Marrying in Marbella

Marbella is the Spanish destination that works all year. It has deep international hotel infrastructure and a long-established high-net-worth residential community. The Sierra Blanca rises sharply behind the town, and in the foothills above Marbella and Benahavís, hillside cortijos and golf estates offer a different register from the resort hotels below.

The wedding map divides between the coastal resort strip and the inland hill country. The Golden Mile, between Marbella and Puerto Banús, is the most developed hotel zone on the Costa del Sol. The Benahavís and La Zagaleta area offers mountain views, olive terraces and very private estates.

The case for Marbella rests on year-round viability, strong hotel and villa infrastructure, and event planning professionalism built over decades of work with international clients. Málaga Airport has among the best UK connections of any Spanish airport.

Peak season
July and August

Marbella works all year. January and February are the coolest months but stay mild enough for outdoor ceremonies at midday. April to June brings comfortable temperatures, green hillsides and lower venue pricing than high summer. September to November is increasingly favoured: the crowds have gone and the sea keeps its warmth through October. July and August are the most expensive months, and midday heat makes ceremony timing critical.

Daylight and sunset

The bar runs from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month. A ceremony is usually timed an hour or two before the sunset shown.

The areas of Marbella

The Golden Mile and Puerto Banús

The developed coastal strip between Marbella Old Town and Puerto Banús, with seafront villa estates and resort hotels. It suits resort-format weddings where hotel services and sea views come first.

Benahavís and the Sierra Blanca foothills

Hill country rising into the Sierra Blanca, a short drive inland. Benahavís sits at the head of a mountain valley, ringed by private estates. La Zagaleta, a gated community, holds some of the largest private villas in Europe. It suits couples who want mountain scenery and privacy.

Marbella Old Town and the Casco Antiguo

The historic centre, built around the orange-tree Plaza de los Naranjos, with whitewashed lanes rising from the port. A few private townhouses and converted historic properties can be hired for intimate events.

Estepona and the western Costa del Sol

The coast toward Sotogrande has comparable villa and hotel stock at lower prices. Estepona has been regenerated and draws couples who want Costa del Sol quality without the Marbella premium. Sotogrande, at the Gibraltar border, has a polo and equestrian culture.

Private villa

Hillside villas around Benahavís and La Zagaleta, some very large, with infinity pools, tennis courts and wide mountain and sea views. Most are reached only through specialist agencies that hold relationships with the owners.

Cortijo estate

Traditional Andalusian farmhouses in the hill country toward the Serranía de Ronda, with whitewashed courtyards, olive terraces and views to the Mediterranean.

Getting there

Airports and transfers

  • Malaga (AGP) The primary and most practical gateway, among the best-connected Spanish airports for UK travellers.

Málaga Airport (AGP) is the main gateway, with direct routes from all major UK airports all year. Gibraltar Airport (GIB) lies near Sotogrande and has limited UK connections. The AP-7 motorway links Málaga to Marbella and runs west to Estepona and Sotogrande.

The lawReference

Marrying legally in Spain

A civil marriage in Spain follows a prior file (acta or expediente) that proves each partner is free and able to marry; it is opened where at least one of the couple has their domicile. When the file is approved, the ceremony is held before the mayor or a delegated councillor, a notary or a court official. Both partners are heard privately and separately first.

  1. 1
Months before; no fixed minimum in the Civil Code

    Open the marriage file

A notary (acta) or the Civil Registry or court official (expediente) of the place where one of the couple is domiciled opens the file to confirm capacity and the absence of any impediment. A couple resident abroad is dealt with by the Spanish consular official in the country of residence.

  2. 2
    Before the ceremony

    Hearing and authorisation

Each partner is heard privately and separately. The file ends in a decision that authorises or refuses the marriage. If the marriage is not celebrated within a year of publication of the notices, the file must be repeated.

  3. 3
    The day

    The ceremony

Held before the mayor or a councillor the mayor delegates, or before a notary freely chosen by the couple; where a court official handled the file the couple may choose that official, another, or the mayor. Each partner is asked whether they consent to the marriage and the officiant declares them married.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders visit Spain without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.

Other nationalities

EU, EEA and Swiss nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Spanish embassy or consulate in their country. The Balearic and Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are covered by the same Spanish civil-marriage law; check Schengen rules for Ceuta and Melilla with the Spanish embassy.

Reference Spanish Civil Code, articles 49, 50, 51, 56, 57 and 58, and Ley 20/2011 del Registro Civil, article 58 (boe.es, read 2026-10-21). gov.uk: Spain entry requirements (travel advice, read 2026-10-21). European Union entry rules for visa-exempt visitors (EES, ETIAS) and European Commission implementing decisions on multiple-entry visas for Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals. Checked 21 October 2026. Rules change: confirm with the authority that will marry you before you book.

Accommodation

Marbella has a complete international hotel offer, anchored by resort hotels on the Golden Mile and supplemented by private villa estates in the Benahavís foothills.

Food and wine5 Star view

At the table

Dining joins the deep Andalusian food tradition of southern Spain with an international restaurant culture built over decades of tourism.

Tapas culture in the Old Town

The Old Town keeps a strong tapas bar tradition beside the international restaurants of the Golden Mile. Around the Plaza de los Naranjos the staples are gazpacho, croquetas, boquerones en vinagre and grilled fish from the Malaga coast.

Grilled fresh fish (espeto)

The Malaga coast method for fish: sardines or sea bream on bamboo skewers, grilled over vine cuttings in a half-boat on the beach. It belongs to the chiringuito beach restaurants of the Costa del Sol and is far from resort hotel food.

What planners tell couples

Summer heat and ceremony timing

Midday heat in July and August makes outdoor ceremonies best held early or in the evening. Planners usually set the ceremony for late afternoon, the aperitivo at sunset and dinner after dark, which also gives the best photography light. April to June and September to November allow a much wider outdoor window.

La Zagaleta access requires a planner

La Zagaleta is a private gated estate with controlled access. No part of a villa wedding there can be arranged without a planner who has a direct relationship with the owner and the estate management. Approaching either directly does not work.

Year-round viability for winter dates

A December, January or February wedding needs no large compromise on the outdoor experience, and winter venue pricing is substantially lower than in peak summer. Experienced planners deliver such weddings regularly.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in Marbella

Can a wedding be held at La Zagaleta?

La Zagaleta is a private estate above Benahavís. Owners occasionally make properties available for private events through specialist agencies, and access needs a planner with a direct relationship with them.

Is Marbella viable for a winter wedding?

Yes. January and February suit an outdoor afternoon ceremony followed by an indoor dinner. Pricing is significantly lower than in peak season.

What character does the Benahavís hill country have?

The landscape shifts quickly from coastal plain to pine-forested slopes below the Sierra Blanca. Properties combine mountain views and cortijo architecture with closeness to the coast, without the density of the resort strip.

How does a foreign couple marry legally in Spain?
