Marrying in Jumeirah & Madinat

Madinat Jumeirah is a purpose-built resort modelled on a traditional Arabian souk on the Jumeirah beachfront. Three hotels are linked by waterways that guests travel by wooden abra boats. The architecture recalls historic Arabia while the infrastructure runs to a five-star international standard. The Burj Al Arab stands on a private island offshore and can be seen from every terrace.

The complex has many event spaces, from a grand ballroom to beach pavilions, waterway-side terraces and rooftop majlis rooms. Guests arrive and depart by abra across illuminated waterways with the Burj Al Arab lit behind, an arrival specific to this complex.

Beyond it, Jumeirah Beach Road is an established hotel corridor. A Moroccan-palace hotel with palm-lined gardens and a private beach, opened in 2002, offers an intimacy uncommon among its neighbours, and a wave-shaped beach hotel offers a different scale.

Peak season
December, January

The same season logic applies as across Dubai. The Jumeirah beachfront faces west, so sunsets are well placed for ceremonies. November to February suits beach ceremonies, and the waterways and terraces are at their best in December and January, when evening temperatures fall to between 18 and 24 degrees.

Daylight and sunset

The bar runs from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month. A ceremony is usually timed an hour or two before the sunset shown.

The areas of Jumeirah & Madinat

Madinat Jumeirah complex

The core of the destination. Three hotels share waterways, a beach and a central souk of restaurants and shops, and the west-facing beach suits sunset ceremony timing.

The Burj Al Arab

The tower stands on its own island offshore, linked to the mainland by a private bridge. Access is by reservation only, and private hire needs dedicated specialists. For most couples it is a backdrop and a site visit.

The Moroccan-palace hotel

A long palace facade in blond stone, with interior courtyards and a private beach. Low-rise buildings and mature palm gardens give it a stillness absent from the tower hotels.

The wave-shaped beach hotel

Beside the Madinat and sharing its beachfront, with the same beach access and view of the Burj Al Arab.

Kinds of venue5 Star view

What venues are like

Waterway abra reception

The defining element of a Madinat wedding. Guests move between ceremony and reception venues on wooden abra boats along illuminated waterways.

Beach pavilion and terrace

Each hotel has private beach frontage, and several run dedicated ceremony structures. Beach ceremonies work from mid-October to the end of March, and pavilions can be put up on the sand for shelter on cooler evenings.

Grand ballroom

The Madinat Arena is a large licensed ballroom, staffed by the hotel and equipped for production. It is sometimes used for public events, so exclusivity should be confirmed at booking.

Moroccan courtyard and garden

The courtyard, palm garden and Moorish-arched reception spaces of the Moroccan-palace hotel form a tested sequence: ceremony under the entrance arches at dusk, cocktails in the palm garden, dinner in the Moorish ballroom.

Getting there

Airports and transfers

  • Dubai International (DXB) Direct flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow. For guest groups, taxi or private transfers are more practical than the Metro.
  • Al Maktoum International (DWC) A secondary airport further away, used by budget and charter operators and not the main arrival point for most UK groups.
  • Zayed International (Abu Dhabi) (AUH)
  • Ras Al Khaimah International (RKT)

Jumeirah lies a taxi ride from Dubai International Airport. The Madinat and the neighbouring beach hotel share the same beachfront.

The lawReference

Marrying legally in the United Arab Emirates

A visiting couple marries in a civil ceremony at the Civil Family Court of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department. Neither partner needs to live in the Emirates, the application can be made online, and the ceremony itself takes about fifteen minutes. Dubai's civil marriage service is built for residents of Dubai, so the celebration is usually held in Dubai or elsewhere after the legal ceremony in Abu Dhabi.

  1. 1
    Before you travel

    The documents

The passport of each partner, and evidence of divorce or the former spouse's death certificate where either applies. A British national may be asked for an affidavit or affirmation of marital status, which the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the British Consulate in Dubai issues by appointment.

  2. 2
Up to ten working days before

    The application

Made on the Judicial Department's website, through an approved typing centre or through an approved law firm. A standard application takes up to ten working days and an urgent one is available.

  3. 3
    The day

    The civil ceremony

Held at the Civil Family Court in the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department's main building beside Zayed Sports City. The court aims to complete the ceremony in about fifteen minutes, rings and personal vows are allowed, and the marriage certificate is issued afterwards with digital authentication.

Already married at home?5 Star view

Many couples complete the legal marriage at home or at the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court and hold the celebration in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah or elsewhere in the Emirates. A celebration with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner confirm what the setting allows.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens are issued a visa on arrival and need not apply in advance. The United Arab Emirates raised the stay for American passport holders to 90 days in any 180-day period from September 2024; the passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders are given a visitor visa free of charge on arrival and need not apply in advance. It allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and the passport must be valid for at least six months after the day you arrive.

Travelling from the Gulf

Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need no visa and no sponsor to enter the United Arab Emirates; a passport or a national identity card is accepted at the border. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.

Other nationalities

Many nationalities are issued a visa on arrival and others need an entry permit arranged before travel. Check the Immigration and Citizenship Authority's list or the Emirates' embassy in your country.

The visitor visa covers a wedding trip. A visiting couple does not need a residence permit to marry in Abu Dhabi.

Need to know5 Star view

What planners tell couples

Alcohol at licensed venues

Every venue is fully licensed, and an open bar at wedding events is standard. In the souk restaurants alcohol is served inside licensed areas.

Dress code

Resort and formal wear suit the hotel venues and beaches. Modest dress is required in public areas outside the hotel grounds.

Photography and the Burj Al Arab

The tower hotel is privately owned. Photography from the Madinat beach is unrestricted, but access to the island needs a restaurant reservation or a room booking.

Legal ceremony

Non-Muslim foreign nationals can marry legally at a licensed civil ceremony venue in the UAE. Most couples complete the legal marriage at home.

Ramadan

The hotels continue full service in enclosed licensed areas. Ceremony timing should respect the Maghrib prayer at sunset.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in Jumeirah & Madinat

What sets Madinat Jumeirah apart from other Dubai venues?

The waterways and abra transfers are particular to this complex. With the souk architecture, the beach and the Burj Al Arab behind, ceremony, cocktails and reception can sit in distinct settings linked by water.

Can part of the wedding use the Burj Al Arab?

Private access is booked directly with the hotel, and dinner for small groups can be reserved ahead. Full venue hire is rare and needs specialist coordination. For most couples the tower is the backdrop.

Is the Moroccan-palace hotel better for a smaller wedding?

It can be. Its architecture, garden setting and service suit an intimate scale better than the Madinat's larger ballrooms, though it lacks the waterways.

How does sunset timing work for beach ceremonies?

Jumeirah Beach faces west, so the Burj Al Arab is silhouetted against the sunset. In December and January sunset falls at about 5.45 to 6pm, so a ceremony starting at 4.30 to 5pm gets golden light behind the tower.

How does a foreign couple marry legally in the United Arab Emirates?

A visiting couple marries in a civil ceremony at the Civil Family Court of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department. Neither partner needs to live in the Emirates, the application can be made online, and the ceremony itself takes about fifteen minutes. Do American guests need a visa for the United Arab Emirates?
