Weddings on the Aeolian Islands

North of Sicily, the Aeolian Islands rise from the Tyrrhenian Sea in a landscape of volcanic peaks, whitewashed villages and sheltered harbours. Wedding celebrations take place in intimate island hotels, panoramic terraces and gardens overlooking the water, with the surrounding coastline providing a dramatic setting for gatherings beneath the Mediterranean sky.

Lipari is the largest island, with a lively harbour and historic centre, while Salina is known for its green hills, vineyards and quieter villages. Panarea offers a more intimate island atmosphere, and Stromboli is distinguished by its active volcano rising above the sea. Across the archipelago, the changing colours of the volcanic landscape, traditional island architecture and extraordinary sea views give the Aeolian Islands a character unlike anywhere else in Italy.

Questions couples ask

Marrying on the Aeolian Islands

Short answers from what the venues have told us.

Are the eruptions of Stromboli a risk to wedding guests?

The summit crater erupts at low intensity almost continuously, and this is the normal pattern. It does not affect the village at sea level. Larger events are tracked by observatories, and the summit closes when activity rises. For most of the year the eruptions are a backdrop and not a hazard.

How do guests move between the islands?

By hydrofoil and ferry, with several sailings a day in season.

Does Panarea suit older or less mobile guests?

Not easily. The island has no cars, steep paths and little wheelchair access in most venues. Where the guest list includes people with limited mobility, Salina or Lipari are the more practical choice.

What if a storm stops guests reaching the island?

Weather planning is essential in the Aeolians. The planner needs a clear protocol for guests held on the mainland, including rooms in Milazzo or Messina.
