Getting Married in Cinque Terre

Five cliff villages on the Ligurian coast, reached by train, boat or foot. The Cinque Terre are five medieval fishing villages on a near-vertical coast above the Ligurian Sea: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Each has its own character, and all are reached by train, boat or on foot.

A Wedding in Cinque Terre

Five cliff villages on the Ligurian coast, reached by train, boat or foot

The limits shape the wedding. With no roads there are no cars and no marquees, so the villages are small and the venues intimate. The setting is coloured houses stacked on cliff edges above clear water.

A Cinque Terre wedding works best when it is small and well organised: a ceremony in a clifftop church, a reception on a terrace above the sea, and guests who enjoy arriving by boat or by train through the coastal tunnels.

Settings, travel and stays

Choosing a Setting

Clifftop Church. Small clifftop churches above Manarola and Riomaggiore, reached on foot by vine paths. They have ceremony positions above the sea and are licensed for symbolic ceremonies and blessings.

Restaurant Terrace. The terrace restaurants of the coastal towns serve informal reception dinners after a ceremony above, with sea views from the tables. The register is relaxed and true to the coast.

Harbour Viewpoint. The harbour piazzas of Vernazza and Manarola are among the best-known viewpoints in the region, licensed for private ceremonies through the Comune.

Private Villa. Villas in the hinterland above the coastal towns, with terraces over the vine terraces and the sea, reached on foot or by 4x4. They are private.

Boat Charter. Wooden fishing boats and motorboats based in the five harbours carry wedding-day transfers, sunset aperitivo charters and small ceremonies on the water.

Getting There

The Cinque Terre are reached by train to La Spezia and then the coastal railway. Guests should be told not to bring large luggage into the villages.

Where Guests Stay

The villages cling to steep cliffs with no room for large hotels. Accommodation is mostly small guesthouses and apartments, and Monterosso has the most conventional hotels.

Monterosso al Mare. The only village with a proper beach and the largest hotel stock. It suits wedding parties who want a seafront room and easier road access.

Vernazza. A photogenic village with a small natural harbour and tower ruins. Rooms are mostly above restaurants or in converted fishermen's houses, and they book far ahead.

Manarola. A popular base for cliffside views with fewer crowds than Vernazza. The walk towards Corniglia gives a well-known sunset view.

La Spezia. The nearest city, a short train ride away, has full hotel infrastructure and works as an overflow base with rail access to all five villages.

Good to know

Food and Drink

Food on the Cinque Terre is labour-intensive, with terraced vineyards and herb gardens cut into cliffs that can be farmed only by hand.

Pesto Genovese. Made with protected Genovese basil, ground by hand with olive oil, pine nuts and aged cheese, and served on trofie and trenette.

Focaccia Classica. Ligurian focaccia is thicker and oilier than other Italian flatbreads, deeply dimpled and finished with coarse salt. Bakeries in all five villages sell it warm in the morning.

Acciughe sotto Sale. Anchovies preserved in local sea salt, layered in terracotta jars and cured for months. They are eaten on toast or folded into sauces.

Good to Know

No road between villages. Cars cannot drive between the five villages. Guests travel by train, with a few minutes between stops, or by seasonal ferry. The coastal footpaths are steep and uneven and do not suit formal wedding clothes.

National park fee. A day pass is needed to use the main coastal trail and some viewpoints, paid at the station or park offices. The fee changes by season and should be checked.

Nearest airports. Pisa is the most convenient gateway, and Genoa is about equally far from the northern end of the park. From both airports a fast train runs to La Spezia.

Permits and small spaces. Most ceremony spaces in the villages are small and permit-regulated. Gatherings above a certain size may need coordination with the national park authority, so a planner with links to the local comune is needed.

Marrying legally and entry rules

The legal requirements for marrying here, and who needs a visa, are being checked and are not published yet. Confirm both with the official authority that will marry you before you book.

Questions Couples Ask
How do guests reach the Cinque Terre for a wedding?

Regional trains from La Spezia or Genoa stop at each village. Boats run between villages in summer. Transfers need careful planning, and guests must be comfortable walking steep paths.

Is the Cinque Terre suitable for older or less mobile guests?

With care. Monterosso has the flattest ground. The other villages have steep stairs and cliff paths. For less mobile guests, Monterosso or a nearby coastal town with boat or train access is the practical base.

Can the wedding party hire a boat between the villages?

Yes. Private boat hire between the five villages is popular, and it turns a logistical task into part of the day.

What does the Cinque Terre offer a photographer?

Clifftop views at golden hour, boats in the harbours and coloured building facades. A photographer who knows the coast can plan a shot list around them.
