A Wedding in Lombardy
Lakeside villas, wine estates and walled towns in northern Italy
Lake Como is the most requested destination in the region. The west shore from Cernobbio to Lenno holds a concentration of historic villa properties, among them Villa d'Este, Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta. Each is a distinct estate rather than a hotel set up for events.
Outside the lakes, the wine estates of Franciacorta, east of Brescia, offer privacy on working vineyards. Bergamo's upper city, enclosed in Venetian walls, is a small walled city with far fewer visitors than Como.

When to get married
June gives long evening light on the lake and reliable warmth without the July and August crowds. September brings clear skies and the first vine colour in Franciacorta. April and October are mild and quiet, and some couples choose a winter date for exclusive access and lower cost.
Getting there
How guests arrive
Private water taxis are the standard way to move wedding parties on Lake Como, and the arrival by boat becomes part of the day. Availability is limited in July and August, so transfers should be booked through a planner well ahead.
Milan Malpensa (MXP). The main international gateway, with direct routes from North America, the Middle East and Asia and all major European hubs. It is the usual airport for Como and Maggiore weddings.
Milan Linate (LIN). The city airport, closer to Milan and with fewer international routes. It suits European guests arriving through connecting hubs.
Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY). The most economical gateway for European guests, close to Bergamo and within reach of Como.
Zurich (ZRH). A cross-border option by motorway from Lake Como, with strong North American and intercontinental connections.
Where guests stay
Under one roof, or nearby
Lombardy has the largest economy in Italy, and its accommodation ranges from grand lake hotels to Milan's design hotels and the estates of Franciacorta.
Lake Como
Grand hotels in Cernobbio, Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio sit on both branches of the Y-shaped lake. Some have pools on the water.
Lake Garda
The largest lake in Italy, with Sirmione on its southern tip and Gardone Riviera on the western shore. Both have established high-end hotels and wedding venues.
Franciacorta Wine Country
The sparkling wine zone between Brescia and Lake Iseo has a growing cluster of estate hotels. A stay on a producer's estate combines ceremony, reception and cellar visits in one place.

Eating and drinking in Lombardy
Lombard cooking covers the butter-based tradition of Milan, the lake fish of Como and Garda, and the sparkling wine culture of Franciacorta.
Risotto alla Milanese
Carnaroli rice cooked in bone-marrow butter and finished with saffron and Parmigiano. The saffron gives the gold colour, and the dish is traditionally served with ossobuco.
Cotoletta alla Milanese
A bone-in veal chop, breadcrumbed and fried in clarified butter. It differs from Wiener Schnitzel in being cooked on the bone.
Pizzoccheri della Valtellina
Short buckwheat pasta cooked with savoy cabbage, potatoes and melted Bitto or Casera cheese. It is a mountain dish from the valley north of Lake Como, suited to an autumn dinner.
Good to know
Before you book
Milan airport choice
Milan has three airports. Malpensa handles most long-haul and many European routes and lies north-west of the city. Linate is close to the centre with European flights only. Bergamo serves low-cost carriers. Malpensa is the most direct gateway for Lake Como.
Lake Como boat schedules
Public ferries run on a fixed timetable that thins out after early evening. Guests who rely on them to return to their hotels after a reception should check the last service and arrange private water taxis for late departures.
Fashion Week dates
Milan holds two fashion weeks each year, in February and September. Hotel prices rise steeply and availability falls across the city and its surroundings. These windows are best avoided unless the wedding has a fashion link.
Bergamo as an alternative to Milan
Bergamo Alta is close to Orio al Serio airport and is a lower-cost alternative to Milan for a city-based wedding. The walled upper city has several licensed ceremony venues and its own food culture.
Entering Italy
UK and Canadian visitors may stay up to 90 days in any 180. ETIAS is not yet operating, and the Entry/Exit System has run since 10 April 2026. Check the guidance for your own passport.
Marrying legally in Italy
Checked 5 November 2026The ceremony
A civil marriage at the town hall (the comune) has legal effect. A Catholic ceremony can carry civil effect. A non-Catholic religious ceremony needs a civil ceremony first.
The paperwork
A foreign partner needs a nulla osta, or its embassy equivalent. Documents from outside the EU need an apostille and an Italian translation, and must be under six months old.
On the day
Two adult witnesses with photo ID are required, and an interpreter if a spouse or witness does not speak Italian. Each comune sets its own checklist, so contact the one that will marry you well ahead.

Questions couples ask
Before you decide
Is a legal ceremony possible at Villa del Balbianello?
Yes. The villa is managed by the FAI, the Italian heritage trust, and is licensed for civil ceremonies. The FAI controls the calendar and allocates a small number of wedding dates each season, so enquiries should go in very early.
How many guests can a lake villa hold?
Most historic villas have a practical limit for a seated dinner unless the setting is changed with temporary structures. A planner advises which properties work at a given guest count.
How do guests travel between lake towns?
By private water taxi or by the public ferry. Private taxis are faster and can be timed to the wedding day. The public ferry suits leisure transfers. A planner should manage all boat logistics for the day as one operation.
Are there noise restrictions at Como venues?
Yes. Most lakeside municipalities set noise limits that require amplified music to stop around midnight or one in the morning, and sound travels over water. Many venues set earlier cutoffs themselves. The terms should be confirmed with the venue before the entertainment schedule is built.
When is the best time of year for a Lake Como or Lombardy wedding?
June gives long evening light on the lake and reliable warmth without the July and August crowds. September brings clear skies and the first vine colour in Franciacorta. April and October are mild and quiet, and some couples choose a winter date for exclusive access and lower cost.
