Marrying in the Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands are seven volcanic islands off the north coast of Sicily: Lipari, Vulcano, Stromboli, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea. The archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and each island has its own character. Together they make one of the most remote wedding destinations in Italy.

Panarea is the fashionable island, with no cars, access only by hydrofoil and a small permanent population that gives way in summer to an international crowd. Stromboli rises from the sea as a steep volcanic cone and erupts regularly. Salina is the greenest island, known for capers and Malvasia wine. Lipari, the largest, is the transport hub of the group.

A wedding here is a commitment to logistics and to weather contingency. Hydrofoils and ferries are the link with the mainland, and schedules shift with the wind. In return, the setting is unlike anywhere else in Italy.

The seasons

Best months
June, July and September
Best avoided
October to May, when ferry services are cut back sharply and accommodation closes.

The season is short. July has the longest days and the warmest sea. In September the summer crowd thins and the light is especially good.

Daylight and sunset

The bar runs from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month. A ceremony is usually timed an hour or two before the sunset shown.

What venues are like

Whitewashed Villa

Private villas on Salina, Panarea and Lipari look across to the other islands and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Thick cubic walls and outside staircases set the Aeolian style apart from mainland and Sicilian building.

Volcanic Viewpoint

The black lava beaches and hillside paths of Stromboli and the fumarole terrain of Vulcano serve for photography and outdoor celebrations, with an active volcano behind. Private access has to be agreed with the national park authority.

Private Island

Filicudi and Alicudi, the smallest islands, can be given over almost entirely to one wedding party. The boat is the only way in, and the other islands show on the horizon.

Clifftop Terrace

Terraces on the Lipari cliffs and the volcanic terraces of Panarea give views over several islands. They are used for the ceremony and aperitivo, with the reception held further inland. This is the usual Aeolian setting.

Boat Charter

Traditional wooden fishing boats and motorboats carry guests between islands, run sunset cruises and host small ceremonies at sea. Arriving by boat, with Stromboli's smoke on the horizon, is part of the day.

The lawReference

Marrying legally in Italy

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.

  1. 1
    Up to six months before

    The Atto Notorio

A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.

  2. 2
    Before you travel

    The Nulla Osta

The certificate of no impediment from your own country's authorities. British nationals apply by post to the British Embassy in Rome with a notice and an affirmation witnessed by a notary. American and Australian citizens obtain theirs from their embassy in Rome.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.

Travelling from the Gulf

Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.

Other nationalities

EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.

At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

Checked 5 October 2026. Rules change: confirm with the authority that will marry you before you book.

Where guests stay5 Star view

Accommodation

The range runs from the exclusive end on Panarea to the raw volcanic setting of Stromboli, and Lipari is the practical base for larger parties.

Food and wine5 Star view

At the table

Aeolian cooking follows the sea. Capers from Salina and the sweet Malvasia wine of the volcanic soils give the table its local identity.

Insalata di Capperi

A plain salad of Salina capers, tomatoes, black olives and tuna in local olive oil. The Salina caper has IGP status and is more aromatic than capers preserved in vinegar elsewhere.

Pasta alla Norma

Rigatoni with fried aubergine, tomato and salted ricotta, named for a Bellini opera and claimed by Sicily. It is served across the islands and shows the link with mainland Sicilian cooking.

Pesce Spada alla Ghiotta

Swordfish braised with tomatoes, capers, olives, celery and pine nuts, a layered dish that carries many Aeolian flavours at once.

Malvasia delle Lipari

A DOC sweet amber wine from partly dried Malvasia grapes on terraced volcanic slopes. It is served chilled with almond pastries or at the close of the wedding banquet.

What planners tell couples

Hydrofoil access

Hydrofoils from Milazzo on the Sicilian mainland are the main link to the islands. They run often in summer but can be cancelled in strong winds, so travel plans need slack built in.

No cars on Panarea

Luggage moves on three-wheeled electric carts, and guests walk between hotel and ceremony. Light packing and shoes that suit stone paths and steps are advisable.

Nearest airport

Catania Fontanarossa is the main gateway to Sicily, with a road or rail connection on to Milazzo. Palermo also connects to Milazzo, by a longer transfer. For guests from outside Italy, a stop in Sicily belongs in the total journey.

Stromboli activity

Stromboli is an active volcano with regular minor eruptions, and the summit is closed when activity rises. Updates from the national geophysics institute are worth following in the weeks before the wedding, with a fallback venue ready.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in the Aeolian Islands

Are the eruptions of Stromboli a risk to wedding guests?

The summit crater erupts at low intensity almost continuously, and this is the normal pattern. It does not affect the village at sea level. Larger events are tracked by observatories, and the summit closes when activity rises. For most of the year the eruptions are a backdrop and not a hazard.

How do guests move between the islands?

By hydrofoil and ferry, with several sailings a day in season.

Does Panarea suit older or less mobile guests?

Not easily. The island has no cars, steep paths and little wheelchair access in most venues. Where the guest list includes people with limited mobility, Salina or Lipari are the more practical choice.

What if a storm stops guests reaching the island?

Weather planning is essential in the Aeolians. The planner needs a clear protocol for guests held on the mainland, including rooms in Milazzo or Messina.
