Marrying in Bellagio

Bellagio sits at the tip of the promontory where Lake Como divides into two branches, with views in three directions across the water to the mountains. Its position, its scale and its lakeside hotels make it one of the most sought-after addresses on the lake.

The Bellagio guide differs from the wider Lake Como guide because it covers one town with its own character. Venues are concentrated in a small area, and a pedestrian historic centre shapes how the wedding day moves.

The gardens of Villa Melzi and Villa Serbelloni are English-style gardens set directly on the lake against the mountains. Both work as ceremony spaces.

The seasons

5 Star view Our reading of the wedding year, from the months below.

Best months
May, June, September and October
Best avoided
July and August bring very heavy visitor traffic, and accommodation is hard to find at short notice.

May and September are the strongest months, with rhododendrons and azaleas in bloom, warm lake water and lighter footfall in the old lanes.

Daylight and sunset

The bar runs from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month. A ceremony is usually timed an hour or two before the sunset shown.

What venues are like

Lakeside Villa

Private residences on the shore around the Bellagio promontory, with ceremony positions above the water and views to both southern arms of the lake. Arrival by private wooden launch is the defining moment.

Grand Hotel Garden

Bellagio's historic hotels offer garden terraces and reception rooms for weddings. The Villa Serbelloni gardens above the promontory tip are formal gardens of high quality.

Historic Palazzo

Noble palaces and manor houses in or near the village, some hired through specialist agents, with frescoed interiors, courtyards and lake views from the piano nobile.

Private Terrace

Villa and apartment terraces in the village offer ceremony and aperitivo positions above the water. Even modest properties on the promontory have strong views, and the cost is lower than a full villa hire.

Boat Charter

Classic mahogany Como launches serve wedding-day transfers, sunset aperitivo cruises between venues and small ceremonies on the water.

The lawReference

Marrying legally in Italy

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.

  1. 1
    Up to six months before

    The Atto Notorio

A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.

  2. 2
    Before you travel

    The Nulla Osta

The certificate of no impediment from your own country's authorities. British nationals apply by post to the British Embassy in Rome with a notice and an affirmation witnessed by a notary. American and Australian citizens obtain theirs from their embassy in Rome.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.

Travelling from the Gulf

Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.

Other nationalities

EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.

At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

Where guests stay5 Star view

Accommodation

Bellagio stands on a narrow promontory between the two southern arms of Lake Como. A few grand hotels and private villas make up the supply, and they fill fast in peak season.

Food and wine5 Star view

At the table

Cooking on Lake Como centres on freshwater fish and risotto, and on the Lombard tradition of butter and herbs rather than olive oil.

Missoltino

Sun-dried agone fish preserved in salt and bay leaves, a local preparation served with polenta and often named as the taste of Como.

Risotto al Pesce Persico

Saffron risotto topped with fillets of perch from the lake, pan-fried in butter. It is found in restaurants along the waterfront.

Sciatt

A Valtellina buckwheat fritter filled with melted Bitto cheese, crisp outside and molten inside. It is common in mountain trattorie north of the lake.

Franciacorta

Lombardy's metodo classico sparkling wine, from the hills between Como and Brescia, and a natural choice for toasts on the terrace.

Need to know5 Star view

What planners tell couples

Water-taxi logistics

Many villa venues on the lake can be reached only by boat. Water-taxi cost and scheduling belong in the transfer plan. Late boats from the Bellagio ferry landing run later in summer than in the off-peak months.

Peak-season pressure

July and August are the busiest months, hotels book out months ahead and the village lanes can crowd in mid-afternoon. May, June and September are calmer, with similarly reliable weather.

Airports

Milan Malpensa is the main gateway. Linate is closer to the city and has fewer long-haul routes. A hire car or private transfer is the practical choice, because public ferry connections from the airports are slow.

Noise rules

Bellagio sets strict noise limits after 11pm, so outdoor receptions with live music must finish or move indoors by then. The terms should be confirmed with the venue early.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in Bellagio

How does Bellagio differ from the rest of Lake Como for weddings?

Bellagio has the position at the tip of the promontory, with views in three directions. Its gardens and grand hotels sit in a walkable area. It is a complete wedding destination, and also the busiest in peak season.

Can the wedding party arrive in Bellagio by boat?

Yes. Car ferries and passenger ferries make arrival by water natural, and private boat hire from Varenna or Como city gives the wedding party a memorable arrival.

How busy is Bellagio in peak season?

Very busy. July and August bring many day-trippers to the waterfront and main lanes. Venues set back from the promenade, or high above it, avoid the crowds, and the day visitors leave in the evening.

Can the villa gardens in Bellagio be hired privately?

The Villa Melzi gardens are privately owned and have been used for exclusive events. The Villa Serbelloni grounds are run through the grand hotel and are open to hotel guests and booked events. Both need advance planning and a substantial budget.
