Castle hotel in a 200-acre deer park · Masham, North Yorkshire
A Grade II* castle hotel at Masham in North Yorkshire, with castle, Deer House and woodland tipi weddings on the same estate.
Swinton Park is a Grade II* castle hotel at Masham, near Ripon, on the Swinton Estate at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. The Cunliffe-Lister family own it, and it was the ancestral home of the Earl of Swinton. Parkland and gardens surround the castle, with lakes, plenty of walking routes throughout the grounds and a Deer Park where a fallow deer herd lives. Inside, the Morning Room, Drawing Room, Sitting Room and Billiard Room, with its hidden cinema and den, give the feeling of a private country home rather than a traditional hotel. A wedding can use one or more reception rooms, with accommodation taken as needed.
Couples can choose a castle wedding, a rustic occasion at the Deer House overlooking the parkland, or a festival-inspired celebration in the Tipi at Swinton Bivouac. The Deer House is a barn-style venue in the Deer Park, with a light-filled interior and outdoor space, and views of the castle and the park. Swinton Bivouac sits on a hilltop with views of the Yorkshire Dales, and its weddings run in the summer months. Druid's Temple, a folly, is hidden in its woodland, and the team arrange each ceremony to be sensitive to the environment.

Swinton Park has a licence for ceremonies and can also host ceremonies to renew vows. At the castle, the Ballroom suits larger ceremonies, the Panelled Room smaller ones, and the Sitting Room small elopements with parkland views and an open fire. At the Deer House, vows can be exchanged inside the barn, among wooden benches, sheepskin throws and lights, or outdoors beneath open skies. A ceremony at the castle can be followed by a move to the Deer House for the wedding breakfast and evening. At Swinton Bivouac, the woodland ceremony has hay bale seating, and guests can play woodland games and explore afterwards while photographs are taken among the trees.

At the castle, the Ballroom and Panelled Room, Samuel's Restaurant, Adam's Folly and the Terrace Restaurant & Bar are named for different stages of the day. Drinks receptions can take place in the Drawing Room or outdoors on the lawns and terraces. The Deer House suits a daytime wedding breakfast or an evening celebration, with lawn games for young guests, live music or a disco, a bar, and candlelit evenings beside braziers. It takes up to 120 guests for a more casual event where allotted seating is not required. At Swinton Bivouac the Tipi stands either beside the Café Bistro or in the Yurt field, reached along a lighted footpath. The split-level Bivouac Café is fully licensed, with a fire indoors and a patio and fire pit outside.

Bedrooms and suites are in the castle or the adjoining Coach House, each designed with classic furnishings and contemporary comforts, across 31 rooms. The Signature Suites, Wensleydale, The Turret, Colsterdale and York, suit wedding mornings and first nights, with ample space for getting ready. Swinton Cottages stand just outside the castle walls, and many are dog-friendly. At Swinton Bivouac, guests can stay in Meadow Yurts, Cabin Yurts and Tree Lodges, and The Loft is a retreat for the newlyweds.

Dining on the estate uses seasonal produce from the four-acre Walled Garden, with venison from the estate deer herd, beef and pork from farm tenants, and ingredients the chefs forage. Samuel's Restaurant, the Terrace Restaurant & Bar, Chef's Table and Afternoon Tea in the Drawing Room offer different styles of meal. Deer House weddings can have a barbecue, woodfired pizzas or a sharing feast, and Swinton Bivouac weddings range from barbecues to dishes made from local produce.
