Getting Married in Napa Valley

Vineyard estates and golden hills northeast of San Francisco. Napa Valley lies northeast of San Francisco, a corridor of vine rows and estate properties that has shaped the American wedding landscape for two decades. Hotels, restaurant kitchens and private winery buyouts combine to give a wedding that is intimate and also grand.

A Wedding in Napa Valley

Vineyard estates and golden hills northeast of San Francisco

The valley divides into distinct villages. Yountville is restaurant-led and walkable. St. Helena holds the greatest concentration of estate wineries and boutique hotels. Calistoga has thermal springs and a more laid-back pace. Carneros is the sparkling wine region, with fog from the bay and cooler temperatures.

Harvest in September and October is the peak. The vine rows turn gold and copper, the light turns amber by 4pm and the air carries crushed grape. Ceremony photographs in this light are difficult to replicate.

Catering culture is strong, and many properties have direct relationships with chefs from the best-known kitchens. A rehearsal dinner followed by a vineyard ceremony and an estate reception is the itinerary that defines Napa.

Settings, travel and stays

Choosing a Setting

Hillside Resort Ceremony. Hillside properties with valley panoramas, terraced lawns and a sunset orientation.

Getting There

SFO lies to the south and OAK is a little closer, and private car transfers are standard. The valley is a long corridor, and most venues sit a short drive from each other along Highway 29 or the Silverado Trail.

San Francisco International (SFO). Direct UK flights from London Heathrow.

Oakland International (OAK). An alternative with rideshare access.

Where Guests Stay

The valley offers a solid range of boutique hotels and resorts. Most couples pick one hotel as the group base and hire a separate venue for the ceremony and reception.

Hillside olive grove hotel. A terrace restaurant on a hillside olive grove, and a much-photographed Napa wedding property.

Canyon lodges. Cedar lodges in a private canyon with a lake, completely secluded.

Calistoga spa hotel. A spa, geothermal pools and a relaxed tone.

St. Helena garden inn. Vine-row gardens at the heart of the valley.

Good to know

Food and Drink

Wedding catering in Napa can be arranged to a high standard compared with other US destinations.

Flagship restaurant dinners. A flagship Yountville restaurant takes rehearsal dinners for small groups by arrangement.

Ranch farmstead dining. Estate-grown wine and produce in a ranch setting, with private dining for groups.

Property estate dinners. Most flagship hotels offer estate tasting menu dinners for wedding parties, sourced from valley farms and the hotel's own gardens.

Good to Know

Wildfire awareness. Wildfires in Northern California can reduce air quality and visibility in late summer and early autumn. The 2020 Glass Fire affected some Napa properties, including one that has since been rebuilt. A venue's current status and the air quality forecasts should be checked in the weeks before an event.

Minimum stays. Many estate hotels require a multi-night minimum stay during harvest season. September and October fill far ahead.

Harvest timing. Harvest dates vary with the weather each year. Picking typically runs from mid-August through October depending on the varietal. The venue advises whether active harvest operations will coincide with the event.

Permit requirements. Some outdoor ceremonies on winery land need county permits, particularly for amplified music. The venue coordinator handles this, but the noise ordinance cutoff should be confirmed, typically 10pm in most of Napa County.

Marrying legally and entry rules

The legal requirements for marrying here, and who needs a visa, are being checked and are not published yet. Confirm both with the official authority that will marry you before you book.

Questions Couples Ask
Which month suits a Napa wedding best?

September is generally agreed to be the peak for weather and atmosphere. The harvest light is exceptional, temperatures are warm but not extreme and the valley is at full energy. October is almost as good and a little calmer. May and June bring green vines, spring flowers and smaller crowds.

Can a winery be hired exclusively?

Yes. Many smaller estate wineries offer a full buyout for weddings. This typically includes the winery building, barrel cave and gardens, and sometimes on-site accommodation.

Is Napa accessible for international guests?

Yes. SFO is a major international hub with direct flights from London, and most other European and Asian cities connect easily. Guests reach the valley from the airport by private car.
