Marrying in Saadiyat Island
Saadiyat Island is Abu Dhabi's cultural and residential island, linked to the mainland by two bridges. It was planned as the site of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum. The Louvre opened in 2017 and is among the most visited cultural institutions in the Gulf. The island's beach is a long stretch of white sand on the Arabian Gulf, regularly described as one of the cleanest in the UAE.
The wedding offer rests on three beachfront hotels, each with its own section of sand. Saadiyat has no skyline to offer. It offers natural beach beauty, cultural weight and a standard of guest experience that does not rely on spectacle.
A private island just offshore, reached by speedboat, adds a further option. The water between is shallow, clear and calm, and the boat transfer is an experience in itself.

The beach faces south, and sea breezes help even in the shoulder months. November to February is ideal for beach ceremonies. October and March suit outdoor events in the morning and early evening. The Louvre is best visited in the cooler part of the day.

The bar runs from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month. A ceremony is usually timed an hour or two before the sunset shown.

The areas of Saadiyat Island
Saadiyat Beach
The long beach along the southern shore, with three five-star hotels holding sections of it. The beach is open to the public outside the hotel zones, and the hotel sections have private access for guests.
Cultural district (Louvre Abu Dhabi)
The museum sits at the western end of the island under a perforated dome that scatters dappled light across the galleries. A private evening viewing can be arranged through its events office.
Private island offshore
Reached by speedboat from the marina, with beach villas, a restaurant and a small event venue. It is entirely private during a buy-out, and the boat transfers create the arrival.
Eastern Saadiyat
The eastern end is being developed as a residential and hotel district. For now the three beach hotels and the private island are the main options.
What venues are like
Beach ceremony
All three beach hotels have private frontage and ceremony setup services. The beach is more natural and less commercial than the Palm strip, with shallow turquoise water and no high-rise in the sight-lines. The sun sets offshore, so late-afternoon ceremonies are well lit.
Beachfront resort reception
Two of the hotels have event spaces opening onto the beach, so a reception can move between indoors and outdoors. One has a villa complex, the most intimate large-property setting, and the other a conventional ballroom beside beach terraces.
Private island event
The island's villas can house the whole guest list on site, with the ceremony on the beach and all catering handled by the island team. The boat arrival is ceremonial in itself.
Cultural quarter evening event
A pre-wedding or post-wedding event in the museum, arranged through its events office, can include private evening access to the galleries with catering under the dome.
Airports and transfers
- Dubai International (DXB) A workable alternative for guests flying from UK regional airports that have no Abu Dhabi service. The road transfer is long.
- Al Maktoum International (DWC)
- Zayed International (Abu Dhabi) (AUH) The main gateway, with direct flights from London and Manchester on the Abu Dhabi carrier. It is the most convenient airport for the island's hotels.
- Ras Al Khaimah International (RKT)
Saadiyat is a short drive from Abu Dhabi International Airport. From Dubai airport the journey is much longer.
Marrying legally in the United Arab Emirates
A visiting couple marries in a civil ceremony at the Civil Family Court of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department. Neither partner needs to live in the Emirates, the application can be made online, and the ceremony itself takes about fifteen minutes. Dubai's civil marriage service is built for residents of Dubai, so the celebration is usually held in Dubai or elsewhere after the legal ceremony in Abu Dhabi.

Already married at home?5 Star view
Many couples complete the legal marriage at home or at the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court and hold the celebration in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah or elsewhere in the Emirates. A celebration with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner confirm what the setting allows.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States
American citizens are issued a visa on arrival and need not apply in advance. The United Arab Emirates raised the stay for American passport holders to 90 days in any 180-day period from September 2024; the passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival.
Travelling from the United Kingdom
British passport holders are given a visitor visa free of charge on arrival and need not apply in advance. It allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and the passport must be valid for at least six months after the day you arrive.
Travelling from the Gulf
Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need no visa and no sponsor to enter the United Arab Emirates; a passport or a national identity card is accepted at the border. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.
Other nationalities
Many nationalities are issued a visa on arrival and others need an entry permit arranged before travel. Check the Immigration and Citizenship Authority's list or the Emirates' embassy in your country.
The visitor visa covers a wedding trip. A visiting couple does not need a residence permit to marry in Abu Dhabi.

Accommodation
The three main beach hotels hold all accommodation for most group sizes. The private island is the choice for very small, exclusive events.
At the table
The hotel restaurants on Saadiyat offer a strong choice, and the museum next door adds a cultural context.
Mediterranean and Levantine beachfront dining
The western hotel's main restaurant serves a Mediterranean and Levantine menu on the beachfront, with private group dining.
Museum cafe and events catering
The museum has a cafe and can provide catering for private hires. The food is institutional rather than restaurant-grade, and the point of the event is the setting under the dome.
Halal and dietary
Hotels serve halal food as standard, and pork only in licensed restaurants. Vegetarian, vegan and allergen-specific needs are handled well.
What planners tell couples
Beach conservation
The beach runs a marine turtle nesting programme. In the nesting season, from May to October, some sections are restricted at night. Winter weddings are not affected.
Alcohol
All three hotels are licensed. Abu Dhabi enforces its public alcohol rules more strictly outside hotel grounds, while full bar service at weddings is standard inside a venue.
Dress for Louvre visits
The museum sets no formal dress code, but modest dress is appropriate inside. Photography is allowed in the public galleries.
Legal ceremony
Non-Muslim foreign nationals can marry legally at licensed UAE civil ceremony venues. Most couples complete the legal marriage at home.
Ramadan
Hotels keep full service in enclosed areas during Ramadan, and the museum stays open with adjusted hours. Ceremony timing should respect the sunset prayer.
