Marrying in Lake Geneva
Lake Geneva, or Lac Léman, is the largest lake in western Europe. It lies in an east-west arc between the Swiss and French Alps, with the Dents du Midi to the east, Mont Blanc visible on clear days and the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyard terraces descending to the northern shore. Cistercian monks cut those terraces into the hillside in the twelfth century.
The wedding corridor runs from Lausanne in the west to Montreux in the east. Lausanne is the more cosmopolitan end, with a grand historic hotel in its own park and private beach. Montreux anchors the east, with a palace hotel on the lake and Chillon Castle in view.
This is Romandy, the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The food is French-inflected, the local wine is Chasselas, and the pace is more relaxed than in Zurich or Bern. For UK couples, direct flights to Geneva and steady weather from May to October keep the logistics simple.

The lake's thermal mass moderates the climate. May to October is the outdoor season. June and July are warm and reliable, and August is the busiest month at every venue. September is often the most beautiful, with golden light on the terraces and the start of the harvest. From November to April outdoor ceremonies are impractical, though interior spaces work all year.
Daylight and sunset
The bar runs from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month. A ceremony is usually timed an hour or two before the sunset shown.

Lausanne and Ouchy
The best-connected part of the shore, with a grand hotel directly on the waterfront and a promenade, museum and terrace restaurants nearby. A lakeside lawn ceremony has the Lavaux terraces across the water.
Lavaux UNESCO terraces
Stone-walled vineyard terraces between Lausanne and Vevey, with lake views at every level. Several private wine domaines hold event licences.
Vevey and La Tour-de-Peilz
A quieter stretch of shore where Charlie Chaplin lived for his last 25 years. Smaller boutique hotels suit guests who want the lake without the density of Montreux.
Montreux and Chillon
The eastern end of the Swiss Riviera. Château de Chillon, a medieval island fortress and the most visited historic monument in Switzerland, is open for private evening hire. The mountain backdrop is closer and steeper here.
What venues are like
Palace hotel and park
The defining venue type. The palace hotels at Lausanne and Montreux have large private grounds, ballrooms and several outdoor ceremony spaces.
Vineyard domaine and wine cellar
Several Lavaux domaines have stone-vaulted cellars and terrace gardens. A small ceremony and dinner at a working estate is the most culturally specific format on the lake.
Château and historic property
Chillon takes private evening events, and smaller private châteaux accept bookings through specialist agencies. All require external catering.
Belle époque lakeside villa
Private villas along the shore can be hired through specialist agents. One with a boat landing and a terrace over the water is more intimate than a palace hotel.

Airports and transfers
- Geneva Airport (GVA) Direct flights from London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol and Birmingham. Passport control, baggage and the train link sit inside one building, which makes it one of the most convenient airports in Europe.
- Zurich Airport (ZRH) A secondary option for guests flying from UK regional airports that Geneva does not serve. For Lake Geneva events, Geneva is strongly preferred.
- Eurostar and TGV Lyria Eurostar runs to Paris and TGV Lyria continues to Lausanne or Montreux. The journey is long but entirely on fast trains with no airport transit.
Geneva Airport (GVA) is the main gateway, with direct services from several UK airports and a direct train to Lausanne. The Eurostar to Paris with an onward TGV suits guests who prefer rail.
Marrying legally in Switzerland
A preparatory procedure at a Swiss civil registry office is mandatory before the civil ceremony. Both spouses appear in person, foreign nationals must show they are lawfully in Switzerland, and the original civil-status documents must not be older than six months.
- 1About six months before, as a planning guide
Open the preparatory procedure
Apply at the civil registry office of the domicile of either spouse, or at the Swiss representation abroad if you live outside Switzerland. Both spouses must appear in person and declare that they meet the legal conditions, with proof of identity and original documents no older than six months; photocopies are not accepted. Foreign documents may need apostille or legalisation.
- 2When the procedure is closed
Receive the go-ahead
A non-Swiss spouse must be able to show lawful residence in Switzerland during the procedure (Civil Code art. 98). A spouse who needs a visa for the stay checks with the Swiss representation in their country.

Already married at home?5 Star view
Only the civil ceremony has legal effect. Many couples marry in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States
American citizens visit Switzerland without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules, which Switzerland applies. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; it is not yet operating and no start date has been announced.
Travelling from the United Kingdom
British passport holders visit Switzerland without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.
Other nationalities
EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Swiss embassy or consulate in their country. A non-Swiss spouse planning to live in Switzerland after the wedding may need a visa and a residence permit.

Accommodation
The lake has the deepest hotel offer in French-speaking Switzerland. Most guests stay in the palace hotels or in smaller properties on the shore.
At the table
The cooking is French-inflected, the wine is local, and dining is more relaxed and generous than in the German-speaking cantons.
Lavaux Chasselas and local wines
The Lavaux AOC makes a dry, mineral, slightly saline white on the terraces. The Vaud appellation also gives Pinot Noir and Gamaret. Pouring only local wine states a sense of place.
Filets de perche du lac
Small perch from the lake are pan-fried in butter with lemon and served with boiled potatoes. The dish appears at virtually every lakeside restaurant.
Fondue and raclette
A fondue station at the cocktail hour is convivial, and raclette, melted against a heat source and scraped onto potatoes, is more interactive. Both pair with local white wine.
Palace hotel dining
Both palace hotels run their own restaurants, and their wedding catering teams work to the same standard.
What planners tell couples
Currency: Swiss Franc
Many venues accept euros but give change in francs. Card payment is universal.
Switzerland is expensive
Accommodation, food and transport cost significantly more than comparable quality in France or Italy, so budget-conscious guests should be briefed.
Legal ceremony in Switzerland
Foreign nationals who want to marry legally apply in advance to the local Zivilstandsamt, the civil registry office. Many couples complete the legal marriage at home. A notary or planner advises on documentation.
Language
The lake shore is French-speaking. Most venue staff speak good English, and a basic French greeting is well received.
The Swiss train network
The SBB system connects Geneva Airport, Lausanne, Vevey and Montreux with punctual services. A Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, buses and lake boats.
Electricity and adaptors
Switzerland uses Type J plugs, so UK guests need an adaptor. The voltage is 230V, the same as in the UK.
