About Strmol Castle

Strmol Castle is a 13th-century castle estate at the foot of Dvorjanski hrib, near Cerklje na Gorenjskem in Slovenia.

Strmol Castle stands on a sun-exposed slope beneath Dvorjanski hrib, east of the village of Dvorje in the Gorenjska region. Its roots go back to the 13th century, when it belonged to the Strmol knights, whose name it still carries. It became a cultural monument of national importance in 2004 and was fully renovated between 2010 and 2012. Landscaped grounds and a lake lie below the castle, with the Kamnik-Savinja Alps behind.

Weddings are held outdoors on the castle terraces, in the Golden Salon at the top of the central tower, or under a traditional covered hayrack in the grounds. The salons keep the furniture of the castle's pre-war owner, and the same period pieces furnish the guest rooms, which run as a boutique four-star hotel. Dining is arranged in the main castle dining room, the Knights' Hall or on the terraces, and the estate's own team provides the catering. Couples can book the castle for their day, then walk down to the cafe in the former farm buildings below the castle. Strmol Castle holds the Green Key sustainability certification and was named Unique Castle of the Year in 2018.

A castle of the Strmol knights

The castle stands on a sun-exposed slope beneath the 675-metre Dvorjanski hrib. Its roots go back to the 13th century, when it was the seat of the Strmol knights, and it has kept its Slovenian name through changes of owner. It was declared a cultural monument of national importance in 2004 and renovated in full between 2010 and 2012.

Interiors left as the last owner knew them

Salons and rooms keep the original furniture of the castle's wealthy pre-war owner, and the castle was named Unique Castle of the Year in 2018 by a London-based travel and hospitality magazine. The Golden Salon, with its gilt mirror and chandelier, is the main room for civil ceremonies.

Frequently asked questions

Strmol Castle

Where can the ceremony take place?

The ceremony and reception can be held outdoors on the castle terraces, under the toplar (a traditional covered hayrack) or in the Golden Salon. Each of these three locations has a ceremony capacity of 50.

Who arranges the civil registration?

The date of a civil ceremony is agreed in advance with the Kranj administrative unit, which issues the formal record. Marrying outside its official premises carries a fee of €170, and a deposit of €400 confirms the ceremony booking and is deducted from the final bill.

Can guests stay at the castle?

Yes. The castle has rooms furnished with restored original pre-war furniture, offered as a Castle Suite, a Castle Deluxe Room and a Castle Classic Room, with breakfast included. Manor house accommodation is also available on the estate.

Who provides the catering?

All catering is provided by the estate's own team from Brdo pri Kranju, and drinks are charged by consumption.

Can the castle be used for wedding photography?

Yes. Photographs can be taken in the park or in selected rooms of the castle for up to two hours. Couples hire their own photographer, and couples marrying at Strmol have priority on Saturdays.

Is the castle open to visitors?

Guided tours of the central castle tower last about one hour and must be booked in advance.
