kasbahs, palm oases and Ait Ben Haddou
The wedding offer differs from anything in northern Morocco. Ait Ben Haddou is still home to a few Berber families, and private evening events can be arranged there with the local authorities. A candlelit dinner on the earthen terraces of a monument inhabited for centuries is a different category from a hotel garden ceremony.
Where to Get Married in the Ouarzazate & Draa Valley
Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou
A UNESCO ksar west of the city, a mud-brick settlement used as a film location more than any other site in Morocco. Private evening events go through the inhabitants' association and need an advance application.
Ouarzazate city and surrounds
A calm administrative town built under the French Protectorate. Its kasbah, the former Glaoui residence, is partly open to visitors, and film studios run tours.
Draa Valley (Agdz to Zagora)
The road south follows the Draa through palm oases and stony desert, with kasbahs at Agdz, Tamnougalt and Timidarte. It is well surfaced throughout.
Skoura oasis
One of the largest palm groves in Morocco, with small kasbahs and guesthouses.
When to marry, and what to arrange
The season
When to Get Married
Summer is extreme, with daytime temperatures of 40 to 45 degrees and occasional peaks above 50 in July. October to April is the right season, with days of 18 to 28 degrees, cold nights and clear light. March and April are the most requested months. The pass can be closed by snow in January and February, so winter transfers need a contingency.
Recommended wedding months
October, November, March, April
Peak season is March, April, and the shoulder months are November, February.
Settings, travel and stays
Choosing a Setting
UNESCO monument private event. An exclusive evening at Ait Ben Haddou is the defining format for couples who want historical weight. It needs a local coordinator with community ties.
Kasbah hotel ceremony. The hotel-format kasbahs offer a courtyard or rooftop ceremony with Atlas views and rooms on site. For couples who want the regional look without the logistics of Ait Ben Haddou, this is the practical choice.
Palm oasis garden dinner. Draa Valley kasbahs around Agdz offer palm gardens for outdoor dinners. They are informal and need outside catering, but a mud-brick tower and a sky free of light pollution give images no purpose-built venue can match.
Private palmery estate. A celebrated property in the Skoura palmery runs as a private estate. A full buyout suits a honeymoon extension, or the couple's own lodging while guests stay in Ouarzazate hotels.
Getting There
Ouarzazate is reached from Marrakech Menara Airport by road over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, a scenic mountain drive. The pass can be closed by snow in January and February.
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK). Direct flights from London and several regional UK airports. Convoy transfers over the Atlas turn the journey into the first event of the weekend.
Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ). A small regional airport with links from Casablanca but no direct UK flights. It helps guests routing via Casablanca.
Where Guests Stay
Ouarzazate has no palace hotel on the level of the Marrakech flagships. Accommodation is boutique kasbah or small hotel, and large guest lists are split across properties.
Former Glaoui residence. A restored pasha residence outside town, now a hotel with Atlas views. It has the most complete hotel event facilities nearby.
Central Ouarzazate. Boutique riad-style stays in the kasbah district, closer to restaurants and services.
Skoura palmery. A small desert property with a chauffeur service and a strong reputation for food and personal service. A full buyout gives a party a private estate.
Draa Valley kasbahs. Small kasbahs around Agdz and Tamnougalt can be taken for exclusive events. They are more remote and more authentic than the town properties.
Good to know
Food and Drink
Cooking draws on southern Berber tradition: local dates, mechoui lamb, and strongly flavoured food from clay ovens and charcoal fires.
Draa Valley dates. The valley grows some of the best dates in Morocco, including soft Medjool and firmer Bouffegouss. Fresh dates with amlou and Berber tea make a fitting welcome.
Mechoui. A whole lamb roasted for hours in a clay-sealed oven dug into the ground. It is the most formal celebratory dish of the south and fits an Ait Ben Haddou dinner.
M'hanncha. The almond snake pastry: a coil of warqa dough filled with ground almonds and orange blossom water.
Good to Know
Summer heat is extreme and dangerous. From June to September outdoor events are not appropriate. Midday sun at altitude calls for sunscreen and water.
Tizi n'Tichka pass and winter road closure. The N9 pass can close in January and February. Winter weddings need either a flight routing via Casablanca or a night in Marrakech before the mountain transfer.
Ait Ben Haddou planning window. A private event goes through the community association and needs a long lead time. A Morocco-based coordinator with existing relationships is a precondition.
Light pollution. The Draa Valley has some of the lowest light pollution in Morocco, and the Milky Way is visible.
Visas and Entry
Entry rules for Morocco depend on the passport held. Requirements and permitted length of stay are set by the destination's government and can change. Current guidance is on the Moroccan government's website and on the traveller's own government's travel pages.
Marrying Legally
The legal marriage and the celebration are separate. Ask your venue or planner what the town hall requires for the place where you plan to marry.

How is a private event at Ait Ben Haddou arranged?
Events are arranged through the inhabitants' association, which manages access to the ksar. A Morocco-based coordinator with ties to it is essential. The application needs a long lead time.
What is the film history of Ouarzazate, and does it matter?
The area has been a film location since the 1960s, and productions include Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven. The studios near town offer tours.
Does snow close the Tizi n'Tichka pass?
Yes. Closure is not common but can last from hours to days in January and February. The contingency is a flight via Casablanca or a night in Marrakech. The pass is clear of snow from March to November.
Which image defines an Ouarzazate wedding?
Ait Ben Haddou at sunset or in early light, seen from the opposite bank: ochre towers against a violet sky above a pale dry riverbed. A golden-hour session the day before or after the ceremony gives the strongest pictures.
