Getting Married in Tea Country & Nuwara Eliya

Tea estates, colonial planters' bungalows and hill station towns in the cool central hills of Sri Lanka. The tea country of central Sri Lanka is a landscape of rolling hills covered in the geometric green of tea bushes. Colonial bungalows built by British planters in the 19th century dot the estates and survive in near-original condition. The air is cool, the light differs from the coast, and the pace slows.

A Wedding in Tea Country & Nuwara Eliya

Tea estates, colonial planters' bungalows and hill station towns in the cool central hills of Sri Lanka

Five historic estate bungalows in the Bogawantalawa Valley near Hatton are offered for exclusive hire, each on a working tea estate. A ceremony in the tea fields with a colonial bungalow behind has no equivalent elsewhere in Sri Lanka.

Nuwara Eliya was the hill station built by British administrators as an escape from coastal heat. It keeps a well-preserved colonial townscape, with a golf course, strawberry farms and a post office, and shows a Sri Lanka quite different from Galle Fort or Colombo.

Choosing a setting

Choosing a wedding setting in Tea Country & Nuwara Eliya

Tea estate bungalow exclusive hire

The season

When to get married

The hills are cooler than the coast all year and wetter. January to April is the most reliably dry period, and July and August are also relatively dry at altitude. The monsoon hits hard in May and June. Morning and evening mist adds atmosphere and gives strong photography conditions.

Recommended wedding months: January to April. Peak season is February to March, and the shoulder months are July to August.

Getting there

How guests arrive

The tea country is inland and high, with no domestic airport. All access is by road from Colombo, Kandy or Galle, and transfers are scenic but long.

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), Colombo. The only practical international entry point. The road to Hatton runs via Kandy, and the road to Nuwara Eliya is longer. With a full wedding party, an overnight in Colombo or Kandy first makes sense.

Kandy as transfer hub. Many groups spend a night in Kandy to shorten the second day's journey. The train from Kandy to Nanu Oya, for Nuwara Eliya, is the most scenic option.

A boutique property with tea estate views and an infinity pool, and smaller boutiques on the ridge.

Food and drink

Eating and drinking in Tea Country & Nuwara Eliya

The tea experience is the defining food event of the region, joined by the colonial bungalow kitchen and hill country cooking.

The tea experience

A guided factory tour, a plucking demonstration, and a formal tasting of the estate's high-grown single-estate teas by the bungalow fire or on the veranda. It is a fitting wedding welcome in the hill country.

Afternoon tea in the bungalow tradition

At altitude, in a colonial bungalow with a fire, afternoon tea with scones, jam and cream is natural and not pastiche. The buildings have been used this way for 150 years.

Nuwara Eliya strawberries

The hill station's market gardens have grown strawberries since colonial times, helped by the cool climate and well-drained volcanic soil. A strawberry and cream dessert is a genuinely local product.

Good to know

Before you book

Temperature at altitude

Days are cool and evenings cooler, a real change from the warm coast. A merino layer or light fleece suits evenings at the bungalows.

Road conditions

Hill roads are winding, narrow in places and can be hit by landslides after heavy rain, especially in the May and June monsoon. Transfer times need padding for larger groups, and wet estate tracks need a 4x4.

Mobile coverage

Coverage is patchy in the valleys around Hatton, and Wi-Fi is available at the bungalows. For a wedding the disconnection is part of the appeal, and guests should be told beforehand.

The no-children policy at the estate bungalows. The bungalow operator keeps a strict policy of no children under 12 that cannot be waived. Weddings with young children need separate accommodation for them or a different property.

Questions couples ask

Before you decide

What is the ceremony like at the estate bungalows?

The ceremony takes place in the tea fields around the event bungalow or on its lawn, overlooking the Castlereagh Reservoir and the valley. The air is cool and clear, with no roads, buildings or noise nearby, and the resident chef prepares a candlelit dinner.

Can all five bungalows be hired together?

Yes. They are linked by estate tracks, and a ceremony at one bungalow with guests across all five is the usual exclusive-hire format. Minimum hire periods apply, so the operator should be asked well ahead.

How cold does it get in Nuwara Eliya?

Nights can turn cold, especially in January and February, and a light jacket is needed in the evenings all year. The hill station was built because it was cool enough for British colonials to feel comfortable.

Should the guest itinerary include the train from Kandy?

Yes. The Kandy to Nanu Oya train passes mist-filled valleys, waterfalls and estates, with an observation car. Guests with mobility needs may prefer the road transfer, which is more practical.

When is the best time of year for a wedding in Sri Lanka's tea country?

The hills are cooler than the coast all year and wetter. January to April is the most reliably dry period, and July and August are also relatively dry at altitude. The monsoon hits hard in May and June.
