The Atlantic gives the Algarve its light. In the west, limestone cliffs, sea stacks and small coves frame quinta estates and boutique hotels where ceremonies look out over the ocean, and whitewashed farmhouses with terracotta roofs stand among orange and lemon groves in the hills behind.

Westward from Lagos, a walled town with Moorish ramparts, the coast grows wilder.
